from the hilly area between Belvedere and Morro d’Alba, which contains clay soils rich in limestone. The grapes undergo fermentation with skin contact for about 6 days followed by 8-10 days of malolactic fermentation. The wine produced has intense aromas of ripe red fruit, rose petals, and violets. On the palate its medium tannins are soft and velvety, laced with fresh cherry and plum flavors. Enjoyable now and over the next few years.

and Calcareous Marls. Ferment temperatures reach about 25 degrees with the wine fermented and aged in cement. 100% Montepulciano.

We’ve long been fans of the Montepulciano grape-- it makes for fantastic wine on the tasting front (climate, terroir and winemaking acumen permitting) and tends to not break the bank. Great wine for a song? We’re constantly on the lookout for that scenario. And this month, Aión delivers, capturing our Wine of the Month 2 slot.

Spicy bright red fruits, cherries, dried strawberry, black tea and touches of floral perfume, cedar and smoke fill the nose with velvet ease. The tannins on the palate are as smooth and lush, backed up by excellent, zippy acidity. Upon tasting, a nice mix of fruits and spices stand out: more forward red fruits, cherries, cranberries, red plum and pomegranate, meet up with clove and brown spices and a dash of black pepper. These flavors meld with a rich earthiness and stoney minerality, leading to a fruit-filled lengthy finish. Great bang-for-the-buck wine, Aión drinks way out of its niveau. Enjoy with pizza or Italian braised meats/meat sauces: Bolognese, carbonara, osso buoco, etc.

The Podere San Lazzaro is a family-owned company and they work organically as much as possible to respect the environment and the vineyards. The craftsmanship is very important, from the birth of the first buds until the harvest of the grapes. The philosophy is simple, total respect of nature without the use of pesticides in the vineyard. All the work is done by hand by founder and winemaker Paolo Capriotti and his father.

The vineyards are located along gentle rolling hills in between the Apennines and the coastline of the Adriatic Sea in the rising region of Marche becoming known for its exuberant value reds. The name "Podere72" is a nod to year that the vineyard was planted in 1972 by Paolo and his father with a clone of Sangiovese grosso (biotype Montalcino) and Montepulciano (Ap Mp1) one of the historic clone of Montepulciano.

"Italy's single greatest white wine buy" comes through again!

Last year, Ian D'Agata, of Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar gave the 2012 Colle Stefano Verdicchio Read More...
di Metalica an outstanding score of 94 Points and stated "I think it is probably Italy's single greatest white wine buy."

Well, the 2013 vintage just landed in our hands. It has not yet been scored, but having tasted last years and tasting this years, we were extremely pleased and delighted. This is a sizzling white hot summer sipper not to be missed!

The Verdicchio from Colle Stefano Verdicchio, has been a mainstay in our cellar for years. This organic white comes from the little town of Matelica is in the Marche region, just east of Umbria. Winemaker Fabio Marchionni took over the family vineyards from his father a few years ago, having just graduated from the new enology school in Ancona and done his apprenticeship in Germany. He keeps yields extremely low, less than forty hectoliters per hectare, and makes wine with painstaking care. You could eat off the floor of the winery (and hygiene is very important when making this kind of white wine).

Using 100% estate fruit, Fabio makes less than four thousand cases of Verdicchio, which he used to bottle, cork and label by hand in his tiny cantina (now he's sprung for a bottling machine). This wine is racy, vivid, and excellent with all kinds of seafood dishes. It is fermented and matured entirely in stainless steel (no oak) and does not undergo malolactic fermentation. His wines consistently win at least two glasses from the Gambero Rosso (since the 2001 vintage) and has twice won a perfect award of three glasses.

This wine is dry and light-bodied with crisp acidity and good structure. This wine is charming on the nose with a bouquet of nectarines, chamomile and lemon blossoms, and equally pleasing on the palate with flavors of white peach, kiwi fruit, and kaffir lime. This wine is vibrant and quenching at every sip with pleasing minerality. The finish is long and enhanced by its lively acidity. This is a wine that would pair well with grilled halibut, salads, or shrimp on the barbie. Delicious!
