The partnership has the ability to cherry-pick the best parcels of old vine Garnacha from Borsao’s extensive holdings in the region, nearly 2,000 acres. “Veraton” is a hedonistic wine. Look for a nose of incredible intensity showing Asian five spice powder, ginger, boysenberry, cedar and toasty oak. The palate fills out with luscious fruit that can only be described as a “bowl full of black cherries.” The exotic spiciness of the nose also follows through on the palate with hints of cardamom, cinnamon and brown sugar. There is a thread of acidity enlivening it all thanks to the high-altitude of Moncayo's range. Don’t wait for the score on this one.

hillside above the village of Batea, where grapes have been grown since the 15th century. This offering, from very old vines and aged completely in concrete, is a naked, unadulterated, unmanipulated effort with great minerality (from the chalky, limestone soils) and an intensity and richness (from the old vines) that are normally found in $50+ wines. As I told Eric Solomon, at these ridiculously low prices, consumers will never suspect the wines are at this level of quality. This outstanding 2011 offers loads of kirsch, raspberry, licorice, garrigue and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied and dense, it is best consumed over the next 2-3 years. A killer value, it is a custom cuvee made for Eric Solomon by proprietor Nuria Altes."

Famed importer Eric Solomon’s mantra has long been “place over process”. If there ever was a wine that embodied this slogan it this Garnatxa (i.e. Gernache) from Catalonia’s still obscure Terra Alta region. As its name implies, this is a highland region (elevation is approximately 1300 feet) that is tucked away in the extreme south of Catalonia. It borders Aragon and Valencia and possesses precious plots of old bush-trained Grenache vines. The soils are excellent for fine wine production with plenty of limestone and good drainage. Really, the region has all the right elements of climate, soil, and vine material to make world class wines that, in time, should rival those of nearby Priorat. What Terra Alta lacks are more producers like Nuria Altes with the vision and passion to fully maximize the vast potential of the area. For many generations Nuria Altes' family has cultivated vines around the Terra Alta village of Batea. The Altes Herencia project was conceived to fulfill her dream to put Terra Alta on the map and showcase her family’s viticultural herencia (heritage). For this Grenache she has succeeded in spectacular fashion in capturing the electric fruit purity and mineral essence of this special place without the use of oak or high tech winemaking tricks.

of 100% free run juice...NO PRESSED JUICE! Very few producers employ this practice as it increases overall costs dramatically. But Paul feels that this gets him the best possible wine he can put in the bottle, and considering the price, it kind of makes you wonder why others charge more, yet their quality isn't as high???

This is 95% Grenache from the Uriel J. Nielson Vineyard, and 5% Syrah from the Minetti Vineyard. Paul utilized whole cluster fermentation on 25% of the grapes, and aged the wine for 32 months in 100% new French oak barrels. The Law of Return bears the hallmarks of Paul's obsessive attention to detail and fruit potential. Pouring a dark royal purple, the wine reveals unreal density without sacrificing vibrancy and nuance. Oh, by the way...only 83 bottles were produced!

The Barrel 27 guys have long searched for that perfect vineyard for the Rhône Valley’s bedrock grape... Grenache. That search has ended and the result is the most seductive Rock and a Hard Place to date! The wine exhibits a dark ruby-black color with a compelling nose of pureed raspberry, black berry jam, crushed mint leaf, sweet Tellicherry black pepper and cocoa, followed by hints of Chinese 5 Spices, cranberry, prosciutto, warm tar, lychee and rhubarb pie. In the mouth, the wine's purity shines out with flavors of dried raspberry and cranberry, mint, sage, cured meat and fresh herbs, with elements of wood smoke, nori, citrus and smoky paprika. Superb acidity balances the excellent tannin structure and the wine's generous body, yielding a long, pure finish of fruit and spice.

while being able to tie it in with an old Elton John song gets it the tertiary bronze). One chief difference over last year's model is that the '09 is from Spain instead of Australia. Winemaker Chris Ringland: I blended Bitch Grenache Aragon 2009 from a selection of un-oaked Grenache wines from various sub-regions of Aragon and Navarra, around the Southern regions of the Ebro river valley. He further states that this area in Spain is similar in climate to Southern Australia and California's Central Coast, with a variety of soil types, making it a good area for Grenache to survive (without the need for irrigation) and thrive.Notes: Dark cherry and raspberry aromas are underpinned with spicy, peppery notes with hints of anise. Aragon Grenache displays good and very balanced acidity which is countered by vibrant, juicy fruit (more delicious berries of all shades of red) and a soft, sweet-fruit palate.
WINE MAKER NOTES - I blended Bitch Grenache Aragon 2009 from a selection of un-oaked Grenache wines from various sub-regions of Aragon and Navarra, around the Southern regions of the Ebro river valley. The climate is typical of inland Northern Spain; continental with very cold winters and hot, dry summers. Although rainfall varies considerably, depending on altitude, the annual average rainfall in Zaragoza, the regional capital of Aragon, is around 360mm or 14, which is very low and comparable with the dry, inland viticultural climates of Southern Australia and the central valley of California. Soils vary considerably as well. They are typically alluvial, but zones of rich red-brown loams and white limestone are intermixed with very rocky slate at higher altitudes. Grenache (Garnacha) survives here without the need for irrigation. Yields are typically low and this, combined with a historical selection of small-berried, deeply colored clones, produces wines of a more masculine expression of the variety. Dark cherry and raspberry aromas are underpinned with spicy, peppery notes with hints of anise. Aragon Grenache displays extraordinary natural acid balance, even at elevated ripeness levels. I have selected wines, which convey vibrant, juicy fruit together with a very soft, sweet-fruited palate structure. The key here, as I have found elsewhere with my winemaking experiences, is very gentle handling during the primary fermentation, with a big emphasis on very soft pressing of the fermented grape skins. While Aragon Grenache can take surprisingly well to quite lavish new oak during maturation, the style for Bitch Grenache is all about fruit aromas and flavors. Maturation without oak influence enhances the natural fruit expression of these selections. 2009 vintage in Northern Spain saw a continuation of warm, dry summers, with very little rainfall during the vintage months. Clean, slowly ripened grapes retained impeccable fruit and acid balance at harvest time. Bitch Aragon Grenache is very approachable now, but don't be deceived into thinking that it won't age. I predict that the wine will develop further personality with 3 to 5 years in the cellar.

and quality of this wine go way above and beyond the entry fee. The nose is a gorgeous melding of earth, minerality, root beer and sassafras notes, red plum and sweet cherry fruit and a good measure of smoky charcuterie. The lush, viscous palate is balanced by appropriate tannins. The fruit is forward and ripe as black cherries and ripe plum take the spotlight with a supporting cast of light spice and minerality lending their voices to the chorus.
