It seems like the parade of new artisanal French Champagne producers will never cease. Which, of course, is a good thing. On the other hand, there are surprisingly few boutique California wineries trying their hand with sparkling wines. That is one of reasons we are so fired up about this hand-crafted sparkler from Mary Elke. The other reason is that this beauty offers a depth and overall quality that is rare at this modest price. The hallmark of this bubbly is its compelling, purely rendered fruit (60% Chardonnay/40% Pinot Noir), most of which is drawn from the Elke familyís highly regarded Donnelly Creek Vineyard in Anderson Valley. Winemaker Matt Evans uses a hand-cranked basket press and other equipment and practices that would be familiar to winemakers from hundreds of years ago. Evansí traditional wine- making techniques along with a minimal regime of yeast aging (just seven months) work in concert to bolster this Brutís fruit profile. The result is a lip-smacking, California-styled bubbly that offers pristine pear, apple and guava flavors under-scored with beams of citrus and just a whisper of yeast. A novel call for Holiday parties when you want to impress for less.
