the Albarossa grape, we flipped! What is Albarossa? Well, it was a grape cultivated by Professor Giovanni Dalmasso in 1938, when he crossed the grapes Nebbiolo di Dronero with Barbera. This burly yet gorgeous wine from the Piedmont is made by Marco Bonfante, who comes from eight generations of winemakers. "Albarone" derives its name from a play on words intertwining Albarossa with Amarone, giving way to its passimento style of winemaking. The color is deep ruby with purple hues. On the nose and as reflected on the palate, you are greeted with an intense bouquet of blackberry, orange zest, plum, fig compote, violets, tobacco, morello cherries, and nutmeg. Fruit acids are medium high with plush tannins. This youthful wine is dry but intensely fruitforward. This is a big, hearty, soaring but well-balanced wine that can be drunk now, and has potential to age. This is an outstanding wine and a great value. Try pairing this with grilled steak, truffle risotto, potato dishes or cheeses."

Ampelographer believe that the grape is most likely indigenous to this area of Piedmont and recent DNA profiling identified a parent-offspring relationship with Nebbiolo. Outside of Piedmont, it is found in the Lombardy region of Oltrepò Pavese where the grape is known as Ughetta.[1] In Gattinara, Vespolina is sometimes blended with Nebbiolo and Bonarda Piemontese.[2] Unlike the white Italian grape Vespaiolo, the root of the name Vespolina does not have a direct connection with vespe or wasp. However the true origins of the name are still unclear.

Burlotto is a historical winery that goes back to 1850, when G.B. (Giovan Battista) Burlotto founded the winery, in the Piedmontese village of Verduno. Mr. Burlotto’s achievements were only rivaled by Biondi-Santi and Vega-Sicilia, as he gained superstar status in a world dominated by French wines. Among his other achievements, G.B. was the first in the area to bottle his wine (as opposed to distributing by cask) and he also became the official supplier to the Royal House of Savoy, which once ruled Piedmont, as well as becoming “The Only Supplier to the Duke of Abruzzi’s Arctic Expedition to the North Pole.”

of the Monvigliero and Acclivi crus. The difference between the Burlotto Nebbiolo and their famed Baroli is a shorter time in wood. The wine ages for 2 ½ years in Slavonian and Allier large oak casks.

Its vibrant red color is reminiscent of a fine Burgundy, with flavors of Morello cherry, violets, and with medium acidity and palate weight. Lingering notes of wood spice, rose petal, and hint of orange peel on the finish defines it as Nebbiolo. This has enough heft to accompany roasts, but juicy enough for a well-made burger, so it could easily become your house wine, or stow a bottle of this in your cellar for a year and reap the benefits.

This is fantastic juice from one of the top producers in Piemonte, Italy. Their vineyards (their first familial purchase in the 1950s was a hectare of land not far from the Canale d'Alba) are located in the best Barbera-producing regions of Roero-- the northern part of d’Alba and just south of d’Asti. Third generation winemaker Federico Faccenda has taken Cascina Chicco to the next level since taking over in the 1980s, integrating modern winemaking technologies, with Roero Arneis DOCG being one of his excellent results. This is easy-to-drink, approachable wine-- you can enjoy it with or without food. It is quite well balanced with great acidity, soft texture and smooth tannins. The eye sees a bright ruby color, with aromas and tastes of uplifting cherry and lovely dark fruits, hints of spice. The finish is long, savory and relaxed. Drink for next 3-4 years.

Barolo is a place of peasants and royalty. The king of Savoy famously owned a prominent Barolo winery, but the most famous wines today come from old farming families working small plots of land. Chiara Boschis is part of the Borgogno clan who helped define the best of Barolo from the 1760s. Her father and two brothers ran the family winery leaving little place for Chiara. When the last heir of another Barolo farming family, E. Pira, suddenly passed away Chiara bought the historic brand and transformed it. Chiara’s innovations have largely been in the vineyard, reducing yields to focus flavors. During her second harvest at E. Pira in 1994, a concerned neighbor called Chiara’s father to inquire if he thought his daughter was totally nuts—she had simply dropped more crop at pruning than any of the Barolo old-timers had ever seen. Chiara’s methods are hands-on and intense, demanding a small production. She recently doubled the size of E. Pira—from 1,500 cases a year to nearly 3,000. Production on her signature wine, “Cannubi” Barolo is just 800cs.
