This customer favorite has been one of our most asked for Spanish wines for years and always sells out quickly. The new vintage is fantastic and everything we’ve always loved about Read More...
Alto Moncayo. Big, full-bodied and loaded with ripe, opulent fruit. Surprisingly approachable upon release due to the smooth tannin structure, it is also capable of aging for many years due to the depth and concentration. This wine always garners high praise from critics with Robert Parker twice awarding perfect 100 point scores for Moncayo! The new release has not been rated yet, but based on our tasting, we believe they will continue to receive accolades from the wine press.

Alto Moncayo is a joint project between Jorge Ordoñez and renowned Australian winemaker, Chris Ringland. The old vine Grenache vines produce tiny yields of intense, flavorful fruit. The wine is subsequently aged in oak for approximately 1 ½ years, giving additional complexity and dding delicious notes of cocoa, vanilla and baking spice.

The Bodegas Alto Moncayo, along with its sister property El Nido in Jumilla, combines the talents of local growers and winemakers with Australia’s super-star winemaker, Chris Ringland. The partnership has the ability to cherry-pick the best parcels of old vine Garnacha from Borsao’s extensive holdings in the region, nearly 2,000 acres.

The Garnacha grape is one of the varieties that best expresses its terroir. Thus, the Garnacha of Alto Moncayo is different from the rest of the Campo de Borja Denominación de Origen (DO) area. This is due to the very strict selection made from the vineyards, the type of soil in which they are grown, the microclimate and the age of the vines. As these vines are very old, the strains are very well-balanced, with a very deep root system.

All of these factors, together with the location of the vineyards, between 500m and 800m in height, where the maturity is very slow, leads to wines of great fruitiness and minerality. In the mouth they are rich and fulsome, with pleasant, mature tannins and highly aromatic persistence.

The native Garnacha grapes of Alto Moncayo, together with the microclimate to which they are subjected, the type of soil, the orientation and rigorous handling combine to make the authentic native terroir, producing wines which are highly distinctive and unique in the world.

Alto Moncayo is a joint project between Jorge Ordoñez and renowned Australian winemaker, Chris Ringland. The old vine Grenache vines produce tiny yields of intense, flavorful fruit. Although Veraton is the entry level wine for Alto Moncayo, it is also full-bodied and generous and represents one of the world’s greatest Grenache values. It is packed with fruit flavor and definitely over-delivers for its price point.

In a recent issue, Wine Spectator stated, “California Grenache is capable of stardom. But there needs to be a lot more made so that the average consumer can buy it.” Well, here’s your star!

The Barrel 27 guys have long searched for that perfect vineyard for the Rhône Valley’s bedrock grape... Grenache. That search has ended and the result is the most seductive Rock and a Hard Place to date! The wine exhibits a dark ruby-black color with a compelling nose of pureed raspberry, black berry jam, crushed mint leaf, sweet Tellicherry black pepper and cocoa, followed by hints of Chinese 5 Spices, cranberry, prosciutto, warm tar, lychee and rhubarb pie. In the mouth, the wine's purity shines out with flavors of dried raspberry and cranberry, mint, sage, cured meat and fresh herbs, with elements of wood smoke, nori, citrus and smoky paprika. Superb acidity balances the excellent tannin structure and the wine's generous body, yielding a long, pure finish of fruit and spice.

Colorful name notwithstanding, Bitch clearly made a mark with people last year primarily because it is delicious wine. The fact that it has an easy-to-remember name is seconday (Read More...
while being able to tie it in with an old Elton John song gets it the tertiary bronze). One chief difference over last year's model is that the '09 is from Spain instead of Australia. Winemaker Chris Ringland: I blended Bitch Grenache Aragon 2009 from a selection of un-oaked Grenache wines from various sub-regions of Aragon and Navarra, around the Southern regions of the Ebro river valley. He further states that this area in Spain is similar in climate to Southern Australia and California's Central Coast, with a variety of soil types, making it a good area for Grenache to survive (without the need for irrigation) and thrive.Notes: Dark cherry and raspberry aromas are underpinned with spicy, peppery notes with hints of anise. Aragon Grenache displays good and very balanced acidity which is countered by vibrant, juicy fruit (more delicious berries of all shades of red) and a soft, sweet-fruit palate.
WINE MAKER NOTES - I blended Bitch Grenache Aragon 2009 from a selection of un-oaked Grenache wines from various sub-regions of Aragon and Navarra, around the Southern regions of the Ebro river valley. The climate is typical of inland Northern Spain; continental with very cold winters and hot, dry summers. Although rainfall varies considerably, depending on altitude, the annual average rainfall in Zaragoza, the regional capital of Aragon, is around 360mm or 14, which is very low and comparable with the dry, inland viticultural climates of Southern Australia and the central valley of California. Soils vary considerably as well. They are typically alluvial, but zones of rich red-brown loams and white limestone are intermixed with very rocky slate at higher altitudes. Grenache (Garnacha) survives here without the need for irrigation. Yields are typically low and this, combined with a historical selection of small-berried, deeply colored clones, produces wines of a more masculine expression of the variety. Dark cherry and raspberry aromas are underpinned with spicy, peppery notes with hints of anise. Aragon Grenache displays extraordinary natural acid balance, even at elevated ripeness levels. I have selected wines, which convey vibrant, juicy fruit together with a very soft, sweet-fruited palate structure. The key here, as I have found elsewhere with my winemaking experiences, is very gentle handling during the primary fermentation, with a big emphasis on very soft pressing of the fermented grape skins. While Aragon Grenache can take surprisingly well to quite lavish new oak during maturation, the style for Bitch Grenache is all about fruit aromas and flavors. Maturation without oak influence enhances the natural fruit expression of these selections. 2009 vintage in Northern Spain saw a continuation of warm, dry summers, with very little rainfall during the vintage months. Clean, slowly ripened grapes retained impeccable fruit and acid balance at harvest time. Bitch Aragon Grenache is very approachable now, but don't be deceived into thinking that it won't age. I predict that the wine will develop further personality with 3 to 5 years in the cellar.

