HAMILTON RUSSELL 12 CHARDONNAY

#19 WINE SPECTATOR TOP 100
WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS
- “Tightly wound, this exhibits a serious core of glazed pear, fig, apple, plantain and brioche notes, lined with mineral and honeysuckle hints and accented by nicely beaded acidity. This should be a beauty when it unwinds fully. Best from 2014 through 2020.”

Hamilton Russell Vineyards, one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea - is located in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The Estate specialises in producing highly individual, terroir-driven Pinot noir and Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the best in the New World. We tried this wine (again) in November, prepping for the December newsletter and were (again!) smitten: this is awesome Chardonnay. The nose is kaleidoscopic as pear and pineapple fruit flavors merge with undertones of almond and hazelnut nuttiness, mineral and honeysuckle notes. Such grace and finesse! The palate continues with more pear and pineapple, white peach fruit as nutty toffee and river water lead to light spice and a moderately long finish, kept aloft with apropos acidity. Burgundian finesse.
