HANZELL 2011 CHARDONNAY "AMBASSADOR'S 1953" SONOMA VALLEY 1.5L

Do you really think that white wines cannot age? Especially those from California? If so, then you couldn’t be more misinformed! The Hanzell Chardonnays have stood the test of time to show that they are capable of aging… for decades! In 1948, Ambassador James D. Zellerbach set out to create a small vineyard and winery dedicated to the best traditions of Grand Cru Burgundy: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of extraordinary quality and great longevity. He succeeded, and gave us one of the greatest legacies of winemaking in the New World! The deft hands of winemakers Bob Sessions and Lynda Hanson are able to display a purity of expression with minerality and honest varietal character.

The Ambassador's 1953 Chardonnay epitomizes everything that is great about this noble grape. It is the most complex, most age-worthy, Chardonnay produced at Hanzell, and it is not produced every year. Only when the vintage is outstanding, and the right barrels display unordinary and exemplary characteristics is the Ambassador's bottling produced.

Aromas of peach, hazelnut, toasted marshmallow and lemon meringue pie give an opulent initial impression. With time in the glass, notes of honeysuckle, graphite and nutmeg come forward. Broad and multi-layered flavors of apricot, Meyer lemon, caramel and baked pear are mouth-filling and lasting. Sleek acidity keeps the flavors lively and balances the richness keeping the wine buoyant. The overall structure, depth and intensity point towards a very long life with tremendous development in the next five to eight years. This wine, bottled en magnum will continue to age beautifully for many more years. Decanting three to four hours before serving is recommended while young.
