A blend of fruit from Miner's Oakville property, as well as Stagecoach Vineyard, this wine is a blend of 42% Cabernet Franc, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Verdot, 9% Malbec, and 8% Merlot. With complex aromas on the nose and lush, dark fruit on the palate, Aia has beautifully integrated tannins and impressive texture.

rich and full-bodied, yet also express plenty of site-specific character.

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is seriously beautiful. A dark, imposing wine, the 2010 wraps around the palate with layers of persistent dark fruit. There is a brooding inner intensity that is highly appealing. Today, the 2010 is very primary, but it should develop nicely and continue to drink well for another decade, perhaps longer. Hints of mocha and espresso add complexity on the racy, expansive finish. The 2010 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot and 8% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022."

the mountainous regions of Howell Mountain, Pritchard Hill and Mount Veeder called for several different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon on a number of different rootstocks upon planting in 1986. The vines are dry-farmed and vertically trellised.

Fermentation of Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon occurs in both open and closed top fermenters. Certain lots are allowed to macerate on their skins for up to three weeks following fermentation. This technique produces a wine with softer, more integrated tannins, which carry fruit and oak nuances through to the palate. The wine is racked into 70% new French oak barrels for a period of 34 months. The wine is lightly filtered and then bottled.

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon from Michael Mondavi's Animo label is laced with ash, plum, graphite, smoke, incense, tobacco and licorice. With time in the glass, the fruit begins to emerge in a lush, full-bodied wine with considerable richness for the year. The Atlas Peak tannins are there, but they are nearly buried by the pure extract and concentration of the fruit. Graphite, smoke, white pepper add complexity on the close. This is an especially juicy style for the year, but it works. Drinking window: 2016 - 2026."

Merlot from the adjacent Hudson I Block joins the Cabernet Franc from the celebrated H Block on the Hudson Ranch on the Napa side of Carneros, and provides an especially juicy core to the wine. This year's blend is 54% Merlot and 46% Cabernet Franc.

ANTONIO GALLONI 91 POINTS - "Proprietor Fritz Hatton and winemaker Andy Erickson have done a fabulous job with these wines, the 2011 reds in particular. Sweet red berries, tobacco, mint, licorice and a host of savory notes are woven throughout the 2011 H Block Hudson Vineyards, a Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend. The 2011 is soft and inviting, with a focus on nuance rather than size. My impression is that the 2011 is built for near-term drinking, but like all of Arietta's reds in this challenging vintage, the H Block stands out for its sense of balance."

for wine grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1978, Donald Long and his 28 year old son David began the epic job of building roads, clearing land and finally planting wine grapes. Although David lacked a formal viticultural education, he learned hands-on by working in the vineyards and cellars of local wineries such as the Chappellet and Joseph Phelps. The first vintage of Chardonnay was harvested in 1985, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in the nineties. As his experience and knowledge of the land grew, David learned the ability of these hills to grow the very finest wine grapes. Today, with the help of a highly insightful team, David Arthur continues to cultivate rich concentrated wine grapes that in turn help them craft distinctive and memorable wines.

Chardonnay is now the anomaly, as David Arthur has sourced their Chardonnay grapes from the Oak Knoll District and Stagecoach Vineyard in Napa Valley for nearly a decade, and cherish their relationships with these independent growers that offer small parcels and unique clonal selections. The David Arthur Chardonnay style offers a wonderful balance of new world fruit expression and restrained winemaking technique.

A pale straw color with light golden green hues opens for aromas of baked apple, pineapple and guava. Following are hints of citrus blossom, toasted oak and lemon custard. The palate is rich, and long throughout with a subtle minerality. The finish demonstrates verve and persistence of stone fruit and pineapple pear. Best from 2012 to 2017.

