the Albarossa grape, we flipped! What is Albarossa? Well, it was a grape cultivated by Professor Giovanni Dalmasso in 1938, when he crossed the grapes Nebbiolo di Dronero with Barbera. This burly yet gorgeous wine from the Piedmont is made by Marco Bonfante, who comes from eight generations of winemakers. "Albarone" derives its name from a play on words intertwining Albarossa with Amarone, giving way to its passimento style of winemaking. The color is deep ruby with purple hues. On the nose and as reflected on the palate, you are greeted with an intense bouquet of blackberry, orange zest, plum, fig compote, violets, tobacco, morello cherries, and nutmeg. Fruit acids are medium high with plush tannins. This youthful wine is dry but intensely fruitforward. This is a big, hearty, soaring but well-balanced wine that can be drunk now, and has potential to age. This is an outstanding wine and a great value. Try pairing this with grilled steak, truffle risotto, potato dishes or cheeses."

The Burlotto family, one of the oldest producers of Barolo, achieved fame during the seventy-seven years that Commendatore Giovan Battista Burlotto (1850-1927) served as winemaker. Read More...
He pioneered selling Barolo in bottle rather than cask and his wines were highly regarded internationally. Today his great-great-grandson, Fabio Allessandria, is the winemaker. Pelaverga is an old, and rare, grape variety which the family has grown since 1800 in the town of Verduno.

A cherry-red color and aromas of Bing cherries with hints of white pepper. In contrast to the lighter style made by some wineries, Burlotto's Pelaverga is full-bodied and flavorful finishing with bright fruit. This is a great warm weather red and will accompany beef, lamb and Northern Italian dishes.

comprised of two hillside parcels, planted by Ermanno in 1971. The Contis believe strongly in the consortium’s philosophy, following non-interventionist practices in their pursuit of the truest wine possible. Boca encompasses twelve hectares amongst five villages, split amongst eleven different vineyard owners. While Nebbiolo is the principal grape, Vespolina and Uva Rara are integral parts of the DOC as well. The soils are composed of limestone, clay and sand, similar in profile to Gattinara, which is a short 10km drive to the southwest. Castello Conti farms organically, then after a manual harvest, spontaneous fermentation occurs in steel cuve. The wine then spends three undisturbed years in both botti (500L barrels) and a variety of larger barrels, with no batonnage. No sulphur is added until a minimal dose at bottling.

The 2009 is composed of almost 90% Nebbiolo, although the vineyard is planted to 20% Vespolina. Concentrated, with a deep robe, it expresses more like the 1984 than the immediately preceding vintages. That is to say, it has a touch of game in its nose and flavors, the tannins are more pronounced while retaining its linear structure. The wine spent 3 years in 9 hl tonneau.

at a supermarket or large retailer. In fact, these Nebbiolo-based wines from Northern Italy are appearing for the first time in the United States. These wines share flavor characteristics of a high quality Barolo or Barbaresco, but show a bit more minerality and finesse. The wines of IL Chiosso show how successfully the noble Nebbiolo grape grows in Alto Piedmont. For those of you who have discovered Alto Piedmont, here are two new wines to enjoy and add to your repertoire. For the uninitiated, this is a perfect opportunity to explore a brilliant expression of the Nebbiolo grape in a region which may be new to you at a fantastic price.

The 2008 IL Chiosso Gattinara is a fragrant, complex and harmonious wine. What makes it special is a combination of terroir, adept winemaking and seven years of age, putting this wine in the perfect spot for drinking now. This wine is like an aged Barolo or Barbaresco with more minerality as the volcanic porphyry soils add to the interest of this wine. In fact, this is what we are drinking now as we wait for the well-structured 2010 Barolos to soften with age. Wines from the appellation of Gattinara have been awarded the highest quality designation for Italian wine (DOCG) for good reason.

This wine is medium garnet with a tawny rim. Expressive and very complex on the nose with notes of dusty rose, dried violets, tar, black tea, dried cherries, red and black currants, raspberries, anise and balsamic notes. On the palate, the wine is dry, full bodied with drying yet smooth tannins. The fruit is fresher on the palate with cherries, black raspberry, autumn spices including cardamom, cinnamon, and licorice. The acidity and beguiling savory quality lends itself to food. The finish goes on and on. It is well put together and well-balanced, showing nice refinement.

For the uninitiated, this is a perfect opportunity to explore a brilliant expression of the Nebbiolo grape in a region which may be new to you at a fantastic price.

The 2010 IL Chiosso Fara comes from grapes grown in soil composed of clays, sands and minerals from the Alps. Nebbiolo is blended with Vespolina and Uva Rara grapes before aging in large French and Slavonian oak barrels for three years. The Fara appellation is quite small resulting in limited production and even fewer bottles making it to the United States. It is a wine of substance and structure, which pairs well with grilled meats and cheeses such as Pecorino Romano.

Medium ruby with garnet reflections. Aromas of rose, dusty cherry, strawberry, orange peel, potpourri, and sweet fresh-rolled tobacco. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with Nebbiolo tannins making it capable of aging. Despite this, the wine is light on its feet with a supple texture. Refreshing acidity makes this wine lively, displaying a bright red fruited character. The aromatics continue to increase with aeration, adding complexity. This drinks well now and calls for Osso Bucco or rack of lamb.

for cultivating the Nebbiolo, Croatina, Vespolina and Uva rara native grape varieties. The average life span of the vines is 25 to 30 years, with a yield of 40 quintals per hectare. The average annual production is 5000 bottles. The Guyot system is used for pruning, and the average density is 3000 plants per hectare. The grapes are picked at different times according to the variety, and follow the winemaking phases separately. After the destemming and the pressing process, fermentation with maceration takes place for about 15/25, with daily pumping over and breaking up of the cap. After malolactic fermentation, a natural process taking place during the spring, Bramaterra DOC wines are aged in 10/30 hectolitre oak tanks for at least 48 months (24 months for Coste della Sesia Rosso DOC), a considerably longer period of time than the one required by their DOC regulation. The wine is then bottled and kept for a minimum of 6 months prior to distribution in order to optimize the wine ripening process, in keeping with La Palazzina’s primary goal of obtaining the maximum quality of its wines.

Fermentation in cement tanks softens the wine and allows for a more gentle extraction of tannins while lending a unique texture. The wine is then aged in tonneaux for 12 months. The wine is a shining example of Nebbiolo. Bright and fresh with notes of sweet tar and rose petals opening to reveal cassis and spice.

1913 marked the inaugural vintage for Luigi Minuto thus forming Cascina Luisin. This set up the Minuto family to become one of the oldest wine making families in Barbaresco. Not only are they one of the oldest, but they were the first to bottle and sell wine on a commercial level in the early 1930s. It is important to remember that unlike other regions in Italy, Piedmont has a very short history with quality wine making. Post WWII gave rise to the quality we have come to expect from the Barbaresco and Barolo. The names Minuto and Gaja are the first brought up when discussing the historical producers who paved the way.

Today Luigi’s great grandson, Luigi, who is now in his 70’s continues on the family winemaking tradition with his son Roberto. Roberto is 7th generation to make wine, the 4th to live under the same roof to which the winery is attached by a small patio that looks out over the Rabajà vineyard. The family philosophy is meticulous vineyard care and they hold great respect for upholding traditional winemaking practices in the winery.

The wines of Cascina Luisin are well known for their accessibility in their youth with great core fruit that holds up well and evolves with age.
