The Burlotto family, one of the oldest producers of Barolo, achieved fame during the seventy-seven years that Commendatore Giovan Battista Burlotto (1850-1927) served as winemaker. Read More...
He pioneered selling Barolo in bottle rather than cask and his wines were highly regarded internationally. Today his great-great-grandson, Fabio Allessandria, is the winemaker. Pelaverga is an old, and rare, grape variety which the family has grown since 1800 in the town of Verduno.

The 2011 has a cherry-red color and aromas of Bing cherries with hints of white pepper. In contrast to the lighter style made by some wineries, Burlotto's Pelaverga is full-bodied and flavorful finishing with bright fruit. This is a great warm weather red and will accompany beef, lamb and Northern Italian dishes.

The complex nose of roses, blackberries, peppercorn and spices is matched by an equally dense and sophisticated palate of earth and dark fruits. Savory herbs and subtle brown spices harmonize with the fruit and bring liveliness to the sturdy yet full and luscious texture and medium weight of the wine.

This wine is balanced, fresh, rightly tannic, fragrant and lush, leaving a pleasantly bitter aftertaste." A wine for all tables, particularly suited for Italian style appetizers, first courses and fresh cheeses.

WINE ADVOCATE 89
"Ratti's 2011 Dolcetto d'Alba Colombe is super-impressive. A vein of tannin keeps the fruit suspended in a tight-wire act that balances fruit, acidity and minerality beautifully. Blueberries, tar, licorice and melted road tar are all layered into the pure, long finish. The Colombe is a serious Dolcetto with plenty of tannin to pair beautifully with rich foods. This is a striking wine from Pietro Ratti."

the nostrils, convincingly stunned by such an intensity of aroma, and even more by its extraordinary purity and integrity of expression. One feels the distillation of the fruit pulp with a spirit rising from the heat of the sun and its well-defined transformation. One senses it, crystalline and lymphatic, evoking notes of raspberry and rose in a perfume of dazzling delicacy. Then on the palate one discovers it even more vividly and harmoniously active. With a taste, balanced in acid, softness and tannins, of a suppleness and force that is simply phenomenal. Its glycerin, majestic initial contact testifies that on its base of universal sensory pleasure there is a concentration of aroma and extract analytically exceptional. An absolute masterwork of nature, technique, humanity and pure passion."

One of the best things about working at Hi-Time is sifting through thousands upon thousands of wines each year before finally falling upon a real under-the-radar gem. That's exactly what happened recently in our trip to Italy when we came upon this incredibly cool wine. Ruché (roo kay) is an Italian red wine varietal from the Piedmont region that is largely used in making Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato which is a small production that was elevated to DOCG status in 2011. Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato is one of the lowest production varietals in Italy and has been grown in the area for at least one hundred years but has only recently been marketed and consumed outside of Piedmont. Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato is medium bodied with notes of pepper and wild berries and floral aromas on the nose. The wine is often characterized by moderate acidity and soft tannins.

It flows with fabulous intensity in its dark jammy fruit, with silky tannins that add support and texture. This is a dazzling wine that impresses for its voluptuous, caressing fruit and big, expansive personality. Unlike some previous vintages, the 2009 is big, but not at all overdone. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019."

The Dolcetto grape may not be familiar to many, and even ardent fans of Italian wine may have only tasted a few. The 2009 “Siri d’Jermu” bottling from Pecchenino is worth seeking out and will be a pleasure for just about any wine-drinker, not just the geeks. There is a supple, silky quality to the best Dolcettos that will excite many fans of Pinot Noir. The nose is a layered and enticing with scents of dried flowers and incense. The surprise here may be the depth and structure—Pecchenino’s “Siri d’Jermu” is from a steeply sloping vineyard based on limestone soils, providing structure and some heft to support all those pretty qualities up front. Seriously yummy wine.
