"The Bandol from Pradeaux is a creature whose soul emerges from Mourvèdre. The classic cuvée is 95% Mourvèdre and 5% Grenache, with the Grenache adding spice to the bouquet and leavening Read More...
some of the drama provided by the intimidating structure of the Mourvèdre. One of the hallmarks of Pradeaux is that the grapes are never destemmed. The result is a wine of ferocious tannin in its youth, another reason for the prolonged aging in these large wooden barrels, a time for the wine to repose and find its identity as it emerges from the cocoon of tannins to reveal an exceptionally complex crowd of aromas and flavors. Although situated mere steps from the Mediterranean, harvest at Pradeaux (always manual) frequently starts in earnest for the Mourvedre during the first weeks of October. The average age of the vines is approximately 35 years and harvest levels are quite low, often in the range of 25 hectoliters per hectare. Fermentation occurs at temperatures between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius and the wines are racked into large oak ovals and foudres where they rest with occasional rackings for four years before being bottled. Neither new oak nor small barrels are ever used at Pradeaux and the red wines are never fined nor filtered. Depending on the vintage, we import between 300 and 500 cases per annum for the US market."

warm stone and licorice root notes. The long finish features a well- buried iron spine. Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah. Best from 2016 through 2028." —J.M.
WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "The 2011 Bandol La Migoua, which has the most Grenache of any of the cuvees, comes from red and blue clay soils and the highest plots on the estate. Comprised of 50% Mourvedre, 26% Cinsault, 20% Grenache and the balance Syrah, it too shows the vintage character with forward, supple and polished aromas and flavors of sweet blackberry, currants, spice and underbrush all emerging from the glass. Medium-bodied, beautifully textured and with fine tannin on the finish, it will evolve at a faster rate than most vintages of this cuvee, yet still dish out gobs of pleasure over the coming decade or more."

s most sought-after producers, Curt decided to go his own way. The wines he puts under the Sans Liege label have received lofty praise from other winemakers and consumers, and his Groundwork label is on the way to becoming one of the better values in California's Central Coast!

This is as close to the wine you’ll get to what people were quaffing in flecked black and white photographs of rural French life you saw in a book titled “Lives of the World’s People.” It’s exuberant and earnest with the petite danger the puritanical ascribe to having wine with lunch. Rock cherry, blood orange zest, coriander pod, 14th century church dust, tarragon leaf, chilled grilled lamb, apple skin, Fernet and Coke and the nagging doubt that maybe the day won’t last forever.

is bottled. The grapes are harvested then each varietal is separately fermented and barrel aged for 18 months. Doing this develops more complexity in each varietal and also allows for the very best blend to be assembled. The blend for this vintage is 53% Zinfandel, 35% Carignane, 6% Alicante Bouschet, 5% Petite Sirah, and 1% Black Malvasia.

The Zinfandel and Carignane come from the Johnson’s vineyard in Redwood Valley, Mendocino County. The fruit ripens at lower brix giving the blend red fruit high tones, bright acidity, and structure. The remaining fruit is grown by Dan Gonsalves in Oakley, Contra Costa County. This fruit gives the wine its dark fruit aromatics and much of its silky mouth feel and body.
