Seriously…why can’t more producers make wine this good…and at this price! Aaron Jackson grew up in the Paso Robles region, and he’s been making wine since he was a teenager (literally!). Read More...
That being said, he’s found many vineyards that are so secluded that other producers don’t even know where those vineyards are! Blended with just a splash of Syrah, the wine opens with briary aromatics of fresh red and black fruits, wild berries, melted licorice, hibiscus flower, and subtle smoke. The palate is soft, round, and juicy, with briary blackberry, cherry pie, peppered beef, and toffee notes. Snappy acid keeps the palate fresh on the long and focused finish. A bright and approachable Petite Sirah, it brings forth the fruit-forward nature of both Paso Robles and the 2008 vintage, whilst still giving the generous mouthfeel and roundness that is the hallmark of Petite.

the task at hand is. So being the hardcore surfer that he is, you can imagine how dedicated to winemaking Aaron must be when he has to leave those firing Central Coast point breaks to head for the vineyards! His wines have been staples at our store for years, and it's amazing how he can make Petite Sirah taste so good, keep it complex yet easy to drink, and sell such a tasty wine for a reasonable price!

Aaron's flagship wine is always a blend of his very best barrels of Petite Sirah. A blend of 5 vineyards all grown on calcareous/limestone soils, the aromatics show smoked meat, black pepper, lavender, dark chocolate, blueberry, and melted blackberry fruits. The palate steers more towards fresh fruit rather than the dried fruit side, with wild blackberry, bramble, and blueberry. Peppered beef, espresso, toasty oak, and spice hit on the mid palate before the finish sing on with sweet but gravelly tannins. A dose of Syrah adds mid palate and spice. Only 323 cases produced!

development of intensely flavored fruit. Cold soaked for 48 hours prior to fermentation for a gentle extraction of color and flavor, the wine was racked to a combination of French (70%) and American (30%) oak barrels, where it aged for 15 months prior to blending and bottling. Small lots of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot were incorporated into the final blend for added dimension.

This Cabernet Sauvignon offers warm aromas of dusty black cherry and plum with hints of cocoa and anise. Dense, layered flavors of black currant and blackberry are accented by notes of vanilla, tobacco and spice. Plush tannins glide into a lengthy, luscious finish.

the surrounding peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range act as a gateway between one region to the south that is exceedingly ocean-cooled, and another to the north that is much, much warmer (sometimes downright hot!). When the days heat up in the areas north and east of Margarita Vineyard, the air rises to create a vacuum that pulls marine breezes and fog inland over the peaks, and right through the vineyard. This means the fruit gets ripe, without any “off” flavors, yet the cooling afternoon breezes help the resulting wine to retain freshness and acidity. Renegade is a blend of 62% Syrah, 28% Petit Verdot, and 10% Malbec. The wine opens with extravagant aromas of black fruit, blueberry, vanilla bean and smoked bacon. Flavors of black cherry, black currant and wild raspberry cascade along a plush, mouthfilling texture along with trailing notes of cola, spice and toasty oak. Power yields to elegance on the finish, with clean structure and smooth tannins leading the way.

“E-Squared” is a nickname given to Edgar and his sister Erika by their parents, and it's a blend of Erika’s favorite grape (Syrah) and Edgar's (Grenache). The E-Squared has become one of Edgar's most popular wines, and one he has made for several years in a row now.

As with the 2010 E-squared, this vintage is again sourced from Luna Matta Vineyard on the Westside Paso (Syrah) and Grenache from Cedar Lane Vineyard in Arroyo Seco. A little more savory but still packing some great ripe fruit with medium ruby color. The nose offers aromas of mulberry, fresh coffee grounds and cocoa powder, with secondary notes of red plum, red currant, and an earthy component. On the palate it comes off soft with fine tannins and a supple finish. This wine showcases better at cellar temperature and pairs well with gamey meats.

to many of the greatest Syrah-based wines in California (the 1OO-pt Sine Qua Non "Poker Face"being a noteworthy example), it gives Broadside another great opportunity to highlight remarkable terroir through the transparent elegance of restrained Chardonnay.

The Chardonnay is picked early based on the winemaker's preference of acid structure and flavor development, leaving plenty of space for the character of the vineyard to shine through. The grapes are whole-cluster pressed, cold-settled, and left to ferment naturally in barrel and concrete egg. Green-gold with invitingly subtle notes of brioche, apple and the sea. Fleshes out on the palate with good weight and substance, echoing the fruit-aromatics with Old World style minerality. Finishes rich and dry, interplaying texture and acidity.

for fantastic ripening. Warm days during harvest also tend to produce wines that come of age quicker, thus requiring shorter barrel aging time and wonderfully fresh wines in the bottle. The Zinfandel for 2012 came from Kate’s Vineyard on Kiler Canyon Road and the Herder Vineyard near Creston to the East of Paso Robles. B y combining a cool climate vineyard with a warm climate vineyard, Calcareous can produce a blended Zin that displays the strengths of both.

The beautiful dark ruby color gives evidence of a dense yet lively wine. The nose is an intriguing blend of tart bing cherry and rich boysenberry pie aromas. The mouth feel continues this trend of opposites with wonderful acid balancing full bodied flavors of blackberry, licorice and pepper. The finish is rich yet clean, offering a hint of American oak vanilla.

a few tasting rooms his free-spirited parents would pack a picnic and take him on their wine tasting excursions. The aroma of the wine and the tasting rooms combined with his mom’s delectable picnic were two of the early influences that led me to making wine.

After years of studying wine abroad in Italy and working on becoming a Certified Sommelier, he realized that he wanted to make great wine, not just taste and recommend it to customers. The gods must have been smiling upon him because he got a job at one of the most sought-after wineries in Paso Robles...Booker! From picking the grapes to learning the creative techniques of blending and barrel selection and to the final step of bottling, Orion came to love the art of making wine. He soon became an assistant winemaker to Eric Jensen, the owner of the Booker Winery and Vineyard. In 2011 I decided it was time to take the plunge and make his own wine and started his own label, Dilecta, which means “lovely” or “loved” in Latin.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "Also beautiful, the 2011 The Tiller checks in as a blend of 64% Grenache (from the Russell Family Vineyard) and 36% Syrah (from the Caliza Vineyard). It should be even better in another year and drink nicely through 2019. Drink now-2019."
