Winemaker Notes - “This 2009 vintage is an elegant expression of Canoe Ridge Estate Merlot offering dark cherry fruit character. We added Syrah and Malbec to the blend for enhanced complexity. This is a great food wine and its dusty tannins make it a perfect match with Italian food.”
The vineyard at Canoe Ridge Estate lies on a steep south-facing wind-swept slope on the bank of the Columbia River in Washington's Horse Heaven Hills AVA. The site's proximity to the river protects it from temperature extremes, allowing uniform ripening and excellent color development. Soils are sandy with bits of cobblestone and have low water-holding capacity, enabling precise control of vine growth through drip irrigation and canopy management. The site typically enjoys an early bud break and a long growing season.

and added structure. The fruit was handpicked and carefully sorted. Fermentation was intentionally fast and warm, with a total of 6 days on the skins. The wine was pressed for good color extraction while minimizing fruit bitterness. We aged it in both French and American oak barrels for about 18 months, with 32% of the barrels being new."

A focused entry leads to a round, fleshy mid-palate with moderate acidity. The wine displays great richness, while not being heavy. located at the mouth of Dutch Henry Canyon. Robert Foley continues to lead the winemaking and in typical Foley fashion, this Merlot is huge! While maintaining the juicy fruit profile you would expect from a Merlot, this wine also has beefy complexity and chewy tannins making it an ideal Merlot for the Cabernet drinker or for those who simply feel Merlot is a wimpy wine. Aromas of pure, clean, ripe fruit reminiscent of blackberry and black currant fill the glass when swirled. The mid palate floods these flavors expansively with traces of supple tannins. Satin smooth in the finish, the black fruit flavors linger on and on. Blind pour this for your friends who claim to dislike Merlot!!!
