an uncanny combination of vibrancy, fat and density. Finishes suave and long, with fine, sweet tannins and very good lift.

The 2010 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva follows in the footsteps of the 2009, which, incidentally, won the coveted Gambera Rosso ‘Tre Biccheri’ award ( the ‘Oscars’ of Italian wines)! And it did for under $10 a bottle, incredible! Think ‘The Big Fat Greek Wedding’; low budget flick with an incredible return on the investment! Now we have that same talent at work in this latest rendition. Pure Negroamaro (red grape varietal indigenous to the Puglia region, or, ‘heel of the boot’), 100% worth of deep, dark and savory flavors without compromising on those earthy, rustic and meaty characteristics we know to be Salice Salentino (the town within Puglia for which the grape is best known). Originating from vines planted in 1962 and aged for a minimum of 24 months in French barriques. Ideal choice with Pizza, Pasta (red sauce, of course), steak and hamburgers among others. The ‘Go To’ wine if you will. If you don’t, you’ve insulted your palate (and probably your pocket as well)!

It comes across like a rustic Zinfandel, but with loads of character and personality, displaying an almost savage intensity to its flavors. This is a wild, adventuresome wine that should drink nicely for several years. Bring on the pizza!Proprietor and winemaker Jayson Woodbridge is best known for his cult Hundred Acre wines. The Layer Cake wines represent unique varietals from countries he and his team feel cannot be recreated or replicated. Every Layer Cake wine is a rich, lush expression that truly reflects the place, the land and their own style of winemaking.NOTE: DNA analysis shows that Primitivo is the same varietal as Zinfandel. Salento is thought to be the original source of Primitivo in Italy where it was introduced from Croatia. This 100% pure Primitvo comes from Salento, the “Heel of the Boot” of Italy; specifically the area of Manduria. Sourced from truly remarkable vineyards dating to Roman times, some of the head-trained “Old Vines” exceed 100 years in age. The soils in Manduria are red iron-rich clays with large calcareous rocks and ancient coral (ancient sea bed); conditions that stress the vines resulting in wonderfully intense flavors.Opaque and purple-colored with a nose of jammy black cherry and blackberry fruit, truffles, tar, and spice. Warm and rich in the mouth with a creamy texture; the ripe fruit is well supported by the deep structure of the wine. Sit back and travel through time…

comes to life. Gaetano Marangelli, along with his brother, Vito Angelo, natives of Puglia, have seen this dream come to fruition in an unusually short time. In 2000, he began making wines through artisan processes that respect the time-honored traditions of local winemaking, while experimenting with unfamiliar varietals and exploring new ways to emphasize the uniqueness of Puglia's grapes, fertile soil and vineyards. The result is harmonious, balanced yet uniquely powerful wine. This Nº Zero Negroamaro is a perfect example-- we were smitten upon nosing and tasting it and knew our readers would probably react the same way.

The nose is filled with sweet dark plums and blackberries, both baking and peppery spices, leather, English tobacco and a hint of background lavender. The palate is very approachable with upfront ripe fruit flavors, sweet cherry and black cherry, a nice layer of warm brown spices, good grip from balanced acidity, a touch of herbs and pencil lead in the finish. This is great wine for September-- from warmer days to cooling nights this is ready for last-minute barbecues, tailgate parties or end-of-the-day fêtes. Just delicious.

is expressive, rich, and robust on the palate, with an elegance that comes only from small productions and expert craftsmanship.

The nose is lucious and fruit-filled with notions of dark red fruits, black raspberry, boysenberry, pomengrante and red plum; spice and dark florals complement the fruit nosings. Upon tasting both the lush palate weight and excellent acidity manifest quickly-- flavors of strawberry tea, earthy, fresh-tilled soil, and dark spices persist nicely, riding a mixed fruit mélange wave toward a lengthy, tasty finish.

for our wine of the month but not enough of it was available.

The nose is chock full of fruit with big renditions of boysenberry, raspberry and blueberry garnished with cinnamon and pepper spice, licorice (both black and red) with a touch of vanilla bean.

In the mouth the fruit continues-- juicy red and black fruits of more raspberry and boysenberry with added blackberries and kola nut. Sweet, rich earthiness lingers in the back palate as warm brown spices stay in the fore-- cinnamon particularly. While lush in the mouthfeel and loaded with fruit, a good amount of forward acidity keeps it from becoming cloying. Smooth, silky, velvety tannins course throughout the tasting experience.
