This is a textbook wine, especially in the exceptional 2010 vintage. Black fruit and prune is folded together with delicate tones of cigar ash, crushed mineral, licorice, white truffle and dried raspberry. Andrea Bosco, along with his father (Agostino) and mother (Carla), represent the quintessential family run and operated Piemontese winery. Long recognized by European critics, especially Decantur, as a “rising star”, Andrea’s wine making skills continue to reach new heights and new accolades here in the US.

La Serra is located in the heart of the bowl that lies below the town of La Morra and like most wines of La Morra is known for producing lighter styles of Barolo. However, though one would not confuse Andrea’s wines with the powerful, tannic monsters of, say, Serra Lunga, they are not as light in style as many other wines produced from La Serra. Part of this might be attributable to fact that his vineyard encompasses the first rows above the more powerful cru of “Brunate.” So while the label reads “La Serra”, there is definitely a presence of “Brunate” in the wines.

In the past, Andrea has experimented using new small oak barrels not because he was interested in “chasing points” or creating a style of wine for a particular palate, but because he was interested in producing the best wine possible from his land. Beginning with the 2008 vintage, he, shall we say, “got it right.” The wines no longer see any aging in small barrels, instead they spend 24 months in large, neutral oak barrels of 1,200 liters (Botte Grande). You won’t find any oak on the nose or on the palate – just pure, unadulterated nebbiolo aromas of dried strawberries, white roses and tar.

Long recognized by European critics, especially Decantur, as a “rising star”, Andrea’s wine making skills continue to reach new heights and new accolades here in the US.

Andrea has two crus from which he produces two very traditional Barolos. The first is in Verduno, where like the wines of Brangero, one is immediately struck by the aromatics of the wine. The Cru, Neirane, lies just beyond La Morra and from the soil rich in Marne, it producers a super fine, super elegant wine. The second Cru needs little introduction – La Serra.

are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. The 2010 is a beautiful version of the Bussia, with less of the approachability of some previous vintages, but tons of potential for the future. There is a lot to look forward to here. This is one of the best versions of the Bussia I can remember tasting. The 2010 stands out for its precision and crystalline purity. Readers looking for a great 2010 Barolo that won’t kill the budget should check out the 2010 Bussia. 2020 – 2035”

We are excited to be able to offer our Barolo lovers access to the exquisite wines of Aldo Conterno on a pre-sale basis. This wine is excepted to arrive in October of 2014

The Conterno family has been making wine since the 1700’s and Aldo Conterno is regarded as one of the greatest producers of Piedmont. As a young man, Aldo worked with his brother, Giovanni before striking out on his own in 1969. He developed a reputation as an innovator with a focus on quality and attention to detail and passed this dynamism on to his three sons who now run the business.

Aldo’s small property on the hill of Bussia in Monforte D’Alba has grown into a marvelous 25 hectare estate. The Aldo Conterno Barolo’s are intense and concentrated examples of perfectly ripened Nebbiolo grapes from superior terroirs, grown at a gentle altitude that allows for optimum finesse. The three top ‘Crus’ on the famed Bussia slope produce the three flagship Barolos of the estate.

ALL the wines in the line-up are wonderful examples of quality Barolo made in an excellent vintage. In fact, 2010 is widely regarded as perhaps the greatest vintage in Piedmont in two decades! The wines have plenty of structure, will benefit from cellaring and are highly collectible. Although relatively young at this point, the balance, concentration and length offer a preview of even greater things to come for those who are patient.

menthol and a hint of oak. Firm yet well-integrated tannins provide the backbone for a core of explosive fruit in this racy, extroverted wine. The Colonnello marries the round, supple personality of this site with the classic sense of structure and tannin of the year. If I were going to open any of Conterno’s 2010s before age ten it would be the Colonnello, but even then I would try to hold off. Quite simply, this is one of the very best Colonnellos in recent memory. 2020 – 2030”

WINE SPECTATOR 98 POINTS - "A beautifully crafted Barolo, with ripe cherry, plum, leather, spice, mineral and smoke elements. Starts off supple and approachable, but the gripping tannins soon move in, securing the lengthy, spice-filled finish. An underlying mineral vein adds depth. Best from 2018 through 2036. From Italy.—B.S."

JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS - "A fabulous nose of minerals, fresh roses, dark fruits. This is full bodied with a powerful structure of gorgeous subtle fruit and polished tannins. Great wine for 2010. Better in 2017."

It will be a number of years before the 2008 hits its stride, but it is fabulous, even today. The San Giuseppe is much less expressive than the Vignolo, which is typically the case when the wines are young. It will almost certainly blossom with more time in bottle.

ANTONIO GALLONI 94+ POINTS- "Sweet, silky and exceptionally well-balanced, the 2008 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is all about texture and harmony. Floral notes meld into dark red stone fruits, plums, cinnamon, tobacco and orange peel. Today the aromas are quite closed, the result of the recent bottling, but all the elements are in place for the 2008 to develop into a gorgeous Barolo. Here, it is the wine's purity above all else that is striking. With time in the glass, the aromas start to gradually open up, releasing an incredibly expressive array of floral and savory overtones. There is so much to look forward to. Drink: 2018-2038.
