the task at hand is. So being the hardcore surfer that he is, you can imagine how dedicated to winemaking Aaron must be when he has to leave those firing Central Coast point breaks to head for the vineyards! His wines have been staples at our store for years, and it's amazing how he can make Petite Sirah taste so good, keep it complex yet easy to drink, and sell such a tasty wine for a reasonable price!

Aaron's flagship wine is always a blend of his very best barrels of Petite Sirah. A blend of 5 vineyards all grown on calcareous/limestone soils, the aromatics show smoked meat, black pepper, lavender, dark chocolate, blueberry, and melted blackberry fruits. The palate steers more towards fresh fruit rather than the dried fruit side, with wild blackberry, bramble, and blueberry. Peppered beef, espresso, toasty oak, and spice hit on the mid palate before the finish sing on with sweet but gravelly tannins. A dose of Syrah adds mid palate and spice. Only 323 cases produced!

development of intensely flavored fruit. Cold soaked for 48 hours prior to fermentation for a gentle extraction of color and flavor, the wine was racked to a combination of French (70%) and American (30%) oak barrels, where it aged for 15 months prior to blending and bottling. Small lots of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot were incorporated into the final blend for added dimension.

This Cabernet Sauvignon offers warm aromas of dusty black cherry and plum with hints of cocoa and anise. Dense, layered flavors of black currant and blackberry are accented by notes of vanilla, tobacco and spice. Plush tannins glide into a lengthy, luscious finish.

the surrounding peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range act as a gateway between one region to the south that is exceedingly ocean-cooled, and another to the north that is much, much warmer (sometimes downright hot!). When the days heat up in the areas north and east of Margarita Vineyard, the air rises to create a vacuum that pulls marine breezes and fog inland over the peaks, and right through the vineyard. This means the fruit gets ripe, without any “off” flavors, yet the cooling afternoon breezes help the resulting wine to retain freshness and acidity. Renegade is a blend of 62% Syrah, 28% Petit Verdot, and 10% Malbec. The wine opens with extravagant aromas of black fruit, blueberry, vanilla bean and smoked bacon. Flavors of black cherry, black currant and wild raspberry cascade along a plush, mouthfilling texture along with trailing notes of cola, spice and toasty oak. Power yields to elegance on the finish, with clean structure and smooth tannins leading the way.

The wines are, generally speaking, upfront and fruit-loaded, yet always offer solid complexity, good richness and overall very well-made profiles.

Made from declassified lots destined for McPrice’s Beautiful Earth and Altas Vinas (released under his McPrice Myers label), the 2010 Hand Over Fist is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre that comes from west side Paso Robles vineyards. Aged 20 months in French oak puncheons, it offers up a solid array of licorice, black fruits, earth and hints of leather to go with a medium to full-bodied, supple and beautifully balanced palate that carries juicy acidity and fine tannin. Another winner, it’s a rock- solid bottle of wine that will continue to drink nicely through 2018. Drink now-2018."

projects in the works, but one of the show stoppers was their Zinfandel! Turns out that since 2007, they have been searching for a Zinfandel vineyard whereby they could produce a quintessentially “Paso” Zin. They struck it rich with Cushman Vineyard and “Pound for Pound” was born! Styled like the wines that made Paso Robles famous, this gigantic, layered, mammoth of a wine is showstopper. The nose offers a whopping dose of cherry cola, cranberry sauce, black licorice and red plum, with notes of star anise, fennel and cola berry. The finish is packed with zingy red fruit and fresh herb notes. Weighty but with fine, soft tannins, the addition of Mourvedre and Syrah add density and length to the finish.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - The most up front and ready to go in the lineup, the 2012 Pound for Pound is 100% Zinfandel and saw 16 months in 40% new French. A medium to full-bodied, textured, layered and downright delicious effort, it offers up plenty of blackberry jam, underbrush, spice and hints of leather in its clean, nicely balanced personality. It’s a rock-solid effort to drink over the coming 3-5 years.

Last year, winemaker Edgar Torres brought us a couple wines that were simply amazing! This year is no different, other than the fact that he has a new wine that is really gets us excited! Read More...
His latest bottling is called "Toro de Paso", a blend of 37% Tempranillo, 26% Grenache, and 37% Merlot. The Tempranillo and Grenache are a couple of the primary grapes in many Spanish reds, and coming from this Central Coast region, calling this wine Toro de Paso just made sense. From the first pour, we were hooked, as this wine displays an intense garnet color with a purple hue, and aromas of violets, spice, dried cherries, strawberries, plums, and violets. Similar flavors follow suit, where they are joined by blueberries, blackberries, minerals, grilled meat, and just the right amount of tannin. Rich, juicy, forward, and still retaining good structure, this wine is tasty now, and should continue to drink well for another 5-7 years. Could this Spanish/Bordeaux blend be the next big style to come out of Paso Robles?...We think other wineries should take note!

he fell in love with wine and decided to make his livelihood in the wine business. Hey…can you blame him?!? He has worked with many of the superstars of the Central Coast, including Matt Garretson, Augie Hug, and Alta Maria Vineyards. Today, he is the assistant winemaker at Barrel 27, and works alongside one of our best friends, McPrice Myers (what a mentor!), when Edgar isn’t tinkering on his own wines. We sampled his latest releases a few months ago, and they really knocked our socks off! The intensity of these wines are rivaled by few here in the United States, and we suggest you check out what Edgar can do!

“E-Squared” is a nickname given to Edgar and his sister Erika by their parents, and it's a blend of Erika’s favorite grape (Syrah) and Edgar's (Grenache). The E-Squared has become one of Edgar's most popular wines, and one he has made for several years in a row now.

As with the 2010 E-squared, this vintage is again sourced from Luna Matta Vineyard on the Westside Paso (Syrah) and Grenache from Cedar Lane Vineyard in Arroyo Seco. A little more savory but still packing some great ripe fruit with medium ruby color. The nose offers aromas of mulberry, fresh coffee grounds and cocoa powder, with secondary notes of red plum, red currant, and an earthy component. On the palate it comes off soft with fine tannins and a supple finish. This wine showcases better at cellar temperature and pairs well with gamey meats.

to many of the greatest Syrah-based wines in California (the 1OO-pt Sine Qua Non "Poker Face"being a noteworthy example), it gives Broadside another great opportunity to highlight remarkable terroir through the transparent elegance of restrained Chardonnay.

The Chardonnay is picked early based on the winemaker's preference of acid structure and flavor development, leaving plenty of space for the character of the vineyard to shine through. The grapes are whole-cluster pressed, cold-settled, and left to ferment naturally in barrel and concrete egg. Green-gold with invitingly subtle notes of brioche, apple and the sea. Fleshes out on the palate with good weight and substance, echoing the fruit-aromatics with Old World style minerality. Finishes rich and dry, interplaying texture and acidity.

block in the vineyard. The top of our mountain is less steep, which has allowed for the creation of a slight amount of top soil. This captures a bit more moisture and nutrients than the hillside Rhone plantings, making it a more suitable home for Cabernet and the smaller plantings of Merlot and Cab Franc. The bedrock below is still limestone rich though, and perhaps not other varietal showcases the impressive blend of ripeness and acid as does our Cabernet.

The dark opaque ruby color gives a good indication of the level of extraction achieved in this wine. The nose is heavy with dark fruits and essential oil of spring flowers. This is followed by strong varietal flavors of dark chocolate, cassis and spice. Full, round tannins produce the trademark a rich chalky finish that the soil imparts on the wine. While very rewarding to drink now, will easily cellar for up to twelve additional years.
