OVID 2011 PROPRIETARY RED "EXPERIMENT G8-1" NAPA VALLEY 750mL

Ovid Vineyards is one of the true new "cult kids on the street". The vineyards are meticulously maintained by David Abreu, and the wines are made by Andy Erickson (Screaming Eagle, Arietta, Dalla Valle, Dancing Hares, Favia) and Austin Peterson. And it doesn’t appear to matter what kind of Cabernet blends Ovid releases in any given year… the wines always have us salivating!

Notes from Winemaker Austin Peterson: We have always been intrigued by the array of alternative closures for wine. So for the 2011 G8.1 Experiment wine, we are trying out one of the most pleasing and simplest cork alternatives: the glass stopper. How will people feel about opening the bottle with less ceremony and no tools—just a firm twist of the glass stopper? How will a hermetic seal (as opposed to the very slight air exchange that occurs with cork) affect the wine’s aging profile? This is the G8.1 experiment.

The 2011 G8.1 Experiment wine contained by this novel glass stopper is a blend of eight different lots of the Bordeaux varietals we grow on the estate. Cabernet Sauvignon speaks most loudly and clearly with bright red fruits like cherry, pomegranate, plum and pluot, and a backbone of mulberry and cassis. 2011 was a vintage that favored mountain-grown fruit like ours—this blend combines aromatic intensity, elegance and balance, and you can taste the singular place that made this wine.
