Seriously…why can’t more producers make wine this good…and at this price! Aaron Jackson grew up in the Paso Robles region, and he’s been making wine since he was a teenager (literally!). Read More...
That being said, he’s found many vineyards that are so secluded that other producers don’t even know where those vineyards are! Blended with just a splash of Syrah, the wine opens with briary aromatics of fresh red and black fruits, wild berries, melted licorice, hibiscus flower, and subtle smoke. The palate is soft, round, and juicy, with briary blackberry, cherry pie, peppered beef, and toffee notes. Snappy acid keeps the palate fresh on the long and focused finish. A bright and approachable Petite Sirah, it brings forth the fruit-forward nature of both Paso Robles and the 2008 vintage, whilst still giving the generous mouthfeel and roundness that is the hallmark of Petite.

the task at hand is. So being the hardcore surfer that he is, you can imagine how dedicated to winemaking Aaron must be when he has to leave those firing Central Coast point breaks to head for the vineyards! His wines have been staples at our store for years, and it's amazing how he can make Petite Sirah taste so good, keep it complex yet easy to drink, and sell such a tasty wine for a reasonable price!

Aaron's flagship wine is always a blend of his very best barrels of Petite Sirah. A blend of 5 vineyards all grown on calcareous/limestone soils, the aromatics show smoked meat, black pepper, lavender, dark chocolate, blueberry, and melted blackberry fruits. The palate steers more towards fresh fruit rather than the dried fruit side, with wild blackberry, bramble, and blueberry. Peppered beef, espresso, toasty oak, and spice hit on the mid palate before the finish sing on with sweet but gravelly tannins. A dose of Syrah adds mid palate and spice. Only 323 cases produced!

Amador and Lodi) combine lush berry and fierce spice into a wine characterized by its incandescence. Deeply luscious and succulent blackberries ignite this vintage of our rich rubyapparition. Somerston Wines and their Priest Ranch. This is a sustainably-farmed vineyard that is producing some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the Napa Valley, yet they are flying under the radar, even for many who live in the Napa Valley. Some of their Cabernet vines are 40 years old, and while they keep a little for themselves, other wineries such as Kathryn Hall and Orin Swift have gladly stepped up to obtain the grapes!

Owner Allan Chapman is a phenomenal steward of the land (one of the best we've seen anywhere in California), and the winemaking team of Craig Becker and Kent Jarman (also of Kenefick and Joseph Kent) assure that the ensuing wines remain unmanipulated, and show distinct terroir!

This is the fourth release of Priest Ranch Petite Sirah from the Somerston Estate. The wine was racked an amazing six times to tame the sometimes high level of tannin natural to Petite Sirah. This 2009 vintage is an inky wine with dark fruit aromas of warm berry pie and ripe plum. The palate offers supple dark cherry flavors, star anise and cinnamon with a wonderful balance of firm yet integrated tannins. This is an amazing wine!

Retro Cellars was founded in 2003 when Mike and Kara Dunn, natives of the Napa Valley wine industry, decided to make a wine of their own. Their current production includes two Petite Sirahs, Read More...
one from the historic Park Muscatine Vineyard on Howell Mountain, and a Napa Valley Petite Sirah from the valley floor. Their wines embody the concept of “terroir”, a wine’s expression of the place of origin in the bottle, and an old world winemaking style that Mike learned from his dad, Randy.

When Mike and Kara decided to make a wine of their own, they knew that they wanted to honor the history of the vineyard as well as their families foundations in the Napa Valley wine industry. The historic Park Muscatine vineyard on Howell Mountain was chosen in part because Mike has known this vineyard since his childhood, pruning the vineyard in winter, and harvesting the fruit in the fall. With its scant ton per acre production, this vineyard is a gem. They chose the Retro name to pay hommage to the generational groundwork that’s been laid for their endeavor.

ANTONIO GALLONI 92+ POINTS - "Retro’s 2009 Petite Sirah Howell Mountain has come together beautifully over the last few months. Some of the early wildness that was present six months ago has subsided and been replaced by silky tannins for Petite. The exuberance and intensity of the fruit are there, but today the 2009 comes across as a bit compact. My sense is that the wine is going through a bit of a closed stage, as it was fabulous a few months ago."

the bouquet provides a smoky oak scent that has nuances of patent malt and dark chocolate. On the palate, round rich flavors of dense concentrated black fruits meld with those of mocha and deeply toasted oak. The ripe grapes that 2012 vintage provided has translated into a wine with a richness that coats the mouth with a luscious creamy texture. Runquist has gone to great lengths to keep the tannins in check and the result is a full satisfying finish.

located at the mouth of Dutch Henry Canyon. For over 75 years the property was primarily maintained as a farm and plum orchard, with vines intermingled amongst the trees. In 1990, the orchards were replanted to vineyard, where there are currently 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Sirah vines, in addition to a three acre 50+ year old Petite Sirah block that John Peterson helped plant as a child.

The wines are made by the ever-talented Bob Foley, who makes his own wines under the winery name Robert Foley, as well as the wines at Hourglass. He also made the wines at Pride Mountain for 15 years.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes: "Glass staining material, inky dark in color with ripe berry pie and briar aromas. The mid palate is very mouth-coating and the wine resolves with surprisingly gentle, soft tannins in the finish."

distinct blackberry aromas.

This is a wine of weight and balance. The flavors are intense with extract of black currants and blackberry concentrate. A dusting of nutmeg and cracked peppercorns adds savory components while ample chewy tannin adds to the power and texture of the wine. The wine is almost purple-black in color. Thirty minutes of decanting will enhance the dark berry flavors. This blockbuster wine will go best with hearty flavors, like grilled and roasted meats, bitter vegetables, strong cheeses and anything with lots of garlic.

WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS - "Vivid blueberry, licorice and blackberry aromatics leap out of the glass, but on the palate the flavors are dense and delicious, with touches of spice and vanillin that give this a profile of cobbler à la mode. Features dense tannins, but stays polished. Drink now through 2022. 208 cases made."
