Buccella's Merlot fruit comes from two blocks atop a knoll in the famed Hyde Vineyard, where harvests typically yield less than two tons per acre. It's a youthful wine that's invitingly approachable, while still offering the richness and decadence we love.
This 2009 Merlot bounces out of the glass full of very ripe, bright red cherry/plum, with a touch of cinnamon and clove-just a hint of orange peel and apricot fruit. As with the Cabernets, the texture here is full-bodied but with a very refreshing acidity and a fruit-focused finish. In the mouth the wine has structure and flow, giving you chocolate, coffee and cedar flavors. Make no mistake, this is one serious Merlot.

from the left bank of Bordeaux and competing with the famous classified growths. The grapes used to produced “Cuvée 1850” come from very old vines planted in the 1850s and not touched by the phylloxera disease that ravaged France’s vineyards in the 19th century. Because of the rarity of pre-phylloxera vines only 600 bottles of “Cuvee 1850” are produced. It’s hand-harvested with three sortings to select only perfect grapes; then on to whole berry fermentation for 30 days in small 10hl oak vats. Aged 17 months in new French oak barrels, there is neither fining nor filtration. The wine is bottled using gravity and vaccum corking to prevent contact with air.
Deep ruby-black color. Nose of coffee, cocoa, dark spices, vanilla, dark red raspberries-- very inviting in the glass, opens further with air. The palate starts with sweet cherry/berry fruit and nice tannins balanced harmoniously. An earthy note with a touch of herbals and red tea leads to a finish of more sweet fruit, spice and balance.