sweet and broad on the palate, offering fleshy blueberry and floral pastille flavors that turn spicier with air. Closes on a sweet note of spicy oak, with supple tannins, very good tenacity and a touch of fruitcake."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - " The 2013 Tres Picos is the bodegas top cuvée of 100% Grenache from older, head-pruned vines planted on the hillsides of the Moncayo Mountains. Yields were less than two tons of fruit per acre. This was the first of the Grenaches to spend some time in a combination of older French oak barrels (for 10 months) as well as stainless steel. There are 6,000 cases of this outstanding wine. Its dense ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by notes of kirsch liqueur, licorice, pepper and spice box, and a medium to full-bodied, richly fruity, sensual wine with beautiful finesse, complexity and purity. Sometimes Grenache can take on a complex, Pinot Noir-like sensitivity, and this cuvée appears to have done that. Consumers should take advantage of these lovely wines offered at ridiculously low prices."

less than one ton of fruit per acre. Fermented in stainless steel tanks and then transferred to new to 3-year-old French oak casks for 21 months, this outstanding red is the poor man's Priorat. Mineral notes of wet slate and gun flint are intermixed with blackcurrant, black cherry and cassis fruit in this dense, full-bodied, pure, lavishly rich, intense Spanish red. It is hard to believe what one can get at this price point if the importer and wine producer are committed to high quality."

Jorge Ordonez, the mastermind behind many of the world’s finest Spanish wines, purchased these vineyards in 2005. The property consists of old vines planted on rugged hillsides up to 3000 feet (the highest growing region for Garnacha grapes in Spain). The climate during the growing season is arid and blistering hot with cooling nights as a relief. The winter is very cold and never seems to end. Can grapes actually survive these conditions? Yes, but it’s probably not the best place for a vacation home! Those twisting and gnarly ancient head-pruned vines produce miniscule yields and incredible fruit concentration!

Already reasonably approachable, enjoy it over the coming decade."

WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS: "A pure, ripe core of kirsch and cherry paste is backed by notes of violet, pastis and bergamot. Singed mesquite details lend a fine-grained feel to the finish, while lavender and iron accents stay well-buried. Best from 2015 through 2027. 1,166 cases made." –JM

After years of studying wine abroad in Italy and working on becoming a Certified Sommelier, he realized that he wanted to make great wine, not just taste and recommend it to customers. The gods must have been smiling upon him because he got a job at one of the most sought-after wineries in Paso Robles...Booker! From picking the grapes to learning the creative techniques of blending and barrel selection and to the final step of bottling, Orion came to love the art of making wine. He soon became an assistant winemaker to Eric Jensen, the owner of the Booker Winery and Vineyard. In 2011, he decided it was time to take the plunge and make his own wine and started his own label, Dilecta, which means “lovely” or “loved” in Latin.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "Another up-and-comer in Paso Robles is Dilecta’s Orion Stang. A trained sommelier, Orion was the assistant winemaker for Eric Jensen at Booker Vineyards before creating his own label in 2011. I’m not sure where he gets his fruit, but both his 2011s (reviewed last year) and 2012s are outstanding. This is an estate to keep on your radar."

"A co-fermented blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Syrah, the 2012 The Tiller offers exotic notes of passion fruits, dried spices, sour cherries and spice in a medium to full-bodied, rounded, sweetly fruited and mouth-filling package. It will drink nicely for 4-5 years."

Jordan gives respect to to Rose, as it can be perfectly balanced and complex. Her rendition is a blend of 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 11 Mourvèdre, and 4% Viognier. Epoch’s Rose was made through a variety of ways: whole cluster pressing, destemmed berry pressing (with and without skin contact), and finally a small portion of saignee from one of our Grenache tanks. Intentionally unpretentious, this Rose is the alter ego of the Rhône grapes, seemingly a white wine despite being made from only red grapes. Made in a true provençal style, from red grapes gently pressed and handled like white grapes, Epoch’s Rosé is as sophisticated as you want it to be: white linen jacket or your grubby t-shirt.
