was a red wine made during the Winter months with wilted grapes; it was very difficult to get, at least in large quantities and was produced in the hills around Verona. It is remarkable that after so many centuries this wine is still produced with the same technique and the same care.

Colour very intense purple red. Bouquet typical of dried fruit with scent of violet. Flavours are slightly sweet with; the balance between tannin, sugar and acidity exalts the scent of dried fruit which persists long in the palate.

This dessert wine is particularly suited for cakes and pies: "pasta frolla", "Sbrisolona" (typical of Valpolicella), Cantucci, bitter chocolate; in Verona it is traditionally served with "Pandoro"

leather and savory herbs mesh together in the glass. A wine of unusual detail for the year, the 2008 stands apart for its delineation and textural finesse. Naturally, the 2008 can’t match the 2006 or 2007, but it is a great choice for drinking while those wines age. Layers of flavor wrap around the palate on the striking finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.

Andrea Bosco, along with his father (Agostino) and mother (Carla), represent the quintessential family run and operated Piemontese winery. Long recognized by European critics, especially Decantur, as a “rising star”, Andrea’s wine making skills continue to reach new heights and new accolades here in the US.

La Serra is located in the heart of the bowl that lies below the town of La Morra and like most wines of La Morra is known for producing lighter styles of Barolo. However, though one would not confuse Andrea’s wines with the powerful, tannic monsters of, say, Serra Lunga, they are not as light in style as many other wines produced from La Serra. Part of this might be attributable to fact that his vineyard encompasses the first rows above the more powerful cru of “Brunate.” So while the label reads “La Serra”, there is definitely a presence of “Brunate” in the wines.

In the past, Andrea has experimented using new small oak barrels not because he was interested in “chasing points” or creating a style of wine for a particular palate, but because he was interested in producing the best wine possible from his land. Beginning with the 2008 vintage, he, shall we say, “got it right.” The wines no longer see any aging in small barrels, instead they spend 24 months in large, neutral oak barrels of 1,200 liters (Botte Grande). You won’t find any oak on the nose or on the palate – just pure, unadulterated nebbiolo aromas of dried strawberries, white roses and tar.

Long recognized by European critics, especially Decantur, as a “rising star”, Andrea’s wine making skills continue to reach new heights and new accolades here in the US.

Andrea has two crus from which he produces two very traditional Barolos. The first is in Verduno, where like the wines of Brangero, one is immediately struck by the aromatics of the wine. The Cru, Neirane, lies just beyond La Morra and from the soil rich in Marne, it producers a super fine, super elegant wine. The second Cru needs little introduction – La Serra.

Aia Vecchia is the name of an old building which is today the centre of a company deep in the Tuscany countryside between Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci. This is an area where the particularly favorable microclimate and ideally suited soils make possible the production of very high quality wines. The particular position gives the vines very much light, both direct sunlight as sunlight reflected by the sea. This in general allows an early harvest.

The property consists of 69 hectares of open ground: 48 are vineyards, 30 of which are under the Bolgheri DOC. The planted varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are used to produce Lagone and Sor Ugo. The Morellino di Scansano is produced in the estate of Magliano in Toscana (Grosseto) which consists of 10 hectares planted with Sangiovese and Merlot grape varieties.

Both properties are owned by the Pellegrini family, grape growers in the area for several generations.

We are excited to be able to offer our Barolo lovers access to the exquisite wines of Aldo Conterno on a pre-sale basis. This wine is excepted to arrive in October of 2014

The Conterno family has been making wine since the 1700’s and Aldo Conterno is regarded as one of the greatest producers of Piedmont. As a young man, Aldo worked with his brother, Giovanni before striking out on his own in 1969. He developed a reputation as an innovator with a focus on quality and attention to detail and passed this dynamism on to his three sons who now run the business.

Aldo’s small property on the hill of Bussia in Monforte D’Alba has grown into a marvelous 25 hectare estate. The Aldo Conterno Barolo’s are intense and concentrated examples of perfectly ripened Nebbiolo grapes from superior terroirs, grown at a gentle altitude that allows for optimum finesse. The three top ‘Crus’ on the famed Bussia slope produce the three flagship Barolos of the estate.

ALL the wines in the line-up are wonderful examples of quality Barolo made in an excellent vintage. In fact, 2010 is widely regarded as perhaps the greatest vintage in Piedmont in two decades! The wines have plenty of structure, will benefit from cellaring and are highly collectible. Although relatively young at this point, the balance, concentration and length offer a preview of even greater things to come for those who are patient.
