The Bodegas Alto Moncayo, along with its sister property El Nido in Jumilla, combines the talents of local growers and winemakers with Australia’s super-star winemaker, Chris Ringland. Read More...
The partnership has the ability to cherry-pick the best parcels of old vine Garnacha from Borsao’s extensive holdings in the region, nearly 2,000 acres. “Veraton” is a hedonistic wine. Look for a nose of incredible intensity showing Asian five spice powder, ginger, boysenberry, cedar and toasty oak. The palate fills out with luscious fruit that can only be described as a “bowl full of black cherries.” The exotic spiciness of the nose also follows through on the palate with hints of cardamom, cinnamon and brown sugar. There is a thread of acidity enlivening it all thanks to the high-altitude of Moncayo's range. Don’t wait for the score on this one.

that conveys the terrain and landscape. Its makers have understood how to preserve its decidedly fruit-forward character (essentially Garnacha with 25% Syrah), without masking it through ageing and it is an absolute gem of purity and balance; genuine, serious and elegant, but also youthful, fresh and easy to drink.

The 4 Monos red is an “alert” wine, lively, exhibiting a lovely ruby-cherry colour in the glass, of medium density and glyceric. It proffers aromas of fruit in its purest form, with woodland notes that are fresh and succulent without coming over as sweet, with a smoky and mineral (pencil lead) touch and some velvety notes, especially in the glass when still, which remind us of certain flowers, like violets. Its complexity is quite remarkable, and its nose is very elegant and honest.

On the palate it is intense, with a good, vibrant and juicy structure (the addition of Syrah surely has some bearing on the good deal of body it has, yet not in the least heavy): it is fresh, approachable and an easy drink; slightly smoky on the finish. An interesting, fine Garnacha from Madrid, recommendable, ideal to team up with meats, and roasts in particular, and just quite simply because: the company of those four nice monkeys might well be enough to brighten up an evening for us too.

vines planted nearly 100 years ago. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a flowery perfume revealing aromas of forest floor, underbrush, sweet black cherries, raspberries and strawberries. Medium-bodied, ethereal as well as sublime, this finesse-styled Grenache possesses a delicacy that is difficult to believe for such intensity. Consume it over the next 3-4 years."

Terra Alta is not a very well-known region-- it's tucked away in the south eastern corner of Catalonia, beneath Montsant and Priorat, in eastern Spain. It is one of the largest areas in Catalunya under vine. With plenty of old Garnatxa bush vines, it is amongst the best regions in terms of quality and authenticity. It is also one of the most mountainous (Terra Alta literally means 'highlands') and with low yields and old vines, the potential is clearly here and the proof is in the bottle.

We haven't done a wine of the month in January for a long, long time; but once we tasted this wine, we knew we had to share it. The nose is sweet and rich, with notes of dark fruits, plums and cassis (red and dark), midnight florals, sweet spice and black licorice. The palate continues with the sweet dark and red fruits, blackberry and currant, with touches of mineral earth, underbrush and evident forward acidity. Excellent wine-- phenomenal at this price.

extract aromatics and berry fruit flavors, while grapes from the higher elevations were sent directly to the fermenter for an extended fermentation to preserve the intensity of flavor in the old vine grapes. The wine was aged for 6 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels for additional roundness and texture. The wine tastes of ripe, juicy wild strawberry, red cherry and blackberry framed by supple tannins. Floral notes of violet and rose petal complement the oak notes of mocha and vanilla on the finish.

ROBERT PARKER 95 POINTS - “ I tasted these ten vintages [2002 – 2011] of Alto Moncayo in September, and I was blown away by how well they were showing. Read More...
I tend to drink Alto Moncayo during its first 5-6 years of life. Although I was sure they had aging potential, I did not realize just how much longevity these wines possess. Not one of these ten vintages was close to full maturity. For example, the 2002 is still a young wine. Most reveal a lot of licorice, lavender, kirsch liqueur, black currant and blackberry fruit. . . .The two most recent vintages, 2010 and 2011, were both late, cooler years and both have turned out to be sexy wines. I suspect that in many ways, 2011 will behave like 2006, being precocious and delicious, but not as long-lived as some of its siblings. These wines appear to have 20-30 years of aging potential, although the sweet spot for drinking them appears to be between age 8 and 15.”

