Smokey terrior notes mix with cherry and forest floor in the nose. This “basic “ Pinot Noir was picked at a robust 95 Öchsle. On the palate there are notes of dried cranberry, pomegranate, Read More...
and cherry. This selection is very, very impressive for a basic Pinot Noir, and shows how far Pinot Noir production has come in Germany in the past decade. Delicious on its own, but also compliments heavier seafood, poultry and fine cuts of beef and game.

thickness and sweetness on the palate while managing – thanks to its sheer density and spine-tingling citricity? no, make that electricity! – to be not at all cloying, and indeed positively animated. Warm cinnamon stick, vanilla, jellied red fruits, dried concentration of apple and plum, a wealth of citrus ? there is such concentration, complexity, purity and sheer length one becomes light-headed thinking about the sacrilege of trying to do it justice in a wine journal."

Wine Spectator 96 Points: "Classic eiswein, exhibiting the sweet/tart profile and intense, concentrated flavors of apricot, preserved lemon, mineral and vanilla pastry. It's on the tart side now, but should settle down with time. Best from 2008 through 2035."

we knew we had to jump on it, because, as you should be aware, the 'Estate Riesling' from a top-notch producer is often one of the best value propositions Germany has to offer. This one offers bittersweet herbal, citrus zest, and berry flavors in a surprisingly creamy yet refreshing medium. Almost needless to say about this cuvee, the balance of sweetness is impeccable and the residual sugar barely noticeable. A great effort from the legendary Helmut Dönnhoff.

Paul Fürst has for many years been one of Germany's greatest practitioners of Pinot Noir and his Klingenberger is the quietest, the most understated and elegant in his stable.

The Furst Spätburgunder Klingenberger Pinot Noir has been cultivated on the hot red sandstone of Centgrafenberg and Schlossberg for centuries. Nestling between the woods of Spessart and Odenwald the river Main has formed a basin, creating an environment perfect for the Pinot vines. The mild climate promotes ripening of the grapes and the soil provides them with the structure the Fürsts' red wines are known for. Over the last few years there has been much investment in the quality of the vineyards. Natural cultivation, reduced yields, extensive canopy management, graduated picking of the grapes and careful vinification with long barrel aging time make sure the wines reach their full potential.

This is an unusually rich, flavorful, yet totally dry, Pinot Gris (Grigio) from the Franken region of Germany. On the nose you find aromas of green melon, spiced pears and white peaches. Read More...
In the mouth this wine delivers rich, viscous stone fruit flavors balanced with citrus notes and good acidity. The finish is long with excellent minerality. While this crisp white has some similarities to the Pinot Grigios found in Italy, it is easy to tell that it comes from Germany.
The stunning Schloss Hallburg (schloss = castle) in Franken dates to 1284. It is bordered on the north-west by the Main River and to the east by a canal. The surrounding towns of Hallburg, Nordheim, and Sommerach form a triangular region around it flanked by water, thus creating an "island" of quality wine-making in the heart of the region. The castle was acquired by the von Schonborn family in 1806. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically under the direction of Georg Hünnerkop, named Estate Manager of the Year in Germany by Gault -Millau in 2009. His style of winemaking features vigorous, refreshing whites without oak or "make-up." These are pure tasting wines from a great, ancient site in the bone-dry Franconian tradition.

in Germany’s Baden region, winemaker Claus Burmeister has created one of the most remarkable sparkling wines we’ve ever tasted from Germany. It is a beguiling 100% Pinot Meunier cuvée drawn entirely from the 2009 vintage. Burmeister ferments 30% of the wine in oak, 70% in steel, then uses some of the original unfermented juice to complete the secondary fermentation before aging the wine sur lattes for a remarkable 4 years. The result is a breathtaking example of what can be accomplished by a keen innovator who refuses to yield to compromise. Pale in color, the wine simply bursts with unmistakable fragrances of wild strawberries, yellow orchard fruits and baked bread, all the while supported by a very fine perlage and an impressive finish. We could hardly believe our ears when Burmeister told us that this wine is a Brut Nature (i.e. completely without dosage) because there is no sense of austerity: only thought- provoking pleasure. A worthy change of pace from the usual big name Champagnes.

understandably – especially with the unstoppable litany of high scores bestowed on them by the press – become one of Terry’s most sought-after German estates. This modest, entry-level wine has always been one of the best values in German wine, and consequently one of Terry’s most popular. Although a Qba wine (the level of quality wine just below Prädikatswein), this wine actually comes from a single vineyard in the Rheingau region called Rüdesheimer Drachenstein (Drachenstein means “Dragonstone”) and is 100% estate fruit! Terry tells us that it is “bright and salty; has some of the flint and kirsch of the site but also wisteria and mint, all in a suave context…potentially the best Dragonstone in many years.”
