which means ďof the seaĒ in Latin - is focused on single vineyard wines from extreme coastal vineyards amidst San Luis Obispo County. In addition to these wines, each year Aaron Jackson also produce the Seafarer Pinot Noir as a special cuvee that brings together the elements from each of his vineyards. The goal is to create a wine that is more about overall texture and depth than individual site expression.

As always, Seafarer is the only vineyard blend Pinot Noir Aaron produces, bringing together fruit from all his coastal sites. The goal is to create a wine that is more about overall texture and depth than individual site expression. Based largely in the Stromsoe vineyard in Cayucos, along with Riven Rock (Cambria), Spanish Springs (Pismo Beach) and Derby West (San Simeon), the 2013 Seafarer is his favorite to date. The aromatics are intense - redolent of dried cranberry, red apple skin, white pepper, and Earl Grey tea. The palate is bright and vibrant, with a core of dark red fruit, uplifted spice, grated chocolate, roasted nuts, dried orange rind, and toasty oak. Only 225 cases produced!

on Oregonís Willamette Valley. He fell in love with Pinot Noir and wanted to make Pinot Noir that would rival those from Burgundy. His search lead him to winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash, one of the most talented winemakers in Oregon, and a person Wine Spectator believes has "...the perfect blend of science, artistry and passion."

Due to the transition of soil types from Volcanic to Sedimentary in the Revana Vineyard, the fruit tends to produce unique flavor profiles that stray slightly from what we have come to expect from the Dundee Hills. Pleasant earthiness is highlighted by aromas gushing with red fruit and cocoa nibs, culminating with a caress of sweet red plums. On the entrance, the Pinot Noir is delicate, and teases with red berry bramble, then explodes mid-palate with juicy intense fruit. The transition to the finish is refined, leaving beautiful flavors of red currants and terrior.

WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS - "Seductively aromatic, with firm tannins around a lithe core of black cherry, smoke and a touch of mint, finishing with harmony, elegance and a steely mineral character. Approachable, but may develop more with cellaring. Best from 2016 through 2022. 1,800 cases made."

Looking for a rewarding Pinot Noir experience that doesnít break the bank? Look no further! This bargain-priced Pinot leads off with a scintillating nose of cherry and red raspberry reiterated to the palate in conjunction with hints of dark plum and spice. One could truly use the B-Word in conjunction with this wine as its palate profile bears no small resemblance to a well-done Cote de Beaune wine from, letís say, Savigny or Chorey. Considering that many winemakers call their wines Burgundian without having the slightest idea what that really means, itís a true compliment to winemaker Rollin Soles to have produced a wine so genuinely reminiscent of an Old World classic! Great bang-for-the-buck here!

on two of them, Ritaís Crown and Salsipuedes. Since then Salispuedes has been cut into two entities, the Radian Vineyard and the Bentrock Vineyard. Why CalPERS? Why the wine business for the parking of California public employee pension money? I have no idea. Iím sure you can get a customer service number off of their web site if you want to pursue it. What matters to me is that they moved to town, developed three of the most riveting new vineyards in the appellation, and then gave me and my colleague, Ken Brown, the opportunity to scour over the plantings and choose our picks of the litter. Currently I am working with two stunning Pinot Noir sections and a block of Chardonnay at Radian, and I have one block of Pinot Noir at Bentrock and Ritaís Crown respectively. The day to day farming is being handled by an outfit called Atlas Vineyard Management. Their execution is as good as it gets.

After you drive through the gate at Radian you arrive at a funky little mid century dwelling that serves as the office for the vineyard operations. Opposite the office, in a little canyon that is just inside the Sta. Rita Hills appellation line, lies Appellationís Edge. With respect to being cool, breezy, and well drained, Edgy is a 10 out of 10. When you are there you can feel the tension, starting with the fact that cluster sampling is not comfortable in blocks this steep. Why did I opt for the anxiety that this section of Pinot Noir could very possibly bring? Because if all the energy in its terroir translates into the enhanced fruit and acidity that I am predicting, then the climb up the hill for cluster samples will be like a stairway to enological heaven. Indeed, the first couple wines have been riveting. As you might imagine, they have been very dark, extracted and expressive."

"For most wine grapes in general, ripening in a cool climate usually results in wines that are more intense. When you ripen Pinot Noir on the extremely cool western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills, intense can be an understatement. In a year, 2012, that gave us a slew of big Pinots, the slow ripening fruit in Appellation's Edge gave us the biggest. Super dark, dense, chunky, yet elegant, this block continues to make some of the most amazing wine in the Appellation. And it's not just the big part of it that is so impressive; it's the fine-tuned structure that is haunting."

gifts with a radical approach in the farming that is restrained by nothing. I have worked over the years with many vineyards, some of them good, some of them great. In almost every case, at some point along the way I will find myself thinking, ďIf only the grower would have done some things slightly different; if only the timing could have been a little tighter; it would have made a difference.Ē And a lot of time, itís not that the grower wasn't amenable to it. Itís just that I was not there on a day to day basis to say, ďOkay, NOW! Now is when we should leaf pull; now is when we should cluster thin,Ē etc. Well, with Oceanís Ghost, it is not unusual for me to start my day in this section of the vineyard. If something needs tweaking, I drive by the shop and check in with my vineyard manager. Of course I always find a number of things that need attention, but when itís in the Ghost, he knows exactly where to put it on the list of priorities. While my whole ranch canít be perfect all of the time, farming at its peak in at least a couple of places is important to me. When you put the words Optimum Quod Possum* on the labels of your product, you need to have some avenues where you can practice your best craftsmanship. For me, Oceanís Ghost is one of them.

Why the name Oceanís Ghost for this cuvee? All of the soils on my ranch are the remnants of an ancient sea. From the deep sandy loams in our lower vineyards, to the shallow decomposed sandstone on TOP CREAMíS bench, evidence of the oceanís touch is everywhere. At various points above our ranch, on steeper hills, in places where erosion has taken away the skin of the mountain, you can see the pitch-white outcroppings of pure diatomaceous earth. It is no coincidence that some of the worldís largest diatomaceous deposits are mined just outside of Lompoc. In digging around on our hillsides, I have not found too many arrowheads, but I have come across little gravelly deposits, the likes of which look like fractured seashells. The soil in Oceanís Ghost is very similar to that in Top Cream. The block, however, is situated on our westernmost mesa that is completely exposed to the daily ocean breeze, making it perfect for Pinot Noir. Beginning eons ago, the ubiquitous influence of the ocean continues."
