MOSER 2011 MULLER THURGAU

Müller Thurgau is a hybrid grape that was created by Swiss oenologist Hermann Müller from the town of Thurgau. It was born from the crossing of the Riesling and Chasselas grapes in an attempt to create a varietal that would do well at very high altitude. Moser winery is owned and operated by the Moser family the patriarch of which is Francesco Moser. Francesco Moser is one of Europe’s most celebrated cyclists and a national Italian hero. He is perhaps most famous for setting the 1 hour distance record of 51km, 151m on January 23, 1984. This feat will stand as one of the most incredible accomplishments in the history cycling and the revolutionary bike design he used to achieve this record changed the course modern cycling design forever. The Francesco Moser Müller Thurgau 2011 is perhaps the best example of the wonderful results this grape can produce in the hands of a family with a century of experience in high altitude grape farming. Produced from 20 year old vines at an altitude of 650m above sea level, the wine is incredible on the nose with notes of elderflower, spring breeze, mountain air and lychee all engaging together with softer tones of yellow delicious apple and light cedar. A hint of spice as well ties the nose to the palate with a wash of fresh citrus, lime peel, and pear giving way to more savory mineral and wet stone. Focused and broad, these layers of flavor mingle over the mid-palate through the finish with balanced highlights of jasmine and lively acidity that bring this vivacious and vibrant wine to an incredible crescendo. Viva Moser!
