O'FOURNIER 2012 URBAN UCO MALBEC

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - The 2012 Urban Uco Malbec spent three months in oak barrels. The bouquet is well-defined with blackberry, boysenberry, touches of dark chocolate and anise. The palate offers chunky black fruit on the entry. It is fresh, a little rough round the edges, but true to what an unadulterated Malbec should be. For this price: unbeatable. Drink now-2015.

José Manuel Ortega Gil-Fournier from O. Fournier seems to be just about everywhere in the Spanish speaking world. He is one of those huge personalities animated by ideas and passion. José-Manuel owns 3 wineries in 3 countries, but also owns one of the most highly regarded restaurants in Argentina where his wife is the chef; he makes fantastic value wines with the “Urban” tier of each property, but also makes some of the most highly regarded top-end wines from the same vineyard sites. The ambition at O Fournier seems endless. We think the wines are compelling. This collection of “Urban” wines nicely shows the value side from all three estates; the Uco Valley property in Argentina, the Ribera del Duero property in Spain, and the Maule Valley estate in Chile. There is immediate drink ability and polish to these wines, but they are more than simple quaffers. There are layers of aromatics and minerality beyond the fruit—easy pleasure and refinement in the same glass.
