World War, so today even the best examples like this nectar from Bacalhoa remain woefully under priced. Bacalhoa first came to our attention in the fall of 2011 when their 2004 vintage won the International Trophy for the best sweet fortified wine under 10 pounds at Decanter Magazine’s annual World Wine Awards competition. This past fall this 2007 vintage took home a second trophy. Not surprisingly we started getting calls from people clamoring for the wine, but we didn’t have a source for it until now.

Setubal is a small peninsula located just south of Lisbon. The region is famed for its delicious caldeiradas (fish stews) as well for its scenic Arrabida Hills where the best Muscat de Alexandria vines are planted. In Setubal, much as with the Ports of the Douro, the fermentation of sweet Muscat grapes is arrested after a short time by the addition of a small dose of brandy. The wine is then kept in contact with the grape skins for six months to accentuate its floral aromatics and flavor intensity. This colheita was then aged in small oak barrels for nearly four years in a warm corrugated steel-roofed warehouse to caramelize the sugars and to further concentrate its flavors through evaporation. The result is a complex, hedonistic, and cerebral taste experience that would be a steal at twice our price!

Decanter Magazine’s judging panel gave this wine its top 5 Star rating with these gushing notes: “Wildly perfumed with a peachy, floral, apple confit, cinnamon and nutmeg nose. Beautiful nutty flavors of pink grapefruit, Marmalade and caramel mingling with honey and figs, fresh apricots, raisins and oranges. Bold and opulent.”

each of Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz, all aged for 13 months in French oak. This is a beautifully constructed Post Scriptum, elegant and graceful, yet focused, precise and flavorful. It is designed to have all of its parts in place, not to make you go “wow.” Aromatic and laced with floral nuances, it has a sappy taste in its youth, with some tannin pop and astringency on the finish that will integrate in time. This should develop well and drink decently early on, but give it a year or two in the cellar to settle down for best results. Bargain hunters will find that Post Scriptum is a particularly good value this year. On Day 1, there wasn’t much to choose from between this and big brother Chryseia, although they separated more significantly on Day 2. If you can’t spring for the pricier big brother, dive in right here. Drink 2014-2022. "

superior to previous bottlings. This has a very sensuous nose, well defined and tightly wound, unfurling to reveal molasses, quince, scorched earth and a touch of leather. Very subtle. The palate is medium-bodied with good tension, fine acidity and balance, very subtle towards the finish with dried orange peel, nutmeg, a sprinkle of cardamom and walnut. Harmonious and graceful, this is a beautiful d’Oliveira. Tasted April 2010.
Note by Neal Martin - in http://blog.wine-journal.com

•Made this one last over three or four months. A good vintage Madeira, though not a profound one. Fairly straightforward notes of caramel, orange peel, and brown gravy. Plenty of acidity. A great match for chocolate chip cookies.
Note by Niagara - in Cellar Tracker

•Opened to have a glass on Father's Day. Huge, brothy nose with that, beefy, cooking onion thing that I so often find in Madeira. A hint of maple syrup and some alcohol. (This was popped and poured, and I will nurse the bottle over the next several months, and I know that the alcohol will integrate with some decanting or time in an open bottle.) Gorgeous palate, salty, bracing, yet with a nice hint of coffee and molasses on the long finish. Finally this finishes out with just a kiss of brine and mouthwatering acidity.

shows quite a little extract, tannin and even a little spirit. Nevertheless it has a very admirable structure, and a supple style that makes it easy to drink now if one appreciates impact and substance in Port. Drink now through 2018."

This is a red blend from the Symington family who, if you don't know, are behind Dow's port wines, one of the premiere port wine houses in Portugal. That's the first clue that makes this wine worthy of at least a look. Second, it's from the 2011 vintage, when Portugal and Portugese wines had a rebirth, a renewal, that saw them producing some of the best wines ever from their country. Jancis Robinson, Master of Wine and well known British wine critic said this of the 2011 vintage in Portugal: "...there is little doubt that 2011 produced some stunning vintage ports, into which more effort and skill has gone than any other previous vintage in the Douro. And I find it impossible to think of any other wine region, anywhere in the world, that produced better wines." It is also worthwhile to note that Dow's 2011 port wine was named Wine Spectator's number one wine of the year in 2014 with a score of 99 points. The 2011 Vale Do Bomfim received a respectable 90 points from Wine Spectator-- for a sub-$10 wine.

While this Vale Do Bomfim is not a port wine, it is from the Douro and had the same weather conditions (ideal!) and zeitgeist that the port wines experienced, from one of the top port wine producers-- and we reap the reward by getting a fantastic, old-world wine at a song of a price. But this wine is not new to us; it's been on the Hi-Time radar for at least the last decade, as we've featured it in numerous December newsletters (it made the "Stocking Stuffer" section at least twice!) and previously ran it as a wine of the month. Having typed all that as an introduction, know that this 2011 is the best version we've had; we say that not to downvote the other years, which we thoroughly enjoyed, but to uplift this bottling as being exemplary. It's made from a blend of grapes commonly used for port wines that have more recently found their well-deserved place at the non-fortified, dry red wine table: 50% Tinta Barroca, 20% Touriga Nacional, 15% Touriga Franca and 15% Tinta Roriz.

The nose is loaded with dark and red fruits, vibrant spice, beef jerky, a touch of cocoa and a light waft of floral perfume. Ripe red plum was the main fruit component we smelled and tasted (and loved!). The palate is sweet with ripe red fruits and silky tannins but it's not jammy and overdone. It's a great warm-weather red at it's not a monstrously big wine as far as body and acidity but has plenty to offer when paired with barbecued meats and burgers and other casual spring/summer fare.
