both dry and sweet wines. Harslevelu means "linden leaf" referring not to the shape of the leaf, but its subtle floral aromatics. Thin-skinned and late ripening, Harslevelu is delicately perfumed.

Bott's 2012 was sourced from 35-year-old vines grown in the Hatari vineyard. Perhaps because of limestone-rich soils, the grapes from this vineyard have good minerality and acidity. The wine was fermented and aged in neutral oak. This is a delightful white, both rich in flavor and elegantly dry. On the nose you find aromas of poached stone fruits, lemon zest and spice. In the mouth flavors of melon and honey are balanced by citrus notes and a hint of spice. Serve with cheese, pate, cold cuts, chicken or fish.

60 miles west of Tokaj. The grape is the indigenous Kekfrankos, and it's made by the winegrower Janos Stumpf in partnership with Canadian master sommelier John Szabo (who's of Hungarian ancestry).

Similar to Blaufrankish in Austria, Kekfrankos gives a minerally nuanced red with a generous perfume. The Eged-Hegy Dulo (Eged Hill Vineyard) is dry-farmed, and the vines are 40 years old. Production is small, and only a few wine shops carry it.

But what a wonderful find at less than $25. Its lively acidity and complexity make it a beautiful wine with food, especially roasted or braised lamb or beef, grilled sausages and chops. I drank it with braised lamb shanks and beans.

It is believed wine has been made on Crete for over 3,000 years. The Nostos 2010 Alexandra's red is made by the Manousakis Winery which is known in Europe but was new to us. We were very impressed by the quality of this medium to full-bodied red. Serve this with grilled sausages or beef or lamb dishes.

dry wines almost exclusively in Central Europe, especially Hungary." The 2011 from Royal Tokaji received a regional trophy from Decanter Magazine (London) and 90 points from the Wine Spectator: "Elegant and finely detailed, with a waft of smoke behind the white grapefruit and melon rind notes, lingering with traces of spice and chalk. Fine length." We tried this with smoked albacore and salmon (a perfect food pairing) and found a lively nose featuring apricot, citrus and minerals. The palate features rich flavors of white nectarine and honeydew melon with good minerality leading to a crisp, dry finish.

Think of this as a cross between Chablis and Chenin Blanc. It is a wine to be drunk with charcuterie, chili, dishes with warm spices or garlic cream sauces. This is the perfect foil to a good many dishes. What makes it so good is that it is delicious on its own, served chilled for sipping on a hot summer day. Delightful!
