The Bodegas Alto Moncayo, along with its sister property El Nido in Jumilla, combines the talents of local growers and winemakers with Australia’s super-star winemaker, Chris Ringland. Read More...
The partnership has the ability to cherry-pick the best parcels of old vine Garnacha from Borsao’s extensive holdings in the region, nearly 2,000 acres. “Veraton” is a hedonistic wine. Look for a nose of incredible intensity showing Asian five spice powder, ginger, boysenberry, cedar and toasty oak. The palate fills out with luscious fruit that can only be described as a “bowl full of black cherries.” The exotic spiciness of the nose also follows through on the palate with hints of cardamom, cinnamon and brown sugar. There is a thread of acidity enlivening it all thanks to the high-altitude of Moncayo's range. Don’t wait for the score on this one.

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "Bodegas Alto Moncayo started in 2001 as a collaboration between importer Jorge Ordoñez, American importer Dan Phillips, Australian winemaker Chris Ringland and others. Located near the town of Borja, the 210 acres of vineyards are head-pruned, old Grenache vines planted at 3,000 feet above sea level in poorly nourished soils of slate, clay, chalk and quartzite. They make a number of cuvées, the most famous being the more expensive Alto Moncayo and the Aquilon. Their inexpensive offering is the 2012 Veraton, a 100% Grenache aged in 60% new French and 40% American oak for 17 months before being bottled without filtration. It is a powerful, full-throttle, pedal-to-the-metal red boasting a dense purple color, and a sweet blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, lavender, licorice and earth notes intermixed with a touch of new oak. Stylistically, this is a modern, massively intense, rich wine that over-delivers in many ways. However, it is not for consumers looking for shy, restrained and delicate wines. It should drink well for a decade."

vines planted nearly 100 years ago. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a flowery perfume revealing aromas of forest floor, underbrush, sweet black cherries, raspberries and strawberries. Medium-bodied, ethereal as well as sublime, this finesse-styled Grenache possesses a delicacy that is difficult to believe for such intensity. Consume it over the next 3-4 years."

Terra Alta is not a very well-known region-- it's tucked away in the south eastern corner of Catalonia, beneath Montsant and Priorat, in eastern Spain. It is one of the largest areas in Catalunya under vine. With plenty of old Garnatxa bush vines, it is amongst the best regions in terms of quality and authenticity. It is also one of the most mountainous (Terra Alta literally means 'highlands') and with low yields and old vines, the potential is clearly here and the proof is in the bottle.

We haven't done a wine of the month in January for a long, long time; but once we tasted this wine, we knew we had to share it. The nose is sweet and rich, with notes of dark fruits, plums and cassis (red and dark), midnight florals, sweet spice and black licorice. The palate continues with the sweet dark and red fruits, blackberry and currant, with touches of mineral earth, underbrush and evident forward acidity. Excellent wine-- phenomenal at this price.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 91-93 POINTS - "Ripe, full-throttle and serious efforts, these wines are made by Paul Wilkins of Alta Maria Vineyards. Showing lots of stem, pepper and earth, the 2010 Grenache Law of Return is much deeper and concentrated than the perfumed 2010 Grenache Dare. Ripe, voluptuous and brilliantly pure, with layers of black fruits, smoked meats, licorice and pan drippings, it hits the palate with a full-bodied, rich feel, solid mid-palate depth and a blockbuster finish. It’s a ripe, decadent effort geared for drinking over the coming 5-6 years. Drink 2014-2020."

The Barrel 27 guys have long searched for that perfect vineyard for the Rhône Valley’s bedrock grape... Grenache. That search has ended and the result is the most seductive Rock and a Hard Place to date! The wine exhibits a dark ruby-black color with a compelling nose of pureed raspberry, black berry jam, crushed mint leaf, sweet Tellicherry black pepper and cocoa, followed by hints of Chinese 5 Spices, cranberry, prosciutto, warm tar, lychee and rhubarb pie. In the mouth, the wine's purity shines out with flavors of dried raspberry and cranberry, mint, sage, cured meat and fresh herbs, with elements of wood smoke, nori, citrus and smoky paprika. Superb acidity balances the excellent tannin structure and the wine's generous body, yielding a long, pure finish of fruit and spice.

he fell in love with wine and decided to make his livelihood in the wine business. Hey…can you blame him?!? He has worked with many of the superstars of the Central Coast, including Matt Garretson, Augie Hug, and Alta Maria Vineyards. Today, he is the assistant winemaker at Barrel 27, and works alongside one of our best friends, McPrice Myers (what a mentor!), when Edgar isn’t tinkering on his own wines. We sampled his latest releases a few months ago, and they really knocked our socks off! The intensity of these wines are rivaled by few here in the United States, and we suggest you check out what Edgar can do!

“E-Squared” is a nickname given to Edgar and his sister Erika by their parents, and it's a blend of Erika’s favorite grape (Syrah) and Edgar's (Grenache). The E-Squared has become one of Edgar's most popular wines, and one he has made for several years in a row now.

