and David Abreu! The 2009 "Lithic" bottling hails from Shake Ridge Vineyard in Amador County, which is owned and farmed by Ann Kraemer, and sits at an elevation of 1700’ with incredible Sierra uplift soils containing loads of quartz, basalt, soapstone, and shale. Three different blocks are on rock-filled slopes with excellent exposure and drainage.
The 2010 Caldera is a stunning wine from this mountain vineyard located at 2700’ in El Dorado County. The fine red Aiken soil strewn with lava pebbles always makes Helen smile when she walks the vineyard. Dry-farmed and another year older, these 15 year old vines with their small yields resulted in what may be the most complex Caldera to date!
A blend of 65% Mourvedre, 29% Grenache, and 6% Counoise, the aromatics will have your nose in the glass for minutes – intense red licorice, heady lilac and fresh roses, paprika, new suede, gunmetal and roasted meat. The silky entry opens to a concentrated palate layered with red licorice and spice, finishing with bitter cherries and bakers’ chocolate. Only 140 cases produced!

is bottled. The grapes are harvested then each varietal is separately fermented and barrel aged for 18 months. Doing this develops more complexity in each varietal and also allows for the very best blend to be assembled. The blend for this vintage is 53% Zinfandel, 35% Carignane, 6% Alicante Bouschet, 5% Petite Sirah, and 1% Black Malvasia.
The Zinfandel and Carignane come from the Johnson’s vineyard in Redwood Valley, Mendocino County. The fruit ripens at lower brix giving the blend red fruit high tones, bright acidity, and structure. The remaining fruit is grown by Dan Gonsalves in Oakley, Contra Costa County. This fruit gives the wine its dark fruit aromatics and much of its silky mouth feel and body.

settler Johann Friedrich August Fiedler planted the first Shiraz vines in 1847. His vines flourished and the land was bought in 1865 by Gottlieb Ernst Schulz, a successful butcher who established a thriving retail business among the vines. Butchering developed into dairying, but the vineyards were always kept, until Peter, a fourth generation Schulz, and his wife, Christie, made the transition from grape growing to winemaking in the early 1990s. The Wine Advocate states that: “Over the years the winery has proven to be a reliable portfolio from top to bottom.” While Turkey Flat is perhaps best known for its highly rated Shiraz and Rosé, the winery also makes stunning old-vine Mourvèdre (Monastrell) a variety that thrives in the hot dry conditions of a Barossa summer. The 2008 is drinking beautifully now. It received a 96 point rating from James Halliday’s Wine Companion Review: “…a highly perfumed bouquet leads into a palate with more drive and intensity than I can reflect from any previous vintage; no confection here, just silky power.” We found an enticing perfume of blueberries and minerals and a rich, mouth-filling flavor full of fruit. While this will certainly accompany beef and lamb dishes it would also be a good match with your holiday turkey. Limited availability.
