the task at hand is. So being the hardcore surfer that he is, you can imagine how dedicated to winemaking Aaron must be when he has to leave those firing Central Coast point breaks to head for the vineyards! His wines have been staples at our store for years, and it's amazing how he can make Petite Sirah taste so good, keep it complex yet easy to drink, and sell such a tasty wine for a reasonable price!

Aaron's flagship wine is always a blend of his very best barrels of Petite Sirah. A blend of 5 vineyards all grown on calcareous/limestone soils, the aromatics show smoked meat, black pepper, lavender, dark chocolate, blueberry, and melted blackberry fruits. The palate steers more towards fresh fruit rather than the dried fruit side, with wild blackberry, bramble, and blueberry. Peppered beef, espresso, toasty oak, and spice hit on the mid palate before the finish sing on with sweet but gravelly tannins. A dose of Syrah adds mid palate and spice. Only 323 cases produced!

of the city of Paso Robles and just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Here, the surrounding peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range act as a gateway between the ocean-cooled environs below the grade and the warmer climes above the grade. When the days heat up in the areas north and east of Margarita Vineyard, the air rises to create a vacuum that pulls marine breezes and fog inland over the peaks, and right through the vineyard. This means the fruit gets ripe, without any “off” flavors, yet the cooling afternoon breezes help the resulting wine to retain freshness and acidity.

The 2011 Zinfandel bursts with bright, fresh aromas of wild blackberries and raspberry jam with suggestions of cola and cocoa. Juicy flavors of cherry, strawberry and boysenberry anticipate accents of cedar and white pepper.

development of intensely flavored fruit. Cold soaked for 48 hours prior to fermentation for a gentle extraction of color and flavor, the wine was racked to a combination of French (70%) and American (30%) oak barrels, where it aged for 15 months prior to blending and bottling. Small lots of Malbec and Syrah were incorporated into the final blend for added dimension.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with enticing aromas of plum, cedar, vanilla, tobacco and leather. Smooth flavors of black cherry, blueberry, mint leaf and spice are integrated into a broad, chewy texture. Elegant tannins unfurl into a sleek, effortless finish.

the surrounding peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range act as a gateway between one region to the south that is exceedingly ocean-cooled, and another to the north that is much, much warmer (sometimes downright hot!). Renegade is a blend of 62% Syrah, 28% Petit Verdot, and 10% Malbec. The wine opens with extravagant aromas of black fruit, blueberry, vanilla bean and smoked bacon. Flavors of black cherry, black currant and wild raspberry cascade along a plush, mouthfilling texture along with trailing notes of cola, spice and toasty oak. Power yields to elegance on the finish, with clean structure and smooth tannins leading the way.

projects in the works, but one of the show stoppers was their Zinfandel! Turns out that since 2007, they have been searching for a Zinfandel vineyard whereby they could produce a quintessentially “Paso” Zin. They struck it rich with Cushman Vineyard and “Pound for Pound” was born! Styled like the wines that made Paso Robles famous, this gigantic, layered, mammoth of a wine is showstopper. The nose offers a whopping dose of cherry cola, cranberry sauce, black licorice and red plum, with notes of star anise, fennel and cola berry. The finish is packed with zingy red fruit and fresh herb notes. Weighty but with fine, soft tannins, the addition of Mourvedre and Syrah add density and length to the finish.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - The most up front and ready to go in the lineup, the 2012 Pound for Pound is 100% Zinfandel and saw 16 months in 40% new French. A medium to full-bodied, textured, layered and downright delicious effort, it offers up plenty of blackberry jam, underbrush, spice and hints of leather in its clean, nicely balanced personality. It’s a rock-solid effort to drink over the coming 3-5 years.

throughout the summer and fall. Harvest was earlier than normal in the greater Paso Robles region, though more typical for the cooler areas where the grapes for this wine were grown. 2013 has been referred to as a “blockbuster vintage” by respected growers, and this vintage of Bishop’s Peak Cabernet Sauvignon is reflective of that quality.

8% merlot, 6% malbec, 5% petit verdot and 1% cabernet franc A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% merlot, 6% malbec, 5% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2013 Bishop’s Peak Cabernet Sauvignon expresses bright aromas of red currant, sweet plum and candied red apples. With a rich texture, this medium-full bodied wine has flavors of juicy blackberry and cinnamon spice, layered with notes of graphite and earth. The silky, smooth tannins make this wine a perfect match for seared filet mignon or prosciutto wrapped figs and gorgonzola.

Last year, winemaker Edgar Torres brought us a couple wines that were simply amazing! This year is no different, other than the fact that he has a new wine that is really gets us excited! Read More...
His latest bottling is called "Toro de Paso", a blend of 37% Tempranillo, 26% Grenache, and 37% Merlot. The Tempranillo and Grenache are a couple of the primary grapes in many Spanish reds, and coming from this Central Coast region, calling this wine Toro de Paso just made sense. From the first pour, we were hooked, as this wine displays an intense garnet color with a purple hue, and aromas of violets, spice, dried cherries, strawberries, plums, and violets. Similar flavors follow suit, where they are joined by blueberries, blackberries, minerals, grilled meat, and just the right amount of tannin. Rich, juicy, forward, and still retaining good structure, this wine is tasty now, and should continue to drink well for another 5-7 years. Could this Spanish/Bordeaux blend be the next big style to come out of Paso Robles?...We think other wineries should take note!

Edgar makes wines that knock our socks off! The intensity of these wines are rivaled by few here in the United States and we suggest you check out what Edgar can do! El CabRhone is a play on words, as this is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Rhone varietals (30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre). The wine offers a lovely blackberry and plum core which is surrounded by cinnamon and sweet applewood smoke notes, with orange-peel-candied-in-chocolate elements. Fine tannins and elegant acidity combine with the pure fruit and spices for a long, seamless finish. Only 145 cases were produced!

block in the vineyard. The top of our mountain is less steep, which has allowed for the creation of a slight amount of top soil. This captures a bit more moisture and nutrients than the hillside Rhone plantings, making it a more suitable home for Cabernet and the smaller plantings of Merlot and Cab Franc. The bedrock below is still limestone rich though, and perhaps not other varietal showcases the impressive blend of ripeness and acid as does our Cabernet.

The dark opaque ruby color gives a good indication of the level of extraction achieved in this wine. The nose is heavy with dark fruits and essential oil of spring flowers. This is followed by strong varietal flavors of dark chocolate, cassis and spice. Full, round tannins produce the trademark a rich chalky finish that the soil imparts on the wine. While very rewarding to drink now, will easily cellar for up to twelve additional years.
