HURE FRERES 06 BRUT BLANC E BLANCS "L'INATTENDUE"

In our neverending quest to uncover the undiscovered, we are pleased to offer for your consideration yet another micro-producer that over delivers for the money. As the names suggests, this Montagne de Reims firm is a collaboration of three brothers so the vineyards that supply the grapes for the cuvées have three owners instead of one- -as would be the case with a récoltant-manipulant. Raoul Huré and his two brothers set up the firm in Ludes the 1970s. His brothers have retired and Raoul is now assisted by his son François. Before joining his father, François apprenticed at a number of French and overseas wineries including Pegasus Bay and Gypsy Dancer in New Zealand. The pristine conditions that he encountered in New Zealand inspired him to clean up his family viticultural practices once he got back home. The Hurés have now farmed sustainably since 2000 and are presently experimenting with biodynamic cultivation. They also eschew the use of enzymes and fining agents, preferring to clarify with just a coarse filtration. We recently tasted three current bottlings and liked them all-- but our favorite for the money was their “L’Inattendue”. The name of the cuvée means “unexpected” and the moniker is quite apropos because one doesn’t expect to find a great Chardonnay Champagne emerging from the Montagne de Reims--an area where Pinot Noir reigns supreme. With the benefit of five years aging sur latte this 2006 opens with a wonderful aromatic depth and complexity displaying aromas of apple pastry and nougat along with floral notions of hawthorn and lemon blossom. While the mouth is revitalized by the active play of bubbles and acidity, the fruit (spiced apple and pear) carries an impressive richness from the heavier clay soils of the Montagne. A light dosage of 7g/l keeps everything poised and taut while the finish lingers with attractive impressions of wet stones and citrus. This is certainly one of the most delightful 2006s on the market and a great value that outshines many Grand Marques efforts we could mention.
