Vineyards are planted. Gone are the deep soils and compost of the rain forest, all washed away into the creeks, leaving thin soils over sandstone based assemblage of intermixed heavy clays, sandy loams, and clay loams. Blended into this mix in random ratios is a mélange of rocks varying in origins and type from igneous to metamorphic to sedimentary shale so degraded it can be crushed by hand.
The diversity of this vineyard, emphasized and cared-for by David Hirsch, have made this property a beacon for wineries searching out the best Pinot Noir fruit in Sonoma, including the likes of Williams & Selyem, Failla, Lioco, and Siduri.
2010 marks the Hirsch family's 30th year of farming on the extreme Sonoma Coast, and it is the first vintage produced by their fantastic new winemaker Ross Cobb (formerly of Flowers Winery and Williams Selyem). Upon opening, dark fruits, pomegranate, figs, orange blossom and bergamot on the nose. Evolving with time to show dried and fresh flowers, cherries and forest floor. On the palate, taut acidity, supple tannins and the restrained fruit of a cool vintage.

soon as we tried this beauty, everybody fell in love with it. And when we found out we could retail it for under $11, there wasn't a person on the wine staff whose eyes didn't pop out of their heads like a cartoon character. Not only are we convinced of the wine's value, but the L.A. Times just made this their Wine of the Week!
No joke, if this wine was priced just under $20, it would still be worth the money, and we have not found a domestic Pinot Noir value like this in quite some time! Sourced from Monterey, San Luis, and Santa Barbara counties, this wine has a dark ruby color with a great nose of cherry, cola, and a wonder floral component. Flavors of cherry, cola, plum, herb, are intermixed with lovely acid to keep it fresh, lively, and not too heavy. While this is a juicy and upfront wine, this has the texture and secondary characteristics of a wine that costs much, much more.

In 2009 the Syrahs were picked between October 5 and November 4 illustrating just how long the harvest can stretch in Santa Barbara. The straight Santa Barbara County is an excellent starting point, and easily one of the best values readers will find in California Syrah.
"The 2009 Syrah Larner Vineyard shows off layers of blackberries, black olives, earthiness, tar and smoke. It is a broad, large-scaled wine loaded with personality and fabulous inner perfume, but readers have to be willing to accept a measure of wildness. As is often the case with Larner, it is my belief that this vineyard’s true potential has yet to be fully tapped. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020."
