JONATA 2011 SAUVIGNON BLANC "LA FLOR DE JONATA" SANTA YNEZ VALLEY 750mL

When we were at the winery tasting through the entire lineup of wines with winemaker Matt Dees, this wine truly was a shining star! We would put ourselves on the line as saying this is one of the best Sauvignon Blancs made in California; on par with Peter Michael, Spottswoode and Araujo. This wine reaches new heights of balance, charm, power and subtlety. The vines gain an extra year of maturity and grow deeper roots and the wines seem to respond directly and gain a new level of depth of their own. The nose is pure Flor with pungent notes of orange zest, lemon blossom, sweet custard and dried chamomile. Sémillon adds an extra dimension of poignancy on the palate. The dance between the fat of Sémillon and the zing of Sauvignon Blanc is fine-tuned in this offering. Higher acidity than the previous offering (á la the brilliant and cool conditions of 2011) adds a level of precision to the long finish.

The Hilt champions Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Santa Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley. The philosophy of “growing in the margins” propels winegrowers to employ practices that enable grapes to show full transparency of site—key to The Hilt’s philosophy. Within this framework, The Hilt ferments two different camps of wine—Old Guard and Vanguard. The former relies on older vine selection and cellar methods that offer a nod to the Old World, with acid and structure at the fore. The latter expression is a testimony to the full textural elements so common in New World sites. As hinted at in the name, The Hilt goes “all the way” in its quest for expression and quality; nothing is held back in terms of effort.
