reds from the more famous growing areas to the south. The R6 is a roughly equal blend of native red varieties Babich, Plavina, and Lasin aged 12 months in new American oak. All are part of the large Zinfandel family of grapes native to the region. Under 13% alcohol, the wine is lifted and high toned despite the time spent in barrel. Starting with a gentle nose of cherry kirsch and tobacco, the wines is elegant but also savage, reminiscent of red wines of the Veneto or even old school Chianti. Exceptionally food friendly this will pair with anything from goat cheese to smoked meats.

elegant mid-palate, persistent finish and backbone, gives it a tightly wound, precise and focused demeanor. Overall, it is an exceptionally graceful, somewhat modern and restrained Musar, bright, with that silky texture I saw in the Hochar we reviewed in this issue, while adding those layers of concentration."

of mixed white varietals planted to the regions unique marl soils and sustainably farmed. The 2013 is a blend of Laški Riesling (Welschriesling), Sauvignon Blanc, and Ravenec (Müller-Thurgau). It has only 10% alcohol and is as drinkable as wine comes. Riesling dominates the aromatics offering juicy tangerine and quince notes to the silty minerality that Crnko wines often share. As a beverage it is thirst quenching and light on its feet with invigorating acidity that makes it difficult to set down. During the summers in the village of Jarenina, locals mix it with sparkling water and then proceed to consume it long into the night.

Yugoslavia in 1991. Croatia’s best known red wine is made from the Plavac Mali grape, a relative of Zinfandel. The Dingac Winery is located on the southern slopes of the Peljesac Peninsula along Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. The 2012 Peljesac (100% Plavac Mali) displays the dark berry fruit and mild spiciness of a California Zin without the heaviness or high alcohol found in some from the Golden State. On the nose you find spice, black pepper and blackberry notes which lead to sweet cherry fruit and light spice in the mouth. This is a fruit forward, uncomplicated red with the flavors of a Zin and the body of a Beaujolais Village. The slight hint of sweetness on the finish makes this a good red to serve with cheese and crackers. It will also go well with burgers, pizza, grilled sausages and barbecued chicken.

impressed senior officers in the army following on from the French mandate of the 1920s. Major Ronald Barton, of Château Langoa-Barton, stationed in Lebanon during World War II became a great friend, strengthening the links between Chateau Musar and Bordeaux that remain to this day. Flanked by snow-covered mountains, and nestled at 1000m (3,000 feet) above sea level, the serenely beautiful Bekaa Valley is blessed with 300 days of sunshine a year, fresh mountain breezes and an average temperature of 25°C (encompassing snowy winters and hot summers). Remote and unspoilt, the Musar vineyards were ‘organic’ by default before the term was coined. A guide to the style
Hochar Père et Fils Red has been described as the ‘second’ wine of Chateau Musar, and it does bear some resemblance to the ‘Grand Vin’: rich, spicy and profoundly fruity, with a mellow quality derived from lengthy oak- and bottle ageing. Since its launch in the late 1980s, it has been sourced from a single Bekaa Valley vineyard planted in the late 1940s. When young, the wines are robust and aromatic, with baked plum, warm earth, leather, thyme and dark chocolate characters. With age they become tawnier and spicier.

the Atlas Mountains, benefit from cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean. Wine has been made in Morocco for thousands of years. Ouled Thaleb is the oldest continuously operating winery in Morocco; the vineyards were planted near Ben Slimane in the 1920s. The winery is ten miles northeast of Casablanca facing the ocean. The winemaker, Alain Graillot, a Frenchman from the Rhone Valley, has his own property in Crozes Hermitage. He stumbled upon some beautifully exposed vineyards while bicycling in the Zenata region of Morocco, and ended up starting a relationship with the winery. The 2011 Médaillon is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Syrah aged for 12 months in French oak. Dark purple garnet color. Cabernet aromas are predominant on the nose: black cherry, cassis and plum. In the mouth this red is juicy with cherry and black currant flavors, integrated oak and soft tannins. Serve with Moroccan or Middle Eastern cuisine or any rich beef or lamb dish.
