Ardevol Anjoli is a wonderful introduction to the prestigious Priorat region of Spain. The Ardevol family has been growing vines in the village of Porrera since the 13th century. Anjoli Read More...
is the name of the adopted daughter of Rose Galceran, one of the partners of Celler Ardevol. This 2009 release received 90-point ratings from both Jay Miller for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator!

Ardevol Anjoli is light ruby red in color with a nose of fresh berries, licorice and tobacco. It is soft on the palate with medium-full-body and fine, well integrated tannins, offering rich flavors of plum and blackberries. Anjoli is a blend of 40% Garnacha, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah and 20% Merlot. The wine was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before aging for 16 months in French oak barrels. It is well balanced with a long, lingering finish.

s still plenty of energy, acidity and freshness, and powerful fruit flavors that pulse with vibrancy. The best vintage of Pleret to date, this wine benefits from Buil & Giné’s oldest plantings of garnacha and cariñena (over 40 years), blended with cabernet, merlot and syrah."

In the holy pantheon of Spanish red wines, the big, full-bodied wines of Priorat can contend only with Rioja and Ribera del Duero for excellence and prestige. A historical appellation dating back to the 12th Century, Priorat, or “priory,” takes its name from the Carthusian Monastery of Scala Dei founded in 1194 to commemorate the spot where, legend has it, a shepherd had a beatific vision of angels ascending a stairway to heaven. Buil & Gine, a family domaine founded in 1996, has quickly risen to preeminence in the appellation, and is widely considered one of the best young producers in Priorat.

GR-174 is the lovely path that crosses Priorat. Hiking all along this track is probably the best way to feel its beauty. If you could concentrate in a bottle the ripe fruits aromas and the minerality of its terroir the result would be a wine like this.

two estates, “Mas d’en Caçador” and “Mas d’en Ferran,” owned and looked after by several generations who were previously selling to other local wineries. Carme Figuerola and Raimon Castellví built the winery and got started in 1999, moved by their passion for wine and the exceptional quality of the soils where their vineyard grows – locally called “llicorella.”

TASTING NOTES: Celler de L’Encastell’s Marge is made up of 60% Garnacha with the balance Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 8 months in French and American oak. Dense purple in color, it delivers an enticing nose of licorice, liquid minerality, lavender, incense and black cherry. Round, intense, and layered on the palate.

The nose is a tangible blend of rich, earthy spice, dark red and black berries and plums and subtle briary/ bramble notes. The palate combines both sweet and high-toned fruits (from black raspberries to pomegranate, cranberry to black currant/cassis) with earthy tangents and herbal flecks: slatey minerality, black licorice, incense and black tea. Weaving within and throughout the palate is a wondrous layer of tannins, at once highlighting the brightness, balancing the sweet, blending the two. If this is already stunning in its youth (and it is), time and patience will lead only to Elysian Fields, where wines like this one are served. The last touches of sweet spice and vanilla bean, heartened by deep, dark berry flavors, slowly, joyfully echoed in the moderately long finish."

it into the vats. The wine is a blend of the different grapes in his Clos Mogador vineyard (it’s just one of a handful of wines officially awarded the single-vineyard label by the Catalan wine institutions): Garnacha, Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. But the wine speaks more of the place than the grapes, with notes of slate, thyme, rosemary, sage, lavender, black cherries and a supple palate, full-bodied, with pungent flavors, round, velvety tannins and a long aftertaste. This is a superb effort for such a warm vintage, the warmest and driest in Priorat since 2003, and great value for the quality. 30,000 bottles are produced of this prodigious, powerful but balanced Priorat. Drink 2015-2025.

Clos Mogador and the Barbier family should require no introduction to any Priorat aficionado, as they are the pioneers and catalysts of modern day Priorat. To understand low yields (and high prices) it should be enough to say that from their 40 hectares of vineyards they produce 45,000 bottles of wine per year. The wines are not cheap, but for the quality they offer they represent good value and are all highly recommended."

