The winery is located in the Valle de La Aragona, inside the Murcia district of Jumilla. The vineyards are 64 acres of old Monastrell vines, oriented northeast and all vaso or gobelet trained, and 45 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon planted 25 years ago on smooth hills looking north. For the last four to five years the “Clío” has been one of the most in-demand Spanish wines at Hi-Time. It combines the lush, velvety tannins of Jumilla’s famed Monastrell (aka Mourvedre) with the pedigree of some rare old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon. Many of you know the wine-- we’re just reminding you it’s here. As far as a track record goes, Clío has scored in the mid-90s and up (94-97 points from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate) in six vintages since 2003-- we believe the 2011 edition is right up there with those vaunted, earlier vintages. 70% Monastrell, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon Colored dark cherry red, the nose is intense with dark, ripe fruits (cassis and currant) and comfit mixed with sensations of toasted coffee and licorice which lend a sense of finesse and elegance. In the palate there is ample evidence of strength with uplifting acidity and forward tannins, fleshy dark fruits, savory spice, a touch of earth and flat-out opulence. These characteristics combine harmoniously in the palate to make for another stunning wine from Bodegas El Nido.

long history of grape growing and wine production, which was probably introduced by the ancient Romans. The 'Golden Age of Alicante' wines was during the 16th and 17th centuries, when they were imported to northern Europe by English, Swedish and Flemish merchants. While this 'Golden Age' may have been long ago, the wines produced from this area are still fantastic and can be some of the best-priced, 'top value' wines we see and taste.

The grape used in this wine is 100% Monastrell with the age of the vines ranging from 25-35 years old. The soil is very chalky and are at an elevation of some 2,100 feet above sea level. The winery owns (80 hectares) 192 acres of vineyards, some of which are certified organic.
