ROBERT PARKER 93 POINTS - "From one of Priorat’s coolest micro-climates, this 2012 Black Slate is composed of 60% old vine Grenache (60+ years) and 40% Read More...
old Carignan (80 years), and aged 12 months in concrete tanks, old wood foudres, and two-year-old barrels. It reveals lots of licorice, crushed wet rock, sweet blueberry and black raspberry fruit characteristics along with a full-bodied, moderately tannic mouthfeel. The tannins are sweet and well-integrated, and the wine is drinking beautifully already. For a relatively expensive Spanish appellation, this is an outright steal! Consume it over the next 3-6 years."

One of the oldest grape-growing families in the Priorat, the Sangenis family had historically sold the entirety of their production to the local cooperative until 1995 when they formed a new domaine, Celler Cal Pla. Now, youthful Joan Sangenis manages the estate, farming the vineyards organically and making the wines in a small cellar in Porrera.

In a region where almost everyone has a few vines over 50 years old, the Sangenis family’s entire vineyard is this old, with several small parcels of 100+ year old vines of Grenache and Carignan. Also, they are one of the few holders of extremely old vine white Grenache, a varietal that many properties have ripped out. This old vine material means that yields are extremely low and concentration quite high. In addition to the Mas d’En Compte Blanc there is a companion Negre as well as a small quantity of the oldest vines from Mas d’En Caçador vineyard bottled under the Planots label. Joan also makes Black Slate from the village of Porrera.

Black Slate is a blend of 60% Grenache (from 60-year-old vines) and 40% Carignan (from 80-year-old vines) and comes from the Priorat, a mountainous region in southwest Catalonia, Spain, which can produce powerful, flavorful red wines. The area is characterized by its warm climate and unique terroir of black slate and quartz soil known as llicorella. This type of soil retains very little water so vines are smaller than usual and produce smaller yields, but the grapes have exceptional concentration and depth.

s still plenty of energy, acidity and freshness, and powerful fruit flavors that pulse with vibrancy. The best vintage of Pleret to date, this wine benefits from Buil & Giné’s oldest plantings of garnacha and cariñena (over 40 years), blended with cabernet, merlot and syrah."

In the holy pantheon of Spanish red wines, the big, full-bodied wines of Priorat can contend only with Rioja and Ribera del Duero for excellence and prestige. A historical appellation dating back to the 12th Century, Priorat, or “priory,” takes its name from the Carthusian Monastery of Scala Dei founded in 1194 to commemorate the spot where, legend has it, a shepherd had a beatific vision of angels ascending a stairway to heaven. Buil & Gine, a family domaine founded in 1996, has quickly risen to preeminence in the appellation, and is widely considered one of the best young producers in Priorat.

GR-174 is the lovely path that crosses Priorat. Hiking all along this track is probably the best way to feel its beauty. If you could concentrate in a bottle the ripe fruits aromas and the minerality of its terroir the result would be a wine like this.

to four-year-old French oak barrels): Opaque ruby. Powerful smoke- and mineral-accented black and blue fruit aromas show very good clarity and pick up suave floral and spicecake elements with air. Fleshy and broad in the mouth, offering ripe blackcurrant and mulberry flavors sharpened by a peppery flourish. The floral note comes back strong on the finish, which clings with excellent tenacity and youthfully chewy tannins. In a broader-shouldered style than its Clos Erasmus sibling; this one should age well but offers plenty of immediate appeal as well. In the context of high-end Priorats there's remarkable value here." Josh Raynolds,

it into the vats. The wine is a blend of the different grapes in his Clos Mogador vineyard (it’s just one of a handful of wines officially awarded the single-vineyard label by the Catalan wine institutions): Garnacha, Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. But the wine speaks more of the place than the grapes, with notes of slate, thyme, rosemary, sage, lavender, black cherries and a supple palate, full-bodied, with pungent flavors, round, velvety tannins and a long aftertaste. This is a superb effort for such a warm vintage, the warmest and driest in Priorat since 2003, and great value for the quality. 30,000 bottles are produced of this prodigious, powerful but balanced Priorat. Drink 2015-2025.

Clos Mogador and the Barbier family should require no introduction to any Priorat aficionado, as they are the pioneers and catalysts of modern day Priorat. To understand low yields (and high prices) it should be enough to say that from their 40 hectares of vineyards they produce 45,000 bottles of wine per year. The wines are not cheap, but for the quality they offer they represent good value and are all highly recommended."

Clos Mogador is named after the single vineyard that René Barbier started to cultivate in the 1970's in the now-famous wine village of Gratallops. The wines of Clos Mogador have become as famous as other mythical wines of the world such as Italy's Sassicaia and Bordeaux's Château Margaux. It has reached the cult status (and prices) as "un Grande Vino" on the world's stage.

One of the most interesting aspects of winemaking at Clos Mogador is the fact that René presses the grape using an olive press, which has the effect of only extracting half of the amount of juice that a typical wine press would, making the wine 50% more concentrated. Considering that Priorat wines are already highly concentrated, and that "normal" yields are absolutely microscopic (especially compared to other Spanish wine regions such as La Rioja), the wines of Clos Mogador are nearly elixirs. Robert Parker, the influential wine critic, was one of the first international critics to praise the wines of this stunning winery.

Ester Nin has released her new wine: Planetes. A coupage of Garnacha (70%) and Cariñena originating from the estate of the same name, which has vineyards that are still fairly young (Read More...
12 years old at present). Moreover, Planetes de Nin is Porrera's first 'Vi de Vila' (literally, 'Town Wine'); in the style of the French Crus, the DOQ Priorat introduced new legislation (2009) that recognises and protects the region's different climatic areas, with the aim of highlighting their own individual characteristics, including vinicultural, soil and climate. In the case of Porrera, the area is particularly cool with no over-ripening; a Planetes only has to be opened for this to be confirmed and to enjoy its sincerity; this is a genuine terroir wine, a truthful expression of the Priorat's historic grape varieties: the Garnacha and the Cariñena.

Despite the youthfulness of the vines, the exceptional characteristics of the area and the terrain, and also the care that both Ester and Carles devote to their cultivation and to every wine-making process (certified organic agriculture and biodynamic farming methods), allow us to enjoy - yet again with this 'new arrival' - the finesse, elegance and great complexity which we have grown used to from this winery. More easily affordable, but on the same lines as the truly excellent Nit de Nin. If you can get hold of a few bottles, then don't think twice.
