their first Casteel Reserve Pinot Noir, blending select barrels from several different vineyard sites. It turned out to be a very exciting wine.
ROBERT PARKER'S THE WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "The 2008 Pinot Noir Casteel Reserve is a blend of the winery’s best barrels. The process of selection must have been quite a task given the raw materials. The expressive bouquet of sandalwood, Asian spices, underbrush, rose petal, incense, and assorted black fruits leaps from the glass. On the palate it displays dense, succulent fruit, outstanding volume, precision, and balance. Give it 5-6 years in the cellar and drink it through 2028."
WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS - "This focused red shows a lively balance to the open-textured cherry, plum and cinnamon flavors, pointing into a juicy, expressive finish that's wrapped in fine tannins. Best from 2012 through 2018. 619 cases made."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "Combining fruit from several sweet spots on their property (and reflecting two Dijon clones and a bit of Wadenswil), the Bethel Heights 2010 Pinot Noir Casteel Reserve displays a delightfully juicy and flower-bedecked amalgam of red and black currant, elderberry and cherry, as well as a polished feel and saliva-inducing undertone of nut oils and salted, fatty roasting pan scrapings that send my salivary glands into palpitations. And there’s a real ping of energy in this wine’s dynamic and sustained finish. This ought to be worth following for a decade."

palate drenching flavors that possess excellent concentration and focused power that is shaped by the very firm tannic spine that should assure an exceptionally long life. which increases hangtime and ultimately complexity. Planted in 1999, these Dijon clones are cane-pruned to reduce yield and have separate shoots for maximum cluster exposure. The nose on this wine is loaded with fresh cherry fruit, cherry cola, a light peppery spice and touch of earth. The term “Burgundian” comes to mind upon smelling it. The palate is loaded with good, forward fruit, lush tannins and good depth. Cherry, tobaccco and black tea flavors lead the charge with touches of earth and blueberries closely following. A fairly good-sized wine, this will stand up to red meats easily. Very nice wine.

quote Robert Parker:
"I have said it so many times that it may be rebundant, but for readers who by-passed purchasing my heavyweight 1990 tome, Burgundy, let me repeat it - Lalou Bize-Leroy stands alone at the top of Burgundy's quality hierarchy. Because she is a perfectionist, and because she has had the courage to produce wines from low yield and bottle them naturally, without fining or filtration."
-Robert M. PARKER Jr.'s Guide PARKER des Vins de France
The nose is very fresh for a 2000-- still lots of cherry fruit, spice, spun sugar and pomegranate fruit leather notes. And the color is a proper Burgundy color: pale translucent darkish red with a touch of copper on the edges. The palate is a wonderland of flavors, from the simplicity of young black cherry to notes of cedar plank or redwood, mixed brown spices (cinnamon, allspice, clove) and more pomegranate and Belgian kriek lambic.
This is an austere wine that echoes the sweetness of youth, surmounted with a glorious layer of acidity enwrapped in a myriad of flavors and scents as described above. Two foods that came to mind to pair with this were either a rosemary/herb-encrusted chicken or pork loin with cranberries/currants.
