The most rustic of these three wines, with lots of pepper, roasted herbs, meat juices, charcoal, and scorched earth, this spicy wine has an inky ruby/purple color and lots of body. Read More...
It comes across like a rustic Zinfandel, but with loads of character and personality, displaying an almost savage intensity to its flavors. This is a wild, adventuresome wine that should drink nicely for several years. Bring on the pizza!Proprietor and winemaker Jayson Woodbridge is best known for his cult Hundred Acre wines. The Layer Cake wines represent unique varietals from countries he and his team feel cannot be recreated or replicated. Every Layer Cake wine is a rich, lush expression that truly reflects the place, the land and their own style of winemaking.NOTE: DNA analysis shows that Primitivo is the same varietal as Zinfandel. Salento is thought to be the original source of Primitivo in Italy where it was introduced from Croatia. This 100% pure Primitvo comes from Salento, the “Heel of the Boot” of Italy; specifically the area of Manduria. a salivating lift. This one overdelivers for the price; my favorite value Primitivo thus far. Dense ruby red with a purplish rim, it is immediately intense on the nose with marked aromas of ripe and fleshy red fruits, notably cherries followed by spicy notes of cinnamon and nutmeg; in the mouth it is full, powerful, smooth and very long, with a well defined acid streak which makes it fresh and pleasing.