Clos Mogador is named after the single vineyard that René Barbier started to cultivate in the 1970's in the now-famous wine village of Gratallops. The wines of Clos Mogador have become as famous as other mythical wines of the world such as Italy's Sassicaia and Bordeaux's Château Margaux. It has reached the cult status (and prices) as "un Grande Vino" on the world's stage.

One of the most interesting aspects of winemaking at Clos Mogador is the fact that René presses the grape using an olive press, which has the effect of only extracting half of the amount of juice that a typical wine press would, making the wine 50% more concentrated. Considering that Priorat wines are already highly concentrated, and that "normal" yields are absolutely microscopic (especially compared to other Spanish wine regions such as La Rioja), the wines of Clos Mogador are nearly elixirs. Robert Parker, the influential wine critic, was one of the first international critics to praise the wines of this stunning winery.

The maiden vintage was 2000 and just 6,000 bottles are produced. Readers should note that the wine is now entitled simply “Nelin” rather than “Clos Nelin.”

Mas Doix has a story quite common in Priorat in which professional people living in the big cities return to reclaim the family heritage (and are having more fun than they ever did before). Mas Doix’s flagship cuvee is named DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles with an annual production of only 4-7,000 bottles. It is typically a blend of old-vine Garnacha and Carinena (80-108 years of age) with the proportions varying slightly from year to year. The wine is aged in 100% new French oak for 14-18 months.

Ester Nin has released her new wine: Planetes. A coupage of Garnacha (70%) and Cariñena originating from the estate of the same name, which has vineyards that are still fairly young (Read More...
12 years old at present). Moreover, Planetes de Nin is Porrera's first 'Vi de Vila' (literally, 'Town Wine'); in the style of the French Crus, the DOQ Priorat introduced new legislation (2009) that recognises and protects the region's different climatic areas, with the aim of highlighting their own individual characteristics, including vinicultural, soil and climate. In the case of Porrera, the area is particularly cool with no over-ripening; a Planetes only has to be opened for this to be confirmed and to enjoy its sincerity; this is a genuine terroir wine, a truthful expression of the Priorat's historic grape varieties: the Garnacha and the Cariñena.

Despite the youthfulness of the vines, the exceptional characteristics of the area and the terrain, and also the care that both Ester and Carles devote to their cultivation and to every wine-making process (certified organic agriculture and biodynamic farming methods), allow us to enjoy - yet again with this 'new arrival' - the finesse, elegance and great complexity which we have grown used to from this winery. More easily affordable, but on the same lines as the truly excellent Nit de Nin. If you can get hold of a few bottles, then don't think twice.

and longevity. It should see its 30th birthday in fine form. I also was able to taste the 2010 Finca Dofi and 2010 L’Ermita at this early stage. Palacios seems very pleased by his material and I see no reason to doubt him.

Alvaro Palacios established his namesake winery in 1989. The flagship L’Ermita made its debut in 1993. Finca Dofi and L’Ermita vineyards are farmed biodynamically. All of the wines are bottled without filtration. In 2008 Palacios was the last grower in Priorat to harvest, waiting out rains that diluted other growers’ fruit. It appears that 2009 was a slightly more successful vintage for Alvaro Palacios (and most Priorat producers) than was 2008. All of the 2009s were tasted from barrel samples at the Bodega in January 2011."

A wonderful purple shade, notable tears and boldly fragrant aromas of liquor, cocoa, coffee and charcoal embers. It comes as a surprise to encounter definite aromatic notes typical of white winemaking, a distinctive trait that endows Serras with fine balsamic acidity on the nose. This is a rounded, voluminous wine, juicy and intense, with just a whiff of carbonated liveliness; but if you want to enjoy it at its optimum, then wait a while and leave it to settle down. Displaying plenty of energy at present, it augurs extremely well for the future.
