licorice and cola. Rosso di Montalcino is one of Italy's most food-friendly wines (think pasta, grilled sausage and lasagna) and this wine is a good example of why. Fresh acidity and easy tannins offer a smooth and informal drinking experience.

Rosso’s from Montalcino are, in essence, “baby” Brunello. If you’ve always been enamored with wine from Montalcino, Uccelliera has to be one of the benchmarks. The wine is 100% Sangiovese, but we’re talking about a different clone than what is used in Chianti. Here we get a wine that has more of everything and by that I mean breadth and amplification when compared to Chianti Classico (which is why Chianti producers make a Riserva). With Uccelliera’s it’s an unadulterated love affair. It’s fresh, rich, and powerful, but being a Rosso di Montalcino, just plain easy to drink!

Andrea Bosco, along with his father (Agostino) and mother (Carla), represent the quintessential family run and operated Piemontese winery. Long recognized by European critics, especially Decantur, as a “rising star”, Andrea’s wine making skills continue to reach new heights and new accolades here in the US.

La Serra is located in the heart of the bowl that lies below the town of La Morra and like most wines of La Morra is known for producing lighter styles of Barolo. However, though one would not confuse Andrea’s wines with the powerful, tannic monsters of, say, Serra Lunga, they are not as light in style as many other wines produced from La Serra. Part of this might be attributable to fact that his vineyard encompasses the first rows above the more powerful cru of “Brunate.” So while the label reads “La Serra”, there is definitely a presence of “Brunate” in the wines.

In the past, Andrea has experimented using new small oak barrels not because he was interested in “chasing points” or creating a style of wine for a particular palate, but because he was interested in producing the best wine possible from his land. Beginning with the 2008 vintage, he, shall we say, “got it right.” The wines no longer see any aging in small barrels, instead they spend 24 months in large, neutral oak barrels of 1,200 liters (Botte Grande). You won’t find any oak on the nose or on the palate – just pure, unadulterated nebbiolo aromas of dried strawberries, white roses and tar.

We are excited to be able to offer our Barolo lovers access to the exquisite wines of Aldo Conterno on a pre-sale basis. This wine is excepted to arrive in October of 2014.

The Conterno family has been making wine since the 1700’s and Aldo Conterno is regarded as one of the greatest producers of Piedmont. As a young man, Aldo worked with his brother, Giovanni before striking out on his own in 1969. He developed a reputation as an innovator with a focus on quality and attention to detail and passed this dynamism on to his three sons who now run the business.

Aldo’s small property on the hill of Bussia in Monforte D’Alba has grown into a marvelous 25 hectare estate. The Aldo Conterno Barolo’s are intense and concentrated examples of perfectly ripened Nebbiolo grapes from superior terroirs, grown at a gentle altitude that allows for optimum finesse. The three top ‘Crus’ on the famed Bussia slope produce the three flagship Barolos of the estate.

ALL the wines in the line-up are wonderful examples of quality Barolo made in an excellent vintage. In fact, 2010 is widely regarded as perhaps the greatest vintage in Piedmont in two decades! The wines have plenty of structure, will benefit from cellaring and are highly collectible. Although relatively young at this point, the balance, concentration and length offer a preview of even greater things to come for those who are patient.

Palazzo Della Torre is a “Cru” wine coming from a single vineyard and is known as their “Baby Amarone.” The blend of 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese takes two different paths. Thirty percent of the grapes are left to dry on racks till December, in true Amarone style, and the other seventy percent vinified immediately.
