out in a category crowded with good wines and it made our decision easy. Andeluna definitely has that core of sumptuous and silky fruit that is essential in a Malbec-long, richly textured, yet enlivened bybright acidity and lavish baking spices. The flavor profile is a pitch perfect balance between black fruit and red fruit (for "blackfruit" think flavors like blackberry, mulberry and currant; for "red fruit" think soft and pretty Pinot-like flavors of raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate). The Andeluna Malbec is bold and beautiful enough to make us fall in love again. Your teeth may be black after enjoying a bottle, but we're sure you'll be smiling.

tanks (50%) and oak (50%). It reveals some spicy oak notes along with a big, sweet kiss of blackberry and black raspberry fruit as well as hints of camphor and white flowers. The complex aromatics are followed by a medium to full-bodied, lush, opulent Malbec to enjoy over the next 4-5 years, perhaps longer. Drink: 2014 - 2019."

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "This dark, sappy red delivers rich, yet racy, flavors of blackberry coulis, plum skin and kirsch. Compact, with layered notes of cocoa nib, licorice and tar slowly unraveling in the long finish. Drink now through 2014. 1,300 cases imported."

Pedro Angulo and Angel Innocenti were winegrowers in their native Europe – Pedro in the Basque country and Angel in Tuscany. They immigrated to Argentina in the late 19th century and through hard work and perseverance found great success in their commercial activities.

Today the Angulo and Innocenti families have rekindled their immigrant winemaking roots. Alejandro Angulo and Mariano Innocenti, 3rd and 4th generation family members respectively, have decided to celebrate Pedro and Angel’s vintner past with the development of a unique terroir in La Consulta.

La Consulta is located in the very southern tip of the Uco Valley in the San Carlos county, some 75 miles to the south of the city of Mendoza. The district varies in altitude from 3,000 – 3,500 feet above sea level at the foot of the majestic Andes. Its high altitude and southerly location combine to offer warm sunny days with cool mountain nights. The warm sunny days lend a rich, concentration of black fruit flavors together with a soft, supple texture. The cool mountain nights contribute intense floral aromatics and racy acidity to the wines. Mariano and his uncle Alejandro chose La Consulta for its rich heritage and long tradition as Mendoza’s premier region for Malbec, dating back to the early 20th century.

in those vineyards, in Gualtallary and Altamira. They were looking for something that represents the essence of Malbec. The first vintage for this wine was 2004, when they finally found the blend and character they were looking for. The name they wanted to use for the wine was Malbec Puro, but they didn’t want any confusion with cigars, so they called it Malbec Argentino instead! It is very aromatic with floral notes, mainly violets and blue fruit, and is nicely defined. It is opulent with sweet tannins but with the hallmark of the freshness found in all the wines from those two vineyards, precise and long. Drink 2015-2020. "

toasted spice and espresso emerge on the rich finish."

WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "The 2011 Catena Malbec is produced with fruit grown in Lunlunta, Agrelo and Gualtallary fermented together with a little bit of Viognier from high altitude, which according to winemaker Alejandro Vigil had an amazing eight grams of acidity which contributed a lot of freshness to the blend. 30% of bunches fermented without destemming and as is common in the top Catena wines, these grapes from four different regions were harvested at three different points in time in search of diversity. This is very dark cherry-colored and has strong aromas of ripe plums, peach and apricot with some notes of orange rind. Medium-bodied with velvety, silky tannins, it is a good representation of Malbec in Mendoza. It is approachable now, but it should be even better in one year. "

INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR - "Bright red-ruby. Tighter and less expressive on the nose today than the cabernet sauvignon, hinting at cassis and licorice pastille. Juicy, supple and surprisingly easygoing on the palate, if a bit less chewy than the cabernet. In a distinctly elegant style, not big or superconcentrated but seamless, generous and already approachable. Finishes with smooth, sweet tannins and noteworthy energy and length."

INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR - "Bright ruby-red. Slightly high-toned aromas of blackberry, kirsch, bitter chocolate, violet and spice cake. Densely packed and smooth but also lively and light on its feet thanks to harmonious acidity. Conveys a lovely restrained sweetness to its dark berry, licorice, violet and tobacco flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins and sneaky length; in comparison, the estate's cabernet sauvignon is a bit drier and more herbal on the back end."

Over the last 15 years, Jimena Lopez developed a very personal set of fine winemaking principles: use great fruit from old vines in a special location, handle all the winemaking steps herself, and put her stamp of approval (a thumbprint) on the label. Jimena's lifelong plan has been to craft a wine using these principles, so when she came across the 7-acre, Cantella vineyard in Lujan de Cuyo farmed entirely by Don Pepe and his family, she finally put her plan into action. This low yield Malbec vineyard planted by his father in 1908 produces small, intense berries that produce a wine not only with deep dark color, like graffito, but also amazing concentration, complexity and structure. Deep and bright color that evokes its name. Ethereal rose petal incense and spicy perfume with a bass note of smoky earth and espresso. Juicy and medium-bodied, it expands and intensifies in the mouth, gaining density and complexity as it is savored. The palate balances red currant fruit and hints of black pepper with loads of mouth-coating ripe tannins that are common in old vine Malbecs. Finishes with smooth, lush tannins, ripe acidity and good length. The ultimate in steak wine. You'd be wise to let this old vine beauty open a bit before delving into it, so get the decanter out for this one.

in Australia, France, North and South America, Jed's three young Australian winemakers have travelled the world's wine regions in search of ideal vineyard sites. Mendoza has an extraordinary 450 years of winemaking history; however, only in the last 10 years has the Uco Valley emerged as one of the world's most exciting wine producing regions. Situated in the foothills of the Andes at 1200 meters above sea level, the pristine environment in the Uco Valley yields elegant wines with unrivaled purity. The nose on this 2012 bottling has attractive elements of spice, cured meats, dark cassis and boysenberry fruits and a layer of floral perfume. The palate is similarly diverse and interesting with excellent dark fruits, plum and mixed berries, spice, charred earth and graphite minerality with a finishing flourish of blueberry, cassis and a hint of cola berry. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity course throughout, uplifiting and invigorating the wine. Great wine, excellent value. Only 2,700 cases produced; 600 cases designated for USA.

be recreated or replicated. Every Layer Cake wine is a rich, lush expression that truly reflects the place, the land and their own style of winemaking. The fruit comes from a vineyard that is flanking the Mendoza River in Argentina; a rocky terrain, strikingly similar to that of Chateauneuf du Pape in the Rhône Valley. The once 5 mile wide Mendoza River is now mostly vineyard, abundant with some of Argentina’s most pristine Malbec vines. A plethora of smooth cobble on the top bewilders the eye and imagination as to how the vines actually thrive in such a rugged terrain. Clay and gravel make up the subsoil under the larger cobble forcing each vine to compete for nutrition; the result is a wine profoundly concentrated and rich, “always rich”.The climate is quite similar to that of the Napa Valley. Warm days are followed by cool evenings as the maritime breezes make it through the Andes Mountain ranges down to Mendoza Valley floor. The grapes were harvested nearly a month to six weeks after all other neighboring vineyards; a crucial element to the wine’s quality. Each cluster was harvested, destemmed and sorted – all by hand. The wine was fermented in stainless steel (80%) and used Hundred Acre barrels (20%) exported to Argentina.

The wine has a dense, purple core with a brilliant red rim. Black fruit is abundant in the nose followed closely by anise, chocolate and very pleasant touches of spice. Pure, muscular, rich; a powerhouse of lush fruit, silky cocoa and cream. An intense mouthful of fruit-driven wine: layers of jam, cherries and espresso with a hint of tobacco. Layered and complex; a nose to linger over, a finish that never ends. A wine of substance worth the extra weight in a backpack en route to Patagonia; not for the faint of heart…
