slightly blacker fruit, a bit more depth and opulence, and a finish that seems endless. Give it 5-6 years of cellaring and enjoy it from 2016 to 2029+.

Achaval-Ferrer, under the direction of CEO Santiago Achaval and winemaker Roberto Cipresso, stands at the summit of Argentina wine producers. The benchmark Finca bottlings are limited (under 1000 cases produced of each) so the best way to discover the pleasures of Achaval-Ferrer are through the entry-level Malbec of which there are 12,000 cases. Achaval-Ferrer is about to launch a new cuvee called Tempous, a blend of the three single vineyards. There are only 75 cases (3 barrels) produced of each vintage, so fans of the winery, be prepared to go to war to get your hands on a few bottles. The wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts, aged for 18 months in new French oak, and bottled without fining or filtration."

out in a category crowded with good wines and it made our decision easy. Andeluna definitely has that core of sumptuous and silky fruit that is essential in a Malbec-long, richly textured, yet enlivened bybright acidity and lavish baking spices. The flavor profile is a pitch perfect balance between black fruit and red fruit (for "blackfruit" think flavors like blackberry, mulberry and currant; for "red fruit" think soft and pretty Pinot-like flavors of raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate). The Andeluna Malbec is bold and beautiful enough to make us fall in love again. Your teeth may be black after enjoying a bottle, but we're sure you'll be smiling.

tanks (50%) and oak (50%). It reveals some spicy oak notes along with a big, sweet kiss of blackberry and black raspberry fruit as well as hints of camphor and white flowers. The complex aromatics are followed by a medium to full-bodied, lush, opulent Malbec to enjoy over the next 4-5 years, perhaps longer. Drink: 2014 - 2019."

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "This dark, sappy red delivers rich, yet racy, flavors of blackberry coulis, plum skin and kirsch. Compact, with layered notes of cocoa nib, licorice and tar slowly unraveling in the long finish. Drink now through 2014. 1,300 cases imported."

Pedro Angulo and Angel Innocenti were winegrowers in their native Europe – Pedro in the Basque country and Angel in Tuscany. They immigrated to Argentina in the late 19th century and through hard work and perseverance found great success in their commercial activities.

Today the Angulo and Innocenti families have rekindled their immigrant winemaking roots. Alejandro Angulo and Mariano Innocenti, 3rd and 4th generation family members respectively, have decided to celebrate Pedro and Angel’s vintner past with the development of a unique terroir in La Consulta.

La Consulta is located in the very southern tip of the Uco Valley in the San Carlos county, some 75 miles to the south of the city of Mendoza. The district varies in altitude from 3,000 – 3,500 feet above sea level at the foot of the majestic Andes. Its high altitude and southerly location combine to offer warm sunny days with cool mountain nights. The warm sunny days lend a rich, concentration of black fruit flavors together with a soft, supple texture. The cool mountain nights contribute intense floral aromatics and racy acidity to the wines. Mariano and his uncle Alejandro chose La Consulta for its rich heritage and long tradition as Mendoza’s premier region for Malbec, dating back to the early 20th century.

and lavendar and a touch of leather, spice and vanilla flavors. The palate is full and rich with soft and sweet tannins and a silky, smooth structure. Multiple layers of rich cassis, black currant and blackberries are interwoven with hints of licorice and black pepper. INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR 92 POINTS - " "Bright ruby-red. Superripe aromas of blackberry, black cherry and spicecake show an almost porty quality. Rich, sweet, layered and deep; extremely dense but not at all edgy or dry. With its kirsch-like porty ripeness, this boasts compelling sweetness. Can't quite match the Catena Alta cabernet for sheer structure but the finish is broad and long, with classy tannins."

We were wowed by El Enemigo. This is a bold and powerful Malbec blend from Argentina, made in collaboration with Alejandro Vigil, head winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata and Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicholas Catena, who is continuing in her family’s legacy of winemaking. The 2008 El Enemigo is a blend of 93% Malbec and 7% Petit Verdot sourced from vineyards in the Uco Valley of Mendoza. This is a voluptuous, full-bodied wine with a color such a deep purple, it paints the glass. Wafting up are aromas of blackberries, red licorice and brandied cherries, followed by more blackberry, clove, black pepper and cola on the palate. The finish is long with gentle, soft tannins.

Mendoza has an extraordinary 450 years of winemaking history; however, only in the last 10 years has the Uco Valley emerged as one of the world's most exciting wine producing regions. Situated in the foothills of the Andes at 1200 meters above sea level, the pristine environment in the Uco Valley yields elegant wines with unrivaled purity. The nose on this 2012 bottling has attractive elements of spice, cured meats, dark cassis and boysenberry fruits and a layer of floral perfume. The palate is similarly diverse and interesting with excellent dark fruits, plum and mixed berries, spice, charred earth and graphite minerality with a finishing flourish of blueberry, cassis and a hint of cola berry. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity course throughout, uplifiting and invigorating the wine. Great wine, excellent value. Only 2,700 cases produced; 600 cases designated for USA.

be recreated or replicated. Every Layer Cake wine is a rich, lush expression that truly reflects the place, the land and their own style of winemaking. The fruit comes from a vineyard that is flanking the Mendoza River in Argentina; a rocky terrain, strikingly similar to that of Chateauneuf du Pape in the Rhône Valley. The once 5 mile wide Mendoza River is now mostly vineyard, abundant with some of Argentina’s most pristine Malbec vines. A plethora of smooth cobble on the top bewilders the eye and imagination as to how the vines actually thrive in such a rugged terrain. Clay and gravel make up the subsoil under the larger cobble forcing each vine to compete for nutrition; the result is a wine profoundly concentrated and rich, “always rich”.The climate is quite similar to that of the Napa Valley. Warm days are followed by cool evenings as the maritime breezes make it through the Andes Mountain ranges down to Mendoza Valley floor. The grapes were harvested nearly a month to six weeks after all other neighboring vineyards; a crucial element to the wine’s quality. Each cluster was harvested, destemmed and sorted – all by hand. The wine was fermented in stainless steel (80%) and used Hundred Acre barrels (20%) exported to Argentina.

The wine has a dense, purple core with a brilliant red rim. Black fruit is abundant in the nose followed closely by anise, chocolate and very pleasant touches of spice. Pure, muscular, rich; a powerhouse of lush fruit, silky cocoa and cream. An intense mouthful of fruit-driven wine: layers of jam, cherries and espresso with a hint of tobacco. Layered and complex; a nose to linger over, a finish that never ends. A wine of substance worth the extra weight in a backpack en route to Patagonia; not for the faint of heart…

an average age of 46 years. It is aged for 16 months in French oak (60% new). It has a floral bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry, rhubarb and a touch of Hoi Sin that is well-defined. It is very well-balanced and harmonious, with light strawberry, balsamic and pomegranate notes on the minerally finish. This is a superb Malbec."

INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR 91 POINTS - "Full bright ruby. Sexy aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, cassis and violet, plus a hint of caramel oak. Dense, creamy and concentrated; in a sweet style but nicely integrated acidity gives it balance. Finishes with tooth-saturating tannins, a hint of torrefaction and sneaky length. I'd drink this one before the Beso de Dante owing to its early sweetness."
