reds from the more famous growing areas to the south. The R6 is a roughly equal blend of native red varieties Babich, Plavina, and Lasin aged 12 months in new American oak. All are part of the large Zinfandel family of grapes native to the region. Under 13% alcohol, the wine is lifted and high toned despite the time spent in barrel. Starting with a gentle nose of cherry kirsch and tobacco, the wines is elegant but also savage, reminiscent of red wines of the Veneto or even old school Chianti. Exceptionally food friendly this will pair with anything from goat cheese to smoked meats.

Yugoslavia in 1991. Croatia’s best known red wine is made from the Plavac Mali grape, a relative of Zinfandel. The Dingac Winery is located on the southern slopes of the Peljesac Peninsula along Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. The 2010 Peljesac (100% Plavac Mali) displays the dark berry fruit and mild spiciness of a California Zin without the heaviness or high alcohol found in some from the Golden State. On the nose you find spice, black pepper and blackberry notes which lead to sweet cherry fruit and light spice in the mouth. This is a fruit forward, uncomplicated red with the flavors of a Zin and the body of a Beaujolais Village. The slight hint of sweetness on the finish makes this a good red to serve with cheese and crackers. It will also go well with burgers, pizza, grilled sausages and
barbecued chicken.

Grgic Vina was established in 1996 by legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Croation-born Miljenko "Mike" Grgich, and his daughter, Violet. The winery is just north of the historic walled city Dubrovnik in the southern Dalmatian wine region. Mike started the winery to produce the finest wines from native Dalmatian grapes.

When Mike Grgich came to the Napa Valley in 1958 to make wine, he noticed a remarkable resemblance between the Zinfandel and Plavac Mali of his native Croatia. Some 35 years later, Mike worked with scientists at University of California, Davis to prove that Zinfandel was actually Crljenak Kaštelanski, a grape native to Croatia and parent of Plavac Mali.

and Fromenteau (Pinot Gris). The grapes are all planted together in a three-acre, biodynamically farmed vineyard and are all harvested and pressed together before vinification in barrel. This is a rolling multi-vintage blend consisting of two-thirds 2008 with the balance drawn from 2005-2007. Disgorged in January of this year, the wine is still tightly coiled but we were able to discern faint aromas of citrus blossoms, green melons and mint wafting up from our flutes. This cerebral, bone-dry Champagne showcases highly charged lime and tangerine taste impressions that are firmly supported with a stony undercarriage. Its lively acidity propels a kinetic finish that just won’t quit. A true rock-licker’s delight, this Champagne works true gustatory magic when paired with oysters or scallops.

br />Vranac is an ancient red grape varietal native to the Balkans. It is widely assumed that it is a relative of Plavac Mali (Croatia) which is the descendent of a naturally occurring hybrid of Zinfandel (Crljenak Kastelanski) and Dobricic. Like Plavac and Zinfandel, Vranac displays a dark ruby color and a fairly full body. The Pro Corde by Plantaze Winery is a reserve quality example of an extremely well-made Vranac.

This crowd pleaser sports a deep, almost purple color with deep rich black fruit flavors. Black berries and supple cherry tones dominate the aromas, bursting into a pleasurable harmonious experience on the palate. At the same time there are smoky or savory elements, like some Rhone reds. This is great with cheese, smoked meats, sausages, grilled vegetables and, of course, a nice cut of steak.
