quite powerful and concentrated, with slightly rustic aromas of tree bark, spices and faint flowers intermixed with notes of dark cherries and flavors of black cherries and licorice, with abundant, fine-grained tannins. A powerful red with balance to age. Drink 2014-2018."

STEPHEN TANZER'S INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLARS 92 POINTS - "(70% Samso and 30% Garnacha): Opaque ruby color and highly aromatic scents of blackberry and blueberry liquer, licorice and a hint of lavender. raspberry and dusty, loamy, earthy scents intermixed with notions of spring flowers and blackberries. There is not any oak evident in this dense effort. Its completeness and overall equilibrium are impressive, and this great value should drink well for 5-6 years, possibly longer. (There is no track record for these wines in terms of aging.)"

The wines of the small Priorat zone near Barcelona seemed to get endless press 5-10 years ago and with good reason—the vineyards were almost all rocky, steep, dangerously low-yielding, and fantastically good for quality. Now the spotlight seems to be moving to the adjacent Montsant zone which offers the same mix of old-vine Grenache and Carignan, the same slate soils, and much of the depth of Priorat—but at prices 50%-75% less than Priorat. Famed Spanish importer and vineyard hound, Jorge Ordoñez, has made a splash in the Montsant region with his newest project, Zerran. Another unbelievable value from Spain...

the palate, needing at least five years in the bottle before it all might settle down. The payoff will be to bask in its vibrant fruit and complexity. A blend based on old vine garnacha and cariñena, alon with merlot, tempranillo and cabernet, Baboix comes from a vineyard on decomposed granite in Falset."

In the holy pantheon of Spanish red wines, the big, full-bodied wines of Priorat can contend only with Rioja and Ribera del Duero for excellence and prestige. A historical appellation dating back to the 12th Century, Priorat, or “priory,” takes its name from the Carthusian Monastery of Scala Dei founded in 1194 to commemorate the spot where, legend has it, a shepherd had a beatific vision of angels ascending a stairway to heaven. Buil & Gine, a family domaine founded in 1996, has quickly risen to preeminence in the appellation, and is widely considered one of the best young producers in Priorat.

tannins and fresh acidity. Mountain herb and smoke notes keep this from turning candied, but the sweet fruit lingers nicely. Drink now through 2016"

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "The 2009 Can Blau is made up of 40% Carinena, 40% Syrah, and 20% Garnacha aged for 12 months in French oak. Wood smoke, spice box, incense, lavender, black cherry and plum aromas are followed by a mouth-filling, round, dense wine with outstanding grip and length. It over-delivers in a big way. Drink it over the next 6-8 years."

The aim here is to keep the freshness. Forty percent of the wine is aged in concrete vats, while the rest is matured in clay amphorae and used oak. The result is a restrained, soil-driven red with earthy notes, black fruit, licorice and subtle Mediterranean herbs with some floral overtones and no traces of oak. The palate is medium-bodied, with clean, penetrating flavors, lively acidity and a long finish. A delicious, serious red showing balance and personality. What more can you ask for? Drink now-2018."

Husband and wife team Sara Pérez and René Barbier (Fils) are the children of two of the great pioneers of the Priorat D.O., Josep Lluis Pérez of Mas Martinet and René Barbier of Clos Mogador. Sara and René are both very well respected vignerons in their own right, so it seemed natural that they should start a project together. For this project, they decided to stake their claim not in Priorat, but in the slightly sleepier D.O. of Monsant.

The grapes for the wines come from an approximate total of four hectares of vineyards which are owned by four different grape-growing families in Falset as well as another small plot owned by Venus. One could call Venus a négociant project, but it is more accurate to say that it is a partnership between these four families and René and Sara. Venus is these small growers’ only client, so their vineyards are farmed in accordance with the rigorous ecological standards set by the couple. The grapes for Dido come from the Falset area, from vineyards with soils based on decomposed granite called sauló. These soils are poor in organic matter and they contribute to producing grapes with great ripeness and fruit flavors. The grapes for Venus come from clay-calcareous soils between Marçà and Guiamets. These soils encourage a slow, elegant and complex ripeness.

touch of chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth, chocolate-tinged entry. There is very good acidity that hides the alcohol particularly well, maintaining balance and precision, while a lovely dash of white pepper appears on the aftertaste. Drink now-2023.

Located in the commune of La Figuera, just outside the DO of Priorat, Espectacle is a two-hectare parcel of 100-year-old Garnacha owned by Christopher and Charlotte Cannan, Rene and Isabelle Barbier and Fernando and Marta Zamora."
