Tomero is one of the wineries in the Carlos Pulenta (Vistalba) portfolio. These are traditional Argentine wine varietals with classic varietal character that is always true to their terroir. Read More...
Most Tomero wines are sourced from high-elevation vineyards in Valle de Uco, a sub-appellation of Mendoza nestled against the base of the Andes. The Valle de Uco is located 130km southeast from the city of Mendoza. Mr. Antonio Pulenta came upon these lands more than 30 years ago and began the planting of vineyards in what today is known as Finca los Alamos. It is undoubtedly a vineyard of inestimable value due to its location, its old age and the quality of its grapes.

The Petit Verdot grape is a classic Bordeaux blend varietal that isn't used as much in modern times due to how late it ripens on its 'home' turf. With new world (i.e. warmer) climes steadying its ripening reliability, Petit Verdot has perhaps found more appropriate homes (Argentina, Chile, Argentina and numerous states in the USA) and has been able to stand on its own as a single varietal. This Tomero Petit Verdot clearly shows how good the grape can be in a warmer climate as a single varietal-- it is frankly delicious.

The nose is amazing. Plum preserves, mixed brown spices and touches of licorice and earth lead to plumper, riper, voluptuous fruits: quite the set of plums, blueberries, blackberries and even persimmon. Midnight florals and worn leather add depth, balance and beauty. Quite a complex noseful for the reasonable price.

The palate keeps it sexy as rounded tannins and a viscous mouthfeel leads to quite the panoply of flavors. The fruits come to the fore with more plum, strawberry, persimmon and cherry cola in the limelight as they are nearly upstaged by the warm, rich spice and caco flavors. A touch of briar and fruit leather lead to an upbeat finish, rich with further fruit. Appropriate acidity keeps it from becoming too jammy as the finish lasts and lasts. Very ebullient, big, bold but balanced wine. Pair with hearty meat dishes, barbecue, even burgers or aged cheeses.
