LUIS CANAS 2006 RESERVA SELECCION DE LA FAMILIA

Decanter Magazine recently awarded the 2006 “Seleccion de la Familia” ***** and the Regional Trophy for the Best Rioja Reserva of 2013. - The wines of Luis Cañas were a new discovery for us a couple years ago, but since then great new releases keep arriving and wowing us. Neal Martin from The Wine Advocate recently reviewed a series of Cañas wine. In describing the estate’s style he noted, “These wines were imbued with wonderful purity and sophistication, managing to tread that fine line between modernism and classicism and embracing the virtues from the two. Moreover, I found that these wines evoked a sense of place, something that not all Rioja wines do. These all comes highly recommended.” The open secret here is Cañas insistence of growing only within the Rioja Alavesa zone—it is the smallest, highest, and most fractious subregion of Rioja (Canas’ 300 acres are spread across 815 sub-parcels). Rarely bottled without blending from other areas, the best of Alavesa’s wines showing more brightness and focused red fruit like fresh, crushed pomegranate and red cherry. The limestone of these slopes seems to brighten, tighten, and intensify the style. And yet, these are not austere or difficult “terroir” wines. The Cañas wines are wines of pleasure with deep fruit and rich, modern oak.

#8 WINE ENTHUSIAST TOP 100, 94 POINTS - "Black fruit aromas come with all the savory, smoky, coconutty accents one could ask for. In the mouth, expect saturation, big tannins, structure galore and layering. Flavors of balsamic black fruits, prune, toast and char finish long, minty, dark and delicious. Residual tannins suggest that this can last another 10 years."