Meritaggio is the brainchild of the Long brothers. Wanting to fulfill his desire of producing a fine Meritage blend, David set out to find clones of the five classic Bordeaux varietals. On his travels, he came across Sangiovese, which stole the spotlight from any Malbec he had ever tasted. Bob had the brilliance to name the wine “Meritaggio” in honor of Sangiovese’s Italian Heritage. This dark ruby red wine blend is bright with aromas of bramble red fruits, baked cherry plum and cassis, then layers of earth toneswild sage- bay leaf and tobacco. The palate is focused and concentrated in the middle palate layered with baked fruit cake, black tea and spicy pepper notes, and then finishes with polished-fine grain tannin.

"David Arthur's 2011 Meritaggio Estate is pretty, soft and delicate. Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon and violets all flesh out in an understated, perfumed wine with lovely length and balance. Sweet tobacco, rosemary and mint appear later, adding complexity. The 2011 was made with the lowest percentage ever of Sangiovese, as David Arthur is re-working the lineup a bit using valley floor Sangiovese in the blend, thereby freeing up estate fruit for the Sangiovese bottling. The blend is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Sangiovese, 9% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot." -Antonio Galloni

ROBERT PARKER 92 POINTS - "Auteur is a small, high-quality winery founded in 2003 by Kenneth Juhasz. The 2012 offerings appear to be the finest wines Auteur has yet made. Moreover, their new packaging is a major upgrade in aesthetics.

"As did all of these Chardonnays, the 2012 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard had its malolactic fermentation blocked. Similar to a grand cru Chablis, it offers up notes of nectarines, tangerine oil, mango and pineapple, a honeyed character, fabulous intensity and medium to full body. It, too, saw 25% new French oak and was aged 16 months in barrel. It was produced from the Chardonnay Musqué clone which provides exotic characteristics. Drink now-2020."

young guns" and give them a run for their money! For decades, Beringer has been making phenomenal, world-class wines utilizing time-honored techniques that are still used today by virtually all the high-quality producers…even by those "young guns"!

Beringer's Private Reserve Chardonnay highlights the richness and complexity of this varietal and has been one of the benchmark Chardonnays since its first vintage in 1978. Just to give you an idea of the quality, let's take a look at the scores from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate for the past few years:

2012 Vintage - 93 Points
2011 Vintage - 95 Points
2010 Vintage - 87 Points
2009 Vintage - 93 Points
2008 Vintage - 94 Points
2007 Vintage - 92 Points
2006 Vintage - 92 Points

These are scores that most producers receive every so often…but not with this consistency. This is one of the reasons why Beringer's Private Reserve Chardonnay is such in demand. And how do they do it? Well, winemaker Laurie Hook ferments the juice in French oak barrels to enhance the natural richness in the wine. Weekly lees stirring enhanced the toasty notes, and integrated the oak flavors for an overall balance. All of the wine was put through malolactic fermentation to encourage a lush creaminess. After 9 months aging, Laurie chose the most expressive lots and blended them to create this richly layered wine.

ROBERT PARKER 93 POINTS - "For its size and prominence, the St. Helena flagship Beringer winery does a remarkable job with the quality of its offerings. They have been fortunate to choose a brilliant line-up of chief winemakers, from Ed Sbragia, to Laurie Hook. The following group of wines, coming primarily from 2012 for the reds, and 2012 and 2013 for the whites, is one of the strongest I have tasted with them. That is reassuring when you consider the enormous size of the umbrella Treasury Estates that owns Beringer.

"The Chardonnay Private Reserve became famous under the helmsmanship of chief winemaker Ed Sbragia, and Laurie Hook has refined it ever so slightly by somewhat backing off the oak, and maintaining the depth and richness, but with more precision and refinement. The full-bodied 2012 Chardonnay Private Reserve exhibits wonderful orange blossom, white peach and pineapple fruit, a subtle touch of vanillin and toast, and a nicely layered, pure style with terrific fruit intensity. It is a great value, especially if you compare its quality to just about any premier cru or grand cru white Burgundy selling for 2-10 times as much. Drink now."
