James Maynard Keenan (of Tool fame) also has his hand in the Merkin Vineyards and Winery. The Shinola red is a blend of traditional Italian varietals'
25% Sangiovese, 25% Refosco, 25% Primitivo, and 25% Dolcetto from Luna Rosa Vineyard in New Mexico. Ruby in Color, an array of red fruits with a dusty, oakey back drop hits the nose right away. The red fruits play delicately with the fine grained tannins, sweet spice and rich leather.