As with the 2010 E-squared, this vintage is again sourced from Luna Matta Vineyard on the Westside Paso (Syrah) and Grenache from Cedar Lane Vineyard in Arroyo Seco. A little more savory but still packing some great ripe fruit with medium ruby color. The nose offers aromas of mulberry, fresh coffee grounds and cocoa powder, with secondary notes of red plum, red currant, and an earthy component. On the palate it comes off soft with fine tannins and a supple finish. This wine showcases better at cellar temperature and pairs well with gamey meats.

boasts a deep ruby color as well as loads of strawberry and black cherry fruit, hints of lavender and crushed rocks, sweet tannin, and a broad, savory mouthfeel. It, too, should be consumed over the next 3-4 years.

This has long been a popular source for value-priced wines. Founded in 1958 in the appellation of Campo de Borja, Borsao owns a whopping 3,706 acres of vineyards planted at elevations of 1,300 to 2,300 feet above sea level. The soils are primarily limestone-based and the area is highly reputed for old vine Grenache, but there is also Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah planted as well as a few white varietals. Bodegas Borsao’s flagship offering is Tres Picos. Made from 100% Grenache from yields of less than two tons of fruit per acre, these chalky vineyards are planted at a 2,000 foot plus altitude on the hillsides of the Moncayo Mountains. The harvest is all done by hand, and the wine is aged in a combination of stainless steel and French oak for ten months prior to bottling. If you have not yet discovered the great values of Bodegas Borsao, it’s about time you do."

to 3000 feet (the highest growing region for Garnacha grapes in Spain). The climate during the growing season is arid and blistering hot with cooling nights as a relief. The winter is very cold and never seems to end. Can grapes actually survive these conditions? Yes, but it’s probably not the best place for a vacation home! Those twisting and gnarly ancient head-pruned vines produce miniscule yields and incredible fruit concentration! This is only the 3rd release of the Breca; the 2010 was capped off with 94 Points from Robert Parker ‘s Wine Advocate, which stated, “Frankly, I was at a loss for words when I tasted it. It may be the most amazing wine I have ever tasted at this price point in over 3 decades…” Two vintages later, he may be saying the same for this newly released and spectacular 2012 Breca! But don’t wait for Bob, crank open this juicy treat! After all, as the review also suggested, “Consumers should fill their trunks with these beauties.” We could not agree more!

Tasting Notes - Dark ruby with purple highlights. Red and dark fruit aromas with floral, spice cake and mocha great the nose. On the palate, fleshy black raspberry and cherry compote flavors accompanied by loamy soil and pepper. This medium-bodied wine possesses supple tannins and closes with a long finish.

of this offering comes from the famed terroir in the northern Chateauneuf du Pape sector known as La Gardiole. Yields were 15-20 hectoliters per hectare, and the 2010 tips the scales at 15.5% natural alcohol. It displays a slightly darker ruby/plum/purple color than the traditional cuvee along with deep black currant and black cherry fruit intermixed with Christmas fruitcake, cedarwood, spice box and garrigue notes. A classic wine of Provence as well as Chateauneuf du Pape, with firm tannins in the finish, it is slightly less exotic and open-knit than its sibling, but it is very concentrated with impressive potential as well as longevity. It is good to see this cuvee return to form after a somewhat indifferent showing last year. This wine should drink well for 15 or more years."

The Cuvée Alexis Establet introduced in 1997 and named after one of the family’s ancestors is made 100% of the fruits of the 95 year-old Grenache vines. The wine ripens for 12 to 18 months in old and new barrels. It is produced only in the best harvesting years and needs an extraordinarily long aging period in the bottle.

Bold but balanced, strong yet refined, immense but contained. This is one that will be fun to watch evolve. It drinks beautifully now but has the potential to grow further with a bit of time. The nose is chockfull of sweet fruit, mostly ripe berries from raspberry to olallieberry, a bit of cherry, red plum. Elegant earthy spice and a touch of bacon and midnight florals seem to frame the rich depth of concentrated fruit. A touch of bramble as well. In the mouth, sweet fruit dominates but not in a totalitarian way-- the democracy allows for co-stars and is kept in check by excellent acidity and tannins. Ripe berries are in the spotlight with, again, cherry and red plum fruits, white pepper, a hint of anise, back bacon smoke and forest floor. The palate weight is full but lively, the sweet concentration of fruit lasts and lasts in a glorious finish that slowly exits the stage, exultant.

which are planted on the Westside of Paso Robles! Epoch's Paderewski Vineyard is a patchwork of different vineyard blocks matched to their specific soil and climate types. The 2012 Veracity Blend captures that patchwork in a bottle, with this year's blend being 55% Grenache, 27% Mourvèdre, and 18% Syrah.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "I was blown away by these 2011s from winemaker Jordan Fiorentini, and they showed uncommon depth and richness in the vintage. For the most part, they're ready to go, yet should evolve gracefully. Moving on to the reds and starting with the 2011s, these showed beautifully from barrel, and didn't disappoint from bottle. They're up there with the creme de la creme of the vintage. The 2012s are tighter, with a chewier, savory tannin profile that will be something to watch. They'll need a year or two in the cellar once released.

A blend of 55% Grenache, 27% Mourvedre and 18% Syrah, the 2012 Veracity is a sweetly fruited, sexy and seamless red that has plenty of black raspberry, raspberry, licorice, crushed rock and toasted spice on the nose. As with all of Jordan's 2012s, it's made in a full-bodied, lightly textured and savory style, with plenty of chewy tannin (which is common in her 2012s) on the finish. It will improve with another year in bottle and have over a decade of longevity."
