This is followed by a full-bodied, structured wine with good balance, depth, and length. It should evolve for another 3-4 years and drink well through 2020. These wines demonstrate the potential of La Mancha, a large region known in the past primarily for bulk wines, but now increasingly the focus of top vignerons such as Alejandro Fernandez of Pesquera fame.

addition to having a proven track record of consistent quality, the wines have to be both produced from single estate-grown vineyards and also have to be processed and aged in the winery (bodega) located on the estate. This DO de Pago is located in the municipality of Malagón, in the province of Ciudad Real (Castile-La Mancha, Spain) and acquired its status on 20 August 2009.

The ‘09 is 100% Tempranillo and ready for summer grillin’! One of the things we love about Tempranillo is its versatility-- from soft and delicate to boisterous and big, and all points in between, Tempranillo can fill just about any role you throw at it. For this one, we’re thinking summer barbecues with lots of friends and family around. The nose is salivatingly good (Pavlovian, to say the least); the salty, earthy smell of Jamón Ibérico leads, while a smattering of fresh berries (elderberries, blueberries, raspberries) follows closely behind, bolstered by deft streaks of autumn spices, nutmeg, pepper and a hint of mint. The palate starts with sweet fruit while ample tannins immediately make their presence felt. A mélange of flavors lovingly assaults the palate: sassafras, sassafras tea, earthy spice, salted plum, cherry, licorice, smoke. And, like a good chorale of trained voices, each seems to know how to blend with each; the flavors and scents merge harmoniously to make a beautiful, easy-to-drink, balanced wine.

planted on such rocky and austere soils don’t produce much. Low yields are essential for concentrated, flavorful wines, but La Mancha’s recent history has mostly been about inexpensive, easy drinking wines. With these great raw materials in the vineyard, Importer Jorge Ordonez knew that La Mancha could do much better. Rather than finding an existing winery to import, Jorge found the right vineyards in the Northwest of La Mancha and hired his own winemaker.

WINERY NOTES- "This single vineyard-designated wine has plenty of red cherries, blueberries, mulberries and red raisins, depicting grapes pushed to full ripeness without going beyond the boundary into excessive over ripeness. The oak character is relatively elegant with toasty, coffee hints only, and the balanced wine shows some lingering length as well. Drink now or in the next five or so years."
