LUIS CANAS 2009 CRIANZA

WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "The 2009 Crianza, a blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Garnacha aged for 12 months in French and American oak, sports a very polished bouquet with dark cherries, sloes and fresh fig. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good acidity and impressive structure towards the finish that has a convincing sense of symmetry and focus. This is a very natural, sophisticated Crianza meriting aging. Drink 2014-2020.

Bodegas Luis Canas owns 90 hectares of vine. This is augmented by 200 hectares under long-term contract, dispersed over 815 parcels. These wines were imbued with wonderful purity and sophistication, managing to tread that fine line between modernism and classicism and embracing the virtues from the two. Moreover, I found that these wines evoked a sense of place, something that not all Rioja wines do. These all comes highly recommended."

Luis Canas wines are not news in Spain, but they only cracked the market in the U.S. 3-4 years ago. We're big fans. The Gran Riserva Rioja was part of our Tempranillo cover last year and the beautiful "Seleccion de la Familia" Reserva is a staple in the Rioja section when it's available. The newly arrived 2009 Crianza is stellar--showing brightness, depth, and purity. The 92 point review from the Wine Advocate will tell you all you need to know about Canas. The notes about balance between a "modern style" and "tradition" are right on.
