the Albarossa grape, we flipped! What is Albarossa? Well, it was a grape cultivated by Professor Giovanni Dalmasso in 1938, when he crossed the grapes Nebbiolo di Dronero with Barbera. This burly yet gorgeous wine from the Piedmont is made by Marco Bonfante, who comes from eight generations of winemakers. "Albarone" derives its name from a play on words intertwining Albarossa with Amarone, giving way to its passimento style of winemaking. The color is deep ruby with purple hues. On the nose and as reflected on the palate, you are greeted with an intense bouquet of blackberry, orange zest, plum, fig compote, violets, tobacco, morello cherries, and nutmeg. Fruit acids are medium high with plush tannins. This youthful wine is dry but intensely fruitforward. This is a big, hearty, soaring but well-balanced wine that can be drunk now, and has potential to age. This is an outstanding wine and a great value. Try pairing this with grilled steak, truffle risotto, potato dishes or cheeses."

mint and sweet spices meld into an exotic melange of dark blue and purplish fruit. The 2011 is deep, resonant and beautifully layered to the core. Intense ruby red with purple hues. Notes of red berries, mint and vanilla. The bouquet is rich, aromatic and complex with a remarkable intensity and concentration. The wine is generous, voluptuous and full-bodied with a multidimensional structure, perfectly balanced between the fruit, acid and high quality oak with a persistent and silky long finish. This pairs well with meat dishes, roasts and aged cheeses.

We are excited to share our bounty of beautiful Barbera wines from Braida. This winery was founded over fifty years ago in Piedmont by Giacomo Bologna who realized the inherent potential of the Barbera grape. Up to that point, others were content to produce simple table wines, which lacked complexity or ageability. Controlling yields in the vineyard and employing strict winemaking practices in the cellar greatly improved the quality of the wine. Giacomo also began using French barriques to age his wine, which was a practice unknown at that time among Barbera winemakers.

Today, the third generation of the family continues their pursuit of elevating the Barbera grape to the status of noble grapes, which is normally reserved for other international varieties. Their efforts have paid off and are apparent in every sip you take. These are fantastic wines of purity and depth.

With strict attention to detail, Braida produces exceptional wines. The Bricco Dell'Uccellone and Ai Suma bottlings are serious wines, which demonstrate the heights which the Barbera grape can attain. The quality is outstanding with a textural mouth feel which is polished from start to finish.

Ratings from these trio of wines have not yet been released, but prior vintages have received outstanding scores from Robert Parker, Wine Spectator and other critics. They have also received the coveted Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses) awarded by the influential Italian food and wine magazine, Gambero Rosso. Based on our tastings of these delicious wines, we expect excellent reviews again. Bravissimo to Braida!

comprised of two hillside parcels, planted by Ermanno in 1971. The Contis believe strongly in the consortium’s philosophy, following non-interventionist practices in their pursuit of the truest wine possible. Boca encompasses twelve hectares amongst five villages, split amongst eleven different vineyard owners. While Nebbiolo is the principal grape, Vespolina and Uva Rara are integral parts of the DOC as well. The soils are composed of limestone, clay and sand, similar in profile to Gattinara, which is a short 10km drive to the southwest. Castello Conti farms organically, then after a manual harvest, spontaneous fermentation occurs in steel cuve. The wine then spends three undisturbed years in both botti (500L barrels) and a variety of larger barrels, with no batonnage. No sulphur is added until a minimal dose at bottling.

The 2009 is composed of almost 90% Nebbiolo, although the vineyard is planted to 20% Vespolina. Concentrated, with a deep robe, it expresses more like the 1984 than the immediately preceding vintages. That is to say, it has a touch of game in its nose and flavors, the tannins are more pronounced while retaining its linear structure. The wine spent 3 years in 9 hl tonneau.

The latest edition “Vini d’Italia” (Gambero Rosso Editore), sets the estate within the “natural agronomy” category. Sulphur- and copper-based products are utilized predominantly. Spontaneous cover crops (grass cover) are left between the rows of vines, the grass is mowed and the soil is tilled so to work the plant substance (green manure) into the ground. In 2000 they decided to cultivate a very old and difficult white grape variety, Timorasso. Since then, Piercarlo and Elisa have furiously studied this ancient grape variety and planted vines in five different vineyards with the aim of cultivating Timorasso grapes unique and distinct from one another. In 2006, after years of cultivation, Piercarlo and Elisa decided to present two different wines from Timorasso; the first to represent the complexity of the grape and its terroir, Derthona, and the second to represent La Colombera, Il Montino.

The Timorasso in this wine comes from Il Montino and La Colombera and reflects the essence of this grape variety. It is fermented in stainless steel and ages on the lees for nine months.
The color is clear-intense yellow gold. The bouquet is full and fruity with notes of nectarine, acacia flowers, whitehorn and honey with a bright mineral character. A very dry wine that is warm, round, and well balanced. Finishes with solid structure and persistence.

for cultivating the Nebbiolo, Croatina, Vespolina and Uva rara native grape varieties. The average life span of the vines is 25 to 30 years, with a yield of 40 quintals per hectare. The average annual production is 5000 bottles. The Guyot system is used for pruning, and the average density is 3000 plants per hectare. The grapes are picked at different times according to the variety, and follow the winemaking phases separately. After the destemming and the pressing process, fermentation with maceration takes place for about 15/25, with daily pumping over and breaking up of the cap. After malolactic fermentation, a natural process taking place during the spring, Bramaterra DOC wines are aged in 10/30 hectolitre oak tanks for at least 48 months (24 months for Coste della Sesia Rosso DOC), a considerably longer period of time than the one required by their DOC regulation. The wine is then bottled and kept for a minimum of 6 months prior to distribution in order to optimize the wine ripening process, in keeping with La Palazzina’s primary goal of obtaining the maximum quality of its wines.