One of the world’s great Grenache based wines is back in our store again with the new 2011! We’ve told the Moncayo story many times—old vine Garnacha with tiny yields growing in mountain-side quarries of iron-rich granite and limestone. In November, Robert Parker (Uncensored Live) wrote up his first vertical review of Alto Moncayo, 10 vintages from 2002 to 2011. Parker’s average score here was 95.6 points and the new 2011 is another classic, earning 95 points. Two vintages, 2007 & 2009, earned perfect 100 point scores from Parker.

The wines are, generally speaking, upfront and fruit-loaded, yet always offer solid complexity, good richness and overall very well-made profiles.

Made from declassified lots destined for McPrice’s Beautiful Earth and Altas Vinas (released under his McPrice Myers label), the 2010 Hand Over Fist is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre that comes from west side Paso Robles vineyards. Aged 20 months in French oak puncheons, it offers up a solid array of licorice, black fruits, earth and hints of leather to go with a medium to full-bodied, supple and beautifully balanced palate that carries juicy acidity and fine tannin. Another winner, it’s a rock- solid bottle of wine that will continue to drink nicely through 2018. Drink now-2018."

Superb acidity balances the excellent tannin structure and the wine's generous body, yielding a long, pure finish of fruit and spice.

ROBERT PARKER 94 POINTS - "The top cuvee, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Alexis Establet is 100% Grenache from nearly 100-year-old vines. Most Read More...
of this offering comes from the famed terroir in the northern Chateauneuf du Pape sector known as La Gardiole. Yields were 15-20 hectoliters per hectare, and the 2010 tips the scales at 15.5% natural alcohol. It displays a slightly darker ruby/plum/purple color than the traditional cuvee along with deep black currant and black cherry fruit intermixed with Christmas fruitcake, cedarwood, spice box and garrigue notes. A classic wine of Provence as well as Chateauneuf du Pape, with firm tannins in the finish, it is slightly less exotic and open-knit than its sibling, but it is very concentrated with impressive potential as well as longevity. It is good to see this cuvee return to form after a somewhat indifferent showing last year. This wine should drink well for 15 or more years."

The Cuvée Alexis Establet introduced in 1997 and named after one of the family’s ancestors is made 100% of the fruits of the 95 year-old Grenache vines. The wine ripens for 12 to 18 months in old and new barrels. It is produced only in the best harvesting years and needs an extraordinarily long aging period in the bottle.

Bold but balanced, strong yet refined, immense but contained. This is one that will be fun to watch evolve. It drinks beautifully now but has the potential to grow further with a bit of time. The nose is chockfull of sweet fruit, mostly ripe berries from raspberry to olallieberry, a bit of cherry, red plum. Elegant earthy spice and a touch of bacon and midnight florals seem to frame the rich depth of concentrated fruit. A touch of bramble as well. In the mouth, sweet fruit dominates but not in a totalitarian way-- the democracy allows for co-stars and is kept in check by excellent acidity and tannins. Ripe berries are in the spotlight with, again, cherry and red plum fruits, white pepper, a hint of anise, back bacon smoke and forest floor. The palate weight is full but lively, the sweet concentration of fruit lasts and lasts in a glorious finish that slowly exits the stage, exultant.

After years of studying wine abroad in Italy and working on becoming a Certified Sommelier, he realized that he wanted to make great wine, not just taste and recommend it to customers. The gods must have been smiling upon him because he got a job at one of the most sought-after wineries in Paso Robles...Booker! From picking the grapes to learning the creative techniques of blending and barrel selection and to the final step of bottling, Orion came to love the art of making wine. He soon became an assistant winemaker to Eric Jensen, the owner of the Booker Winery and Vineyard. In 2011 I decided it was time to take the plunge and make his own wine and started his own label, Dilecta, which means “lovely” or “loved” in Latin.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "Also beautiful, the 2011 The Tiller checks in as a blend of 64% Grenache (from the Russell Family Vineyard) and 36% Syrah (from the Caliza Vineyard). It should be even better in another year and drink nicely through 2019. Drink now-2019."
