JORDANOV 2011 MERLOT, MACEDONIA

The Republic of Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 and joined the United Nations in 1993. There was some conflict with Greece over the use of the name Macedonia as that is also the name of a region there. Indeed, roughly half of the ancient historical region of Macedonia is in Greece and half in the Republic. The famous historical conqueror Alexander the Great was from Macedonia. History and politics aside, wine has been made in Macedonia for thousands of years. This 2011 Merlot from the Tikves appellation displays ripe berry fruit and an exotic streak of baking spices like clove, nutmeg and cardamom on the nose. In the mouth it is full bodied with ripe dark fruit and hints of herbs with a noticeable dark chocolate edge on the well-structured finish. Enjoy with cheese, beef or lamb dishes or grilled sausages.
