A little something for everyone: barrel fermentation, sur-lies aging, and partial malolactic fermentation. These hand-crafted processes create a rich and elegant wine with layers of complexity.
Fresh tropical fruits like pineapple, mango and green apple greet both the nose and palate upon first sip, followed up by a touch of lemon cream. Complimented by more creamy notes of butterscotch and caramel, the wine has a long, lingering finish hinting of toasty oak.

by the chief red in residence - grenache. Our traditional Biodynamic® grenache source from Alta Loma
Vineyard in Monterey County is supplemented with a smidge of our own Estate grenache adding a discreet spiciness to the attraction. Syrah is principally sourced from Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley, which produces the closest analogue we have found to a Northern Rhône syrah - tannic and meaty in the lower registers; peppery, fruitful and delicately floral in the top, all the while showing great balance and harmony. A small group of non-irrigated, centenarian Contra Costa vineyards has provided mourvèdre for Cigare for many years and finally, a small dollop of cinsault provides a very particular fragrance of flowers and aromatic herbs.

native yeast, only the best lots were chosen to create the 2011 Eruption. The wine was blended early and bottled without filtration.
A blend of 39% Syrah, 27% Mourvèdre, 10% Malbec, 8% Petite Sirah, 8% Tempranillo, 4% Zinfandel, and 4% Grenache, the 2011 Eruption is rich and intense. The wine has aromas of dark berry, sandalwood and cocoa, giving way to flavors that are jammy, ripe and expressive. The palate is layered with supple and round tannins, making the wine both hedonistic while simultaneously elegant. The texture of this wine is perhaps its most distinguishing trait - mouth-coating with an endless finish. Be certain to have a second bottle on hand, the first won’t last very long.

which lead to very slow ripening of the fruit. The wines finally made it to maturity in the last week of October under beautiful skies. We received no rain until the 4th of November and we were able to pick each block slowly and methodically as they ripened. It was a winemakers dream. The temperate weather and extended time on the vines led to very typical cool climate Syrah characters."
"This 08 Syrah is sourced entirely from The Old Mill Vineyard, the source of Arias Syrah. We picked each block separately and fermented them with 25% stem inclusion. Aged for 24 months in all neutral, French oak, this year’s Syrah is very focused in style. It has green peppercorn, and spice accompanying the red and dark fruits. There are smokey/ meaty/bacony notes, slightly enhanced by the wildfires this year. We gave this wine extra time in the bottle in order to allow it to express its full range of flavors and aromas. It is a very structured wine with healthy natural acidity, a perfect accompaniment to grilled meats and hearty stews. For the Northern Rhone fans out there, it is very St. Joseph in style and character."

at the foot of Mt. Konocti, an ancient volcano, this prime site boasts a perfect southwestern exposure and vines rooted in well-drained, mineral-rich, red volcanic soils. Its hot sunny days, windy afternoons and nights chilled by breezes from nearby Clear Lake provide ideal conditions for three distinguished clones of Zinfandel, including Primitivo and heritage selections from Amador and Mendocino counties.
Reflecting the unique character of the Red Hills appellation, Cakebread's 2010 Zinfandel showcases bright raspberry, black cherry and dark plum aromas complemented by intriguing dusty earth, black pepper and milk chocolate scents. On the rich and lively palate, it delivers pure, deeply concentrated black raspberry, dark cherry and blackberry flavors streaked with mineral and briary spice tones. Beautifully structured with sturdy, but supple tannins, fresh acidity and a long, rich, chocolatey finish, this mountain Zinfandel wine is delightful to drink now, but will surely repay another 3-5 years of cellaring.

pears and peaches are some of the notes that emerge from this transparent, weightless wine. There is plenty of richness but no heaviness whatsoever in the glass. A beautifully chiseled finish rounds things out nicely. The Viognier Mt. Harlan was whole-cluster pressed and aged in French oak barrels with no rackings until it was prepared for bottling. This is a fabulous showing from Calera. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018."
