the Albarossa grape, we flipped! What is Albarossa? Well, it was a grape cultivated by Professor Giovanni Dalmasso in 1938, when he crossed the grapes Nebbiolo di Dronero with Barbera. This burly yet gorgeous wine from the Piedmont is made by Marco Bonfante, who comes from eight generations of winemakers. "Albarone" derives its name from a play on words intertwining Albarossa with Amarone, giving way to its passimento style of winemaking. The color is deep ruby with purple hues. On the nose and as reflected on the palate, you are greeted with an intense bouquet of blackberry, orange zest, plum, fig compote, violets, tobacco, morello cherries, and nutmeg. Fruit acids are medium high with plush tannins. This youthful wine is dry but intensely fruitforward. This is a big, hearty, soaring but well-balanced wine that can be drunk now, and has potential to age. This is an outstanding wine and a great value. Try pairing this with grilled steak, truffle risotto, potato dishes or cheeses."

and wildflowers as does Nebbiolo, but its tannins are softer.

Ampelographer believe that the grape is most likely indigenous to this area of Piedmont and recent DNA profiling identified a parent-offspring relationship with Nebbiolo. Outside of Piedmont, it is found in the Lombardy region of Oltrepò Pavese where the grape is known as Ughetta.[1] In Gattinara, Vespolina is sometimes blended with Nebbiolo and Bonarda Piemontese.[2] Unlike the white Italian grape Vespaiolo, the root of the name Vespolina does not have a direct connection with vespe or wasp. However the true origins of the name are still unclear.

vintages and represents the pinnacle of Braida’s winemaking ability. Deep ruby with purple hues. Ample, rich and complex bouquet, with intense notes of wild berries, florals, vanilla, liquorice and cocoa. A warm mouth feel with a deep structure, while at the same time elegant, harmonious and sensual, leading to a long finish. Accompanies savory meat dishes, roasts, game and aged cheeses. This can be enjoyed now with some decanting, but will age nicely as well.

We are excited to share our bounty of beautiful Barbera wines from Braida. This winery was founded over fifty years ago in Piedmont by Giacomo Bologna who realized the inherent potential of the Barbera grape. Up to that point, others were content to produce simple table wines, which lacked complexity or ageability. Controlling yields in the vineyard and employing strict winemaking practices in the cellar greatly improved the quality of the wine. Giacomo also began using French barriques to age his wine, which was a practice unknown at that time among Barbera winemakers.

Today, the third generation of the family continues their pursuit of elevating the Barbera grape to the status of noble grapes, which is normally reserved for other international varieties. Their efforts have paid off and are apparent in every sip you take. These are fantastic wines of purity and depth.

With strict attention to detail, Braida produces exceptional wines. The Bricco Dell'Uccellone and Ai Suma bottlings are serious wines, which demonstrate the heights which the Barbera grape can attain. The quality is outstanding with a textural mouth feel which is polished from start to finish.

Ratings from these trio of wines have not yet been released, but prior vintages have received outstanding scores from Robert Parker, Wine Spectator and other critics. They have also received the coveted Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses) awarded by the influential Italian food and wine magazine, Gambero Rosso. Based on our tastings of these delicious wines, we expect excellent reviews again. Bravissimo to Braida!

bouquet of blackberry, cigar box, and freshly tilled Earth. This medium bodied velvety wine finishes with a bright acids and a persistent finish. The Burlotto Barbera d’Alba is a substantial wine that can be consumed young, but will evolve magnificently in the bottle.

Burlotto is a historical winery that goes back to 1850, when G.B. (Giovan Battista) Burlotto founded the winery, in the Piedmontese village of Verduno. Mr. Burlotto’s achievements were only rivaled by Biondi-Santi and Vega-Sicilia, as he gained superstar status in a world dominated by French wines. Among his other achievements, G.B. was the first in the area to bottle his wine (as opposed to distributing by cask) and he also became the official supplier to the Royal House of Savoy, which once ruled Piedmont, as well as becoming “The Only Supplier to the Duke of Abruzzi’s Arctic Expedition to the North Pole.”

of the Monvigliero and Acclivi crus. The difference between the Burlotto Nebbiolo and their famed Baroli is a shorter time in wood. The wine ages for 2 ½ years in Slavonian and Allier large oak casks.

Its vibrant red color is reminiscent of a fine Burgundy, with flavors of Morello cherry, violets, and with medium acidity and palate weight. Lingering notes of wood spice, rose petal, and hint of orange peel on the finish defines it as Nebbiolo. This has enough heft to accompany roasts, but juicy enough for a well-made burger, so it could easily become your house wine, or stow a bottle of this in your cellar for a year and reap the benefits.

This is fantastic juice from one of the top producers in Piemonte, Italy. Their vineyards (their first familial purchase in the 1950s was a hectare of land not far from the Canale d'Alba) are located in the best Barbera-producing regions of Roero-- the northern part of d’Alba and just south of d’Asti. Third generation winemaker Federico Faccenda has taken Cascina Chicco to the next level since taking over in the 1980s, integrating modern winemaking technologies, with Roero Arneis DOCG being one of his excellent results. This is easy-to-drink, approachable wine-- you can enjoy it with or without food. It is quite well balanced with great acidity, soft texture and smooth tannins. The eye sees a bright ruby color, with aromas and tastes of uplifting cherry and lovely dark fruits, hints of spice. The finish is long, savory and relaxed. Drink for next 3-4 years.

In 2000 they decided to cultivate a very old and difficult white grape variety, Timorasso. Since then, Piercarlo and Elisa have furiously studied this ancient grape variety and planted vines in five different vineyards with the aim of cultivating Timorasso grapes unique and distinct from one another. In 2006, after years of cultivation, Piercarlo and Elisa decided to present two different wines from Timorasso; the first to represent the complexity of the grape and its terroir, Derthona, and the second to represent La Colombera, Il Montino.

The Timorasso in this wine comes from Il Montino and La Colombera and reflects the essence of this grape variety. It is fermented in stainless steel and ages on the lees for nine months.
The color is clear-intense yellow gold. The bouquet is full and fruity with notes of nectarine, acacia flowers, whitehorn and honey with a bright mineral character. A very dry wine that is warm, round, and well balanced. Finishes with solid structure and persistence.

La Spinetta’s first Barbaresco wine came from the “Gallina” Cru in Nieve, but a significant portion grows world class Barbera. Barbera “Gallina” is perhaps the finest example in this selection of La Spinetta’s rare balance of richness and purity.
