The 2010 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva follows in the footsteps of the 2009, which, incidentally, won the coveted Gambera Rosso ‘Tre Biccheri’ award ( the ‘Oscars’ of Italian wines)! And it did for under $10 a bottle, incredible! Think ‘The Big Fat Greek Wedding’; low budget flick with an incredible return on the investment! Now we have that same talent at work in this latest rendition. Pure Negroamaro (red grape varietal indigenous to the Puglia region, or, ‘heel of the boot’), 100% worth of deep, dark and savory flavors without compromising on those earthy, rustic and meaty characteristics we know to be Salice Salentino (the town within Puglia for which the grape is best known). Originating from vines planted in 1962 and aged for a minimum of 24 months in French barriques. Ideal choice with Pizza, Pasta (red sauce, of course), steak and hamburgers among others. The ‘Go To’ wine if you will. If you don’t, you’ve insulted your palate (and probably your pocket as well)!

who continue to showcase traditional Italian wines while pursuing exciting new ideas as well. Fichimori is a delicious, fruity blend of the indigenous grape, Negroamaro, with Syrah. It shares some of the characteristics of Pinot Noir or Beaujolais wines in both body and flavor profile. This wine is a bright-colored medium ruby; on the nose it displays vibrant red fruits including cherry and pomegranate, which mingle nicely with sweet herbs. It is medium bodied with moderate acidity and light tannins resulting in an easy drinking style. This soft and fruity wine is best served chilled and will drink beautifully with a variety of food including holiday fare such as turkey with cranberry and all the trimmings. for our wine of the month but not enough of it was available.

The nose is chock full of fruit with big renditions of boysenberry, raspberry and blueberry garnished with cinnamon and pepper spice, licorice (both black and red) with a touch of vanilla bean.

In the mouth the fruit continues-- juicy red and black fruits of more raspberry and boysenberry with added blackberries and kola nut. Sweet, rich earthiness lingers in the back palate as warm brown spices stay in the fore-- cinnamon particularly. While lush in the mouthfeel and loaded with fruit, a good amount of forward acidity keeps it from becoming cloying. Smooth, silky, velvety tannins course throughout the tasting experience.
